Patented Mar. 17, 1925 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY HERBERT GOODENOUGI-I, OF DARTMOUTH, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA, ASSIG-NOR SCOTIA, CANADA, A CORPORATION.
sum
Application filed December 27, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY HERBERT Goon- ENOUGH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Dartmouth, in the Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in skates, and the objects of the invention are to improve the front and heel plates by which the skate blade is attached to the shoe and in particular to give additional strength to the said plates without increase in weight or thickness. Further objects of the invention are to provide front and heel plates of simple design which may be manufactured at low cost and may be readily applied to the skate and which will firmly and efiectively hold the blade in position on the shoe. It consists essentially of the flanged front and heel plates constructed as described in detail in the accompanying specification and drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of the skate having the present invention embodied therein.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view.
Figure 3 is a plan view.
Figure 4. is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4e4, Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a side view of the alternative form of the invention.
Figure 6 is an inverted plan of the alternative form of the invention.
Figure 7 is a plan view of the alternative form of the invention.
Figure 8 is a sectional view of the line 88, Figure 7 Figure 9 is a perspective view of one of the side members.
In the drawings, like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the drawings, and first to the form shown in Figures 1 to 4.
A indicates the blade of the skate, of any suitable design.
B the front plate designed to be attached to the sole of the boot of the wearer.
C the heel plate designed to be attached to the heel of the boot of the wearer, both the front and heel plates are formed with L shaped lugs 10 riveted to the plate and to the blade, by which the plate is attached to Serial No. 525,013.
the blade. The front plate B is formed with a central opening 11 and in accordance with the present invention reinforcing flanges 12 and 13 are provided, those flanges extending downwardly from the surface of the plate, the flange 12 extendin around the outer edge thereof and the flange 13 extending around the edge of the opening 11, the shape of the plate B itself being made to conform to the shape of the sole of an. ordinary boot.
The heel plate 0 is formed with a central of the two sections 20 and 21, the flanges extending around each of the sections.
It will be seen that the inner flanges 22 and the outer flanges 23 on the front sections are tapered off forwardly to cause them to gradually merge into the plate itself (as more particularly shown in Figure 9.)
In the heel plates, the side flange 24 may be reduced slightly in width toward the centre thereof.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit orv scope thereof, it is intended that. all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
' What I claim as my invention is:
In a skate of the character described, a
foot supporting plate formed of one piece and having a central opening, downwardly extending flanges on the underside of said plate, one of said flanges extending continuously around the outside edges of the plate and the other of said flanges extending con-' tinuously around the edges of the central opening.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
SIDNEY HERBERT GOODENOUGH. Witnesses:
MARIE DUDDY, E. W. GUSSONBIER, Jr.
