Description

Patented Mar. 10 1925.
UNITED gsrArlazs CHRISTENTHYGESEN, or MARLBoao, MASSACHUSETTS.
SKI.
Application led November 26, 1923. Serial No. 677,150.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, CHRIsTEN- THYGnsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at` Marlboro, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ski; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled "in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in ski and other forms ofsnow shoes, and has reference more particularly to means for at-v taching the ski or the like to the users foot.
It is the object of the invention to provide an exceptionally inexpensive, yet an efficient and desirable attaching means, embodying a U-shaped yoke which embraces the users foot, is held in engagement with his heel, and passes through guides ona transverse strap through which the toe of the users 'shoe is inserted, the arms of the yoke being secured to the ski or the like, and having no fixed points of flexure, so that they may yield in any direction in which the users foot yields and will consequently permit ,free unhampered movement of the foot.
`"With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed7 the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure l is a side elevation showing a ski embodying my invention.
p Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view of the attaching means. f i
Figure 3 is a longitudinal'sectional view as indicated by line 3-3 of Fig. v2.
Figures 4 and 5 are vertical transverse sectional views on lines 4-4 and 5 5 of Fig. 3. In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral l designates a ski of common formation, said 'ski having a slot 2 formed transversely therethrough, from edge to edge. A continuous toe. strap 3 passes through this slot and is provided with a pair of guides 4 over the edges of the ski l. A substantially U-shaped, foot-embracing yoke 5 is provided, the arms 6 of said yoke being passed through the guides 4, and being secured at their front ends to the ski 1, by a suitable clamp or the like 7. The rear end of this yoke 5 is adapted to be held in contact with the users heel, for which purmay be used, being preferably covered'with' pose, an instep strap 8 is shown, connected with the arms 6.
In order that the yoke 5 may be adjusted for use by people wearing shoes of different sizes, the yoke arms 6 may be adjusted through the guides 4, in the present disclosure, when the clamp 7 is loosened, and said arms may again be tightly held by tightening said clam'p.
Attention is directed to the fact that the arms 6 have no fixed points of fiexure, butY are of resilient nature throughoutv their lengths so that they may freely spring witlr the movements of the users foot, in numerous directions, permitting unhampered foot movement.- Y
In the preferred formof construction, thev yoke 5 consists of a single length ofrattan or other desired material, as indicated at 9, this length of rattan or other rod which leather as indicated at 10. f
It will `be seen 4from thev foregoing that, the invention is simple andinexpensive, yet j that it is very effective and exceptionally desirable.
'Asl excellent results arelobtainable'from the details disclosed," they are preferably followed, but within the scope ofthe invention as claimed, numerous minor changes l maybe made.
I claim: Y f A snow shoe comprising a body Ahaving a transverse slot between its top and bottom, a transverse continuous toe strap passing through said slot and having a fixed in variable circumferential dimension, said toe-y strap having guide loops. over the edgesr of the aforesaidvbody, a one-piece U-shaped foot-embracing resilient rod having its arms f passed slidably through said guide loops, said arms having no fixed points of flexure but being resilient throughout their lengths vfor yielding in numerous directions with the users foot, a transverse clamp securing the front ends ofsaid arms adjustably and nonpivotally to said body infront of said toe strap, and aninstep strap connected with said yoke arms but not with said body, said instep strap being adapted foil connecting the arms of the rod withthe users foot to yield vertically with'the rear portion of the latter. p Y' In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed by signature. r
' CHRISTEN THYGESEN.
