COMBINED BABBITTING AND FINISHING JIG'.
Application filed November 6, 1923. Serial No. 673,169.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Vmen. L. DU BoIs and CLARENCE E. CLIFTON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Tulsa, county of Tulsa, and State of Oklahoma, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Babbitting and Finishing Jigs, of which the following is a full and complete specification, reference being had therein to the appended drawings.
This invention relates to the babbitting and finishing of the bearings for crank shaft journals as found in gas engines,'pumps, compressors and the like. In devices of this character it is essential that the bearings be relined with Babbitt metal from time to time. It is also necessary that the new bearings be finished by boring. As these bearings are generally at least three in number, great care must be exercised to insure the proper alignment of the same.
It is an object of this invention to develop a device capable of use in both the babbitt casting step and the subsequent step of boring out the cast bearings.
It is also an object of this invention to simplify the device required to carry out the above two steps and to insure the uni formity and accuracy of the work done.
Other advantages resulting from our invention will be apparent from the following description of one form, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the jig used in the babbitting step;

Fig. 4 is a side view of the locking nuts.
As illustrating one preferred form of our invention there has been shown in the drawings a frame or spider 5, conforming in general to the shape of the cylinder block 6 or an analogous casting of the crank case of a gas engine, pump, compressor or the like. This frame 5 is provided with a series of pins 7 passing through the sides of the frame 5 and projecting into the customary bolt holes found in the walls of the member 6. By means of the pins 7, the jig may be clamped readily to the machine part which it is desired to supply with new bearings.

The member 6 is shown to have an intermediate transverse partition 10 and end walls 11 andi12. .The partition and end walls each carry journal boxes 13.-- 1

and passing through the journal boxes 13 I is a bar 14, which serves the purpose of forming cores during the babbitting'step and as a boring bar during the finishing step. Throughout the greater part of its length, the boring bar 14 hasa uniform cylindricalsurface as shown at 15,16 and 17. These" uniform cylindrical portions are so disposed as to occupy the journal boxes 13 when the bar is at its limiting position shown v inv Fig. 1. V I
Suitably spaced along the bar 14: and between the'portions 15, 16 and 17 arerecessed portions 18 and 19Q-A recessed portion 20 is adjacent the portion 17. The recessed portions 18, 19 and 20 are so spaced as to be brought opposite the journal boxes 13 simultaneously. i

The boring tool lvtis'provided at oneend with a handle 22 by which the boring bar' may be rotatedin the bearings 9. A screwthread 23 is formed on the boring bar 1 1 as shown in the dra'wings,and constitutes the means for advancing the boring bar with respect to the work.
The jig 5 has at one end. converging arms 24, 24 carrying at their ends internally screw-threaded blocks 25, 25, by means of pivot pins 26, 26. The blocks 25, 25 are of such shape as to completely surround screw-thread 23 and are conical' as shown. The outer cylindrical surface of the blocks 25, 25 is screw-threaded to receive the lockiug nut 27.
