W. W. CROCKER FOOT REST Filed June 4, 1923 Patented F eb, 24, 1925.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM WESLEY GROCKER, F SALINA, KANSAS.
FOOT
Application filed June 4,
'10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM WESLEY CRooKEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salina, in the county of Saline b and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Foot Rest, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to foot rests especially designed for use in combination with reclining chairs or the like, the primary object of the invention being to provide a foot rest which may be adjustable to support the feet of the user at various heights to the comfort of the user.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide means whereby adjustments may be made by the. feet of the user, eliminating the necessity of rising from the chair to accomplish the adjustment.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily disassembled to provide a small and comp-act article to facilitate storing or transportation of the same.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de- 30 scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a foot rest constructed in accordance with the invention, a portion thereof being broken away.
Figure 2 is a fragmental sectional view through the support and one of the adjustable rests.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of one of the foot rests disclosing the support grip- 45 ping end of the rest.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the base of the rest which is formed with a tapered opening 6 and a plurality of supporting 50 legs 7.
The reference character 8 designates the upper section of the rest and is in the form of a length of metal provided with ribs 9 formed integral with the upper section,
REST.
1923. Serial No. 643,352.
- the ribs being disposed on opposite edges of the upper section as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing.
Formed'atthe lower end of the upper section 8 is an elongated opening 10 of a construction to accommodate the foot of the user, whereupn the users foot may be placed in the opening to hold the rest while an adjustment of the foot receiving sections is being made.
Formed integralwith the lower section is a tapered extension 11 designed to be fitted in the tapered opening 6 to set up a wedging action between the extension and tapered opening to insure against movement of the upper section with respect to the base of the rest. In order that the upper section may be secured to the lower section, a securing screw 12 is provided, that ex tends through a suitable opening in the base and has its threaded portion embedded .in a threaded opening of the extension 6.
The foot rests or foot receiving members are indicated by the reference character 13 the same being disposed on opposite side edges of the upper section 8 and as shown, each of these members 13 includes a curved arm having a head 14 formed at one end thereof, the head being in the form of a socket provided with curved walls 15 to embrace portions of the ribs 9 to secure the members 13 to the upper section 8. Below the head of each member 13 are the arms 16 that contact with the ribs to restrict lateral movement of the members 13 and insure a true vertical adjustment thereof.
Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, when pressure is brought to bear on the members 13, the members 13 are rocked slightly, setting up a binding action between the heads and upper section 8 of the support, causing the heads to grip the upper section 8 and be retained in their adjusted positions.
Enlargements 17 are formed at the free ends of the members 13 and provide means to prevent a persons foot from slipping from the member 13. In order that the downward movement of the members 13 will be limited, a transverse rib 18 is provided, the rib being disposed in suitable spaced relation with the base 5, so that a clearance will be provided between the members 13 and the base to allow the operators foot to be placed under the member 13 to raise the same and properly adjust it for the convenience of the user.
The upper ends of the ribs 9 terminate at points in spaced relation with the upper end of the upper section 8, providing a space to permit the members 13 to be removed from the upper section 8 in the event that it is desirable to remove the members 18 and disassemble the rest.
Formed at the upper end of the upper section 8 is an eye 19 by means of which the rest may be conveniently moved from place to place.
1111 the use of the device, it is obvious that an operator may by placing one "foot in the opening 10 secure the rest against movement while with his other foot, he may by placing his foot under one of the mem- -bers13 tilt the member 13 to relieve the binding action between the member 13 and the upper section 8 and allow the member to be moved or adjusted longitudinally of the section 8.
I claim In a foot rest, a base, an upper section removably secured to the base, said upper section including an elongated member provided with lateral-vertical ribs, said upper section having an elongated opening formed atthe lower end thereof to accommodate the foot of the user to hold the foot rest against movement, foot receiving members having heads, said heads cooperating with the ribs to hold the foot receiving members'in various Positions of adjustment, and means for securing the upper section to the base.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing;
as my own, I have hereto-affixed my signature in the presence of two -w1tnesses.'
