Description

' To all whom it may concern? -latented Feb. 24,1925.
1 UNITED STATES c. am, or semi rmurcrsco, cmromzn.
, vvrrrsa'rntnarzaoor men Anflication fflled August 5, 1924. semi m. 730,250.
Be itknown thatl, Fmmo'lc. Zen, a. citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county ofSan Francisco; and State of Californiagvhave invented a l e-wand useful Improvement in .a Weatherpr'pof Hinge, of which the follo'wing'is a speeificat1on. My invention relates to improvements n J hinges for hingedly mountings windows,
doors and the like within-easements, and particularly toy-an im roved hinge which will maintain a west er-proof eonnection between the window; or-dooriand the casement in all positions ofthe window or door. gThe primary, object of my invention is. to
. provide unimproved hinge adapted to form a weather-proof mounting for doors, wm
dows, and the like.-
' Another object is to pro vide an improved hinge which will form a strongi an rigid mounting; l Afurt er objectis to provide an improved sash fromthe casement.
' specificiition 'and drawings and m' hinge which "may be easily installed in con .nection with veasements and sashes, and which will also facilitate the removal of the o I accomplish these and other objects by ,-'means' of the device disclosed in the draw- 5 ings forming apart-of the present specifies,
stion whrein like-characters of reference are used to designate similar parts -through which, Y 4 v Fig. 1 is a vertical'section through a window and. casement showing the manner in which my" improved hinge" is used for mounting window sashes} 4 Fig. 2'; an enlarged sectional detail of m 'improved'hinge;
ig. 3 is a similar view showing the hinge with the window in'the open position.
Fig. 4' is a broken front elevation of the I means of round head 3 extending entirely across the casement and having a groove .4 lonfludinally disposed therein, said grove the bead by means of screws 7 "or other suit able securing means. 4 The strip 6 adapted the pur ose of which will hereinafter be substantially U-shaped in cross section and 'thro'ugh'the-sash l and engaging registers nection with the bead,.the member 13 moved ing adapted to receive one edge. of al -strip 6 secured in connection with.
" to be secured in connection with one edge ofthe casement by means of screws 8 appliedthrough apertures 9 formed in the strip, A moulding 11 is secured between the strip 6 and the edge of the casement 2, said moulding being provided with an arcuate surface slightly spared from the adjacent surface of the head 3 to form a recess 12,
more in ly explained. Y
I5 A bead engaging. member designatedin general by the numeral 13 is secured in connection with the edge of the sash 1 and adapted to pivotally engage the bead .--3. Themember 13 is formed from sheet met shaped to form a socket portion 14; adapted to form a neat turning fit upon the head 3,
said socket portion being open upon one side to accommodate the strip 6 and to per mit a movement of the member '13 through 75 approximately 90 relative to. said strip.
The member .13 is secured to the sash 1 by means of an' extension 16 formed by bending the. sheet metal outwardly from the socket portion to forma lateral extension extending the entire length of the member 13, said extension being fitted into a groove 1'? formed in the adjacent edge of the sash 1. A filler 18 is fitted between the wall porrigidityto the mounting. The extension is held in the groove 17 by means ofscrews19 or other suitable securing elements a'pplied ing apertures 21 formed in the wall .portions of the extension 16 and the filler fitted therebetween.
=,In the drawings I have illustrated the hinge in connection with a window'sash, and in Fig. 1, I have illustrated awindow construction wherein upper and lower sashes are mounted in a common casement. In operation, the strip 6 is firstsecured in con- 1'00 longitudinally onto the bead, and the strip 6 secured upon the edge of the caseme'ntfi or upon a cross member 23, themouldin a 11 beingsecured between the strip 6 an the easement by the same screws used for securing the strip. The extension 16 of the member 13 is then secured to the sash by inserting said extension into the groove 17 and applying the screws 19. The open side ofthe socket portion 14 is so disposed that as tions of the extension-to afford strength and portion of-Fig, 1 of the drawings, one edge the head 3, the oppositeedge of the socket portion being degrees away from the strip 6. When now spacedsubstantially ninety.
the window iscpened as shown in Fig.5:
and in the lower portion'of Fig. 1, the
mentioned edge'will be paitiallywithdrawn vent further movement.-
' the hingeveifectivel The hm fronf'the recess and the opposite edge' will be moved tojabut-againstthewstrip 6 to preh .The 'niouldingll is made to 'extendislightly" above the center -.of the bead 3 sdthatwhen the window is fully .open ed the edge. dithegmoulding will overlapthe adjacent edge offthemember '13.
The socket portion. of. the'member 13 is made to fitneatlyonto thebead 3wandby causing the edge ofjjthe socket portion to extend into the 12fand=atall times closes the space be-.
' tween the sash and 't fecasem'ent and in't-his manner forms a weather-proof mounting.-
e is. particularly useful in c'onn'e'c-- .windows' which are arranged; to openinwardly from the top, my improved tion wit device efiectivel excluding air, dust a nd -moisture at the not restricted to this particular ap lication of the'device as it is equally 'u'sefu in con-' nection with doors and in other connecs tions wherein it is' desired to maintain a;
weather-proof mounting. In: connection with the used my im roved hinge for f ove' described,' it.
mounting -windows as a will be noted that the hin e permitsthe window to be swung-inwardly to substantially horizontalposition whereby the outer surface of the window-may be conveniently washed, any excess water past thehinge and into the room.
The hinge may be readily taken apart round bead mountedalongone edge of a.
casement; and a. bead engaging member mounted upon the c respo ding edge of a saslfmounted withinhe case ent, said memher having a longitu'dinally disposed socket gaging the -mou nted in association with ottom of the window and. preventing rain or water falling upon the window from draining past the hinge .and. into the room. However, myinvention is used being drained ofl' outwardly and prevented from seeping b the bead alon' engaged Within a .means extending the filler for rigidly securing the bead en- 00 engaging the bead, along the entire' length thereof and forming a pivotal connection therewith.
2. A weather-proof hinge comprising a, I round bead'mounted along one edge of ca flo' casement; a bead engaging member mounted upon the corresponding{edge of a sash mounted within the easement, said member having a longitudinally disposed-socket enthereof and formin'gi'ga'pivotal o' neeuonf therewith; and a moulding mounted 319, sociation with the-beafi and having-"an 'a'rcuate surface spaced- 6m one side ofi-fthe bead to form a .re'cessadapted to"recei'v.ei'.'the e0:
