Description
Patented Feb. 17, 1925.
MIKE4C- ROBBINS, F HABARISONVILLE, MISSOURI.
END GATE.
Application filed May 13,
T0 allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MIKE C. RoeniNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-larrisonville, in the county of Cass and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful End Gate, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to endgates for wagons and aims to provide novel means whereby a swinging endgate may be positioned on the usual wagon body to facilitate the handling of material being loaded or unloaded.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an endgate of this charac ter which may be adjusted in various positions and held in such positions of adjustment, thereby adapting the device for various usages.
0 A still further object of the invention is the provision of means for locking the endgate in its closed position, the means being such as will prevent the spreading of the Sideboards of the wagon body.
- With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description roceeds, the invention resides in the com- )ination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the inven tion.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmental side elevational view of a wagon body equipped with an endgate constructed in accordance with the invention, dotted lines being used to indicate various adjusted positions of the endgate.
Figure 2 is a fragmental end elevational view of the wagon body.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4c is a fragmental sectional view through one corner of the wagon body and endgate.
Figure 5 is a fragmental perspective View disclosing the endgate and portion of the body of the wagon.
Figure 6 is a fragmental perspective disclosing one corner of the endgate.
1924. Serial No. 713,021.
Figure 7lis a sectional viewtaken on line 7+7 of Figure 6.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates a sideboard of a wagon body which is provided with the usual vertical grooves 6 in whichthe usual endgate is held in its, active position.
The device forming the essence of "the present invention includes a bracket mem-- her which is in the form of a rod bent upon itself as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing to provide opposed leg members 6 and 7, the leg members 7 being provided with an offset portion 8 to which the locking bolt 9 is connected, the locking bolt being provided with threads to receive the arm 10 that is adapted to engage the endgate and hold it in its vertical position.
The leg member 6 is adapted to move in the groove 6 to hold the bracket member in position, there being provided a strap 11 secured to the side board of the wagon body to cooperate with the leg members -7 and hold the leg members 7 against movement.
In order that the leg members 6 and 7 will be held in proper spaced relation with each other, spacing members 12 are provided which grip portions of the leg members 6 and 7 at a point adjacent to the upper ends thereof. The endgate is relatively long and is of a width to move between the side-boards of a wagon body and as shown is provided with side members 13 that guard the side edges of the endgate to prevent material scooped onto the endgate from falling laterally therefrom.
Bolts 14 extend through the side members 13 of the endgate and support rollers 15 which rollers also move in the grooves 6 to hold the inner end of the endgate in position, the roller acting to allow free movement of the inner end of the endgate when an adjustment is being made.
The reference character 16 indicates chains which are secured to the bracket members at 17, the opposite ends thereof being secured to the endgate at points to support the endgate in various positions of adjustment. I
i From the foregoing it will be obvious that due to this construction, the endgate may be moved to various angles with respect to the body of the wagon thereby adapting the endgate for various purposes such as a shoveling board or the like to facilitate the loading and unloading of the wagon or moved to provide a runway so that animals such as hogs, sheep or the like may be readily loaded into the wagon body.
In order that the arms 10 will be restricted against lateral movement, when in their holding positions, a wear plate indicated at 18 is provided, which wear plate is formed with a notched portion 19 and an opening at the inner end of the notched portion, there being provided an outstanding circular rib 20 surrounding the opening and within which the head 21 of the arm is positioned to engage the head when the arm has been screwed down to its locked position.
I claim In an end gate construction, a wagon body having vertical grooves disposed adjacent to the rear end thereof, an endgate adapted to move to a position between the grooves, said endgate having wear plates extending beyond the side edges thereof, the wear plates having notches formed therein, bracket members including spaced leg members, one of said leg members adapted to move into one of said grooves associated therewith, each of said bracket members having an offset portion, a locking bolt carried by each bracket member and secured thereto adjacent to the offset portion thereof, said locking bolts adapted to swing to positions within the notches of the wear plates to lock the endgate in a vertical position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
his MIKE O. X ROBBINS.
