CARDING BRUSH.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN D. GOLD- BERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carding Brushes, of which thefollowing is a specification.

My invention relates to a hand carding device for brushing or stripping wool, cloth, furs, hair, or other fibrous materials by means of closely assembled teeth or points of wireor other material set in a suitable support.

The invention relates more particularly to a device of this general character wherein a handle is provided for operating the device, said handle being secured to the mounting which carries the brush.

The invention consists in the combinations of parts and the details of construction as hereinafter more particularly stated and claimed whereby the general objects of the invention are secured.

A leather, rubber or other foundation, usually of flexible material, in which the teeth or points of the card are set is indicated at 1. At 2 is shown a backing plate of sheet metal to which the foundation is secured by means of the tongues or points 3 which are struck up and integral with the metal of the plate and are adapted to be entered through slots in the foundation and to be turned down upon the same as shown in Fig. 3 to secure the foundation and its backing late together. Instead of using teeth or points as shown in Fig. 2 the foundation may be secured to the backing plate by turning over a flanged edge of said backing plate on to the upper surface ofthe foundation and as shown in Fig. 8.

Along one edge of the plate 2' a flange i having an overhang 5 may be provided, said flange and overhang being integral with the body of the plate. The overhang 5 laps .over the edge of the foundation'and assists in'holding the same down upon the platebackin 2. The lugs 7 look over the lower side of the base as will be presently described and aid in securing the base and backing firmly together. The ear 6 is formed with an eye or opening through which the threaded stud or projection 8 carried by and projecting from the edge of the base may project when the backing carrying the assemblage of teeth or points is slid into place onthe base edge-- wise as will be presently described.

The handle 9 has a socket 10 in its end threaded for co-operation with the threaded stud 8. The base carrying said-stud is indicated at 11. The latter may consist of aplate or frame having overhangingedges or flanges 12 on its sides; These overhanging edges 12 serve to hold the plate or backing 2 down upon the base 11 when said plate is slid under the side edge then operating as guides, and into position where its entering end will be locked under the rear flanged side 12. IVhen the base is slid home into such position the lugs 7 will lock under the-base and assist in holding the plate and base firmly together. hen the handle is screwed home upon the stud 8 its end will engage the face of the lug6- and thus prevent withdrawal of the backingcarrying the assemblageof teeth or points from the base. In caseit is desired to renewthe points orv teeth the handle 9 is removed so that the plate or backing 2 carryingthe assemblage of points maybe slid out from'position where it edges lie underthe overhang 12, the eye 6 being at such time free to move'over the threaded stud or pin 8 until itis freed from the same and until'the side edges of the backing 11 are fully disengaged-from the overhang 12.

Additional means for firmly anchoring the handle after it is screwed home upon the stud Smay be providedby the lugs 13 which project from the edge of the base 11 into position to embrace the sides-of the end of the handle 9.

That I claim as my invention is 1. In a'device of the character described, the combination of a foundation having the points-set in it, a metal'backing plate to which the foundation is secured, a base and a handle attachable and detachabletherefromnan'dengaging and locking the backing plate against movement on the base when the handle is in attached position.

2. In a'device of the character described, the combination of a foundation in which the-points arerset,a backing plate to the face of which said foundation is secured,

-an ear projecting from one edge of'said plate, a base havinga threaded stud orstem and a handle threaded for co-operation' with said stud and adapted to engage the car when screwed home.-

In a device of the character described, thecOm-bina tionof a base, a backing for the points attachable and detachable from said base, a threaded lug or stem projecting from one edge of the base, a handle attachable and detachable from the base, and a lug projecting from the base and engaging the side of the handle when screwed home as and for the purpose described.

5. In'a carding device, the combination with a foundation sheet in which the points are setanda backin'gplate having tongues or points struck up out ofthe-metal of the plate and adapted'to enter through slots in the foundation and to -be' locked down upon thesame, ears or lugs also struck up from the metal of the plate near one edge thereof anda base withwhich the latter lugs interengage to hold-the backing plate down upon the same.

6. In a device of the character described, the combination of a foundation having points'set therein, a backing plate or sup port to which the foundation is secured, a base having means forattachment of the backing plate and'a handle-attachable and detachable from the baseand adapted to lock the plate in position on the base 'when the handle is in attached position.

7. In a device of the characterdescribed, the combination with a foundation having teeth or points set in" it of a backing plate and fastening means integral with'said plate for securing the foundation and plate together.

8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a foundation having teeth or points set. in it ofa backing plate and fastening means integral with said plate for securingthe' foundation and plate together, said platebeingalsoproi'ided with lugs for securing the plate to a mounting.
