R. A. LOCK PLOWBEAM CLAMP Filed March 18, 1924 Patented Feb. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES ROBERT A. LOOK, OF BOYDELL, ARKANSAS.
PLOWBEAM CLAMP.
Application filed March 18, 1924. Serial No. 700,188.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. Loan, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boydell, in the county of Ashley and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plowbeam Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a clamp for attaching a standard carrying a cutting colter, to a plow beam. I
An important object of the invention is to provide a clamp of the above mentioned character, which is adapted to be freely adjusted longitudinally of the plow beam, and when clamped in adjustment at the selected position will hold the standard carrylng the colter, rigid to the plow beam, 1n a secure and powerful manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clamp of the above mentioned character, so constructed thatthe colter carrying the standard may be lnchned transversely with respect tothe plow beam, so that the colter will be in alinement with the point of the plow share.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate l1ke parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of apparatus embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the clamp embodying my invention,
Figure 3 is a plan view-of the same,
Figure 4 is a transverse section,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the clamp.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a plow beam having the usual handles 11 at the rear end thereof, and carrying the plow share 12.
The numeral 13 designates a colter or colter disc, rotatably mounted upon a standard 14, as shown.
The numeral 15 designates a clamp as a whole, embodying a fiat metal plate 16. This metal plate is provided at its forward end and at its top with a longitudinally extending ear or lug 17, to engage upon the top of the plow beam 10, and at its rear end, and at the bottom thereof with a corresponding longitudinally extending ear or lug 18, to engage beneath the plow beam 10. The ears or lugs 17 are preferably cast integral with the plate 26. This plate 26 is also provided with upper and lower ears or lugs 19 and 20, preferably cast integral with the plate at its upper and lower edges, and projecting laterally in an opposite direction from the lugs 17 and 18. The standard 14 is arranged between the lugs 19 and 20, and contacts with a vertically inclined web 21, preferably formed integral with the plate 26, between the lugs 19 and 20. The web 21 is in the form of a wedge, tapering downwardly, and its purpose is to dispose the standard 14 at a transverse inclination with respect to the plow beam, whereby the colter 13 may be positioned in alinement with thepoint of the plow share.
The numeral 22 designates a U-shaped bolt, which is adapted to embrace the plow beam, clamp, and standard 14. This U-bolt passes. through apertures in a strap 23, and; carries nuts 24.
In view of the foregoing description, it is obvious that the clamp '15 may be readily longitudinally adjusted upon the plow beam 10, to vary the distance between the colter 13 and the plow share 12. When the nuts 24 are screwed up, the several parts are rigidly clamped tothe plow beam in a powerful manner.
The action of the earth upon the colter tends to force it rearwardly, and the lugs 19 and 20 positively prevent swinging rearward movement of the standard 14 with respect to the clamp 15, while the lugs 17 and 18 positively prevent swinging movrnent of the clamp with respect to the standard.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, :and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A clamp for connecting a standard with a plow beam, said clamp comprising a plate provided between its ends and upon its outer face with a tapered transverse web decreasing in width downwardly, outwardly extending lugs carried by the plate and arranged adjacent to the upper and lower ends of the Web upon opposite sides thereof, the web being adapted to receive thereon the standard arranged between said lugs, in- Wardly extending ears formed upon the plate at its top and bottom to engage above and below the standard, a U-bolt having spaced arms for clamping the standard to the Web and the plate to the beam, the arms of the U-bolt being arranged above and below the plow beam at points opposite to and remote from the outwardly extending ears, and a plate engaging one side of the beam and attached to the ends of said arms.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ROBERT A. LOOK.
