Description
Feb. 10, 1925. 1,525,661
. v. SAWYER LEVER ATTAGHMEEXT Filed April 4, 1923 v I I Vernon Gawyer Patented Feb. 10, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
VERNON SAVVYER, OF BENTON HARBOR, MICHIGAN.
LEVER ATTACHMENT.
Application filed April l, 1923. Serial No. 629,788.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. VERNON SAWYER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Benton Harbor, county of Berrien, tate of li lichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lever Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lever attachments.
In automobiles as ordinarily constructed the brake and clutch foot levers are arranged through holes in the tootboard. These holes are of necessity of considerably greater dimensions than the dimensions of the lever in order to permit the movement of the lever, with a result that an opening is left which permits the entrance of cold air in winter, the entrance of hot air when the engine becomes heated and also odors from the heated engine.
It is the main object of this invention to provide an attachment for such levers which effectively closes the openings to prevent the passage of air therethrough and also serves to prevent rattling of the lever.
A. further object is to provide an improved attachment for levers of the character described which may be readily applied to levers as installed in the machine and adjusted to the lever.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a side elevation of an automobile foot lever and connections, a portion of the vehicle body being shown in vertical section to show the relation of parts and the connecting rod to the lever being broken away.
Fig. II is an inverted view of my improved lever attachment.
Fig. III is a vertical section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. II looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. IV is a perspective view of the pad of my improved closure plates.
Similar reference numerals indicate similar parts throughoutthe several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the foot board of an automobile, having an opening 2 therein through which the arm 3 of the foot lever i is disposed, the lever being pivoted at 5 and provided with a return spring 6. 7 indicates the rod connect ing the lever to the part to be operated thereby.
I provide a closure plate 8 having a slot 9 therein opening at one edge of the plate so that the plate may be slipped upon the lever as indicated. The lever is provided with downwardly projecting lugs 10 and 11 disposed on opposite sides of the slot, the lug 11 carrying set screws 12 by means of which the closure plate is adjustably secured to the lever.
The plate is provided with a pad 13 of felt or like material which, when the lever is in its normal position, lies; against the under side of the foot board, closing the opening 2 therein. This pad is preferably provided with overlapping tongues 14 which close the slot as shown in Fig. II. The pad is removably secured by the split staples 15 which are arranged through the pad and through holes 16 in the plate, the staples being clamped upon the rear side of the plate as illustrated, thus providing means which permits the removal of the pad as occasion requires.
With the parts thus arranged my improvements not only serve the purpose of effectively closing the opening but also prevent rattling.
I have shown various parts in conventional form and have shown only one embodiment or adaptation as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embpdy or adapt the same as may be desire Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a foot board having a hole therein adapted to receive a lever, a foot lever provided with an arm disposed through said hole, a closure plate having a slot opening at one side thereof adapted to receive the lever, said plate having downwardly projecting lugs at the edges of the slot, clamping screws carried by one of said ahole' therein adapted to receive a lever,
a foot lever disposed through said hole, a
closure plate having a slot opening at one side thereof adapted to receive the lever mounted thereon, and a pad mounted upon said plate to engage the under side of said foot board and close said hole therein when the lever is in normal position, said pad having overlapping tongue like projections extending across said slot in said plate.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set 20 my hand and seal.
