JOSEPH BECKER, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR- TO THE KOPPERS COM- IANY, OF PITTSBURGH. PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
COKE-OVEN DOOR AND OPERATING MEANS THEREFOR.
Application filed October 16, 1919. Serial No. 330,989.
To 77 01102 2 2'2 may (GNP/3H2.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BECKER, a citizen of the United States. residing in Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coke-Oven Doors and Operating Means Therefor, of which the following is a' specification.
This invention relates to coke ovens and has for its essential object the provision of a vertically-slidable hinged oven door for opening and closing the mouth of a coking chamber of said oven, and a removable manually-operable door-lifting and operating means that may be moved into operative relation with any of the oven doors of a coke-oven battery and then operated to open the door. The manually-operable door-lifting and operating means of the presentinvention is exceedingly simple and economical in construction and is adapted to replace expensive, heavy and complicated door oper-, ating machinerynow in use. The invention is of particular utility in coke oven plants or batteries of relatively restricted size and capacity, although it may obviously be employed in coke oven units of whatever magnitude with satisfactory results.
The invention also includes among its objects an increasing of the efliciency of oper ation of an apparatus of the character set forth combined with great simplicity in design and construction and such other results or advantages in construction and operation as are found to obtain in the structures hereinafter described or claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and showing, for purposes of exemplification, a preferred form and manner, in which the invention may be embodied and practiced, but without limiting the claimed invention specifically to said illustrative instance or instances;
Figure 1' is a fragmentary side elevation of a coke oven battery equipped with an oven door and a door operating means'constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation taken in a plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; I
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional elevation taken in a of Fig. 4;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged front elevation of the lower portion of an oven door and showing plane indicated by the line 33 the operating means'in position for operating the door;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken in a plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 1; ig. 6 is a horizontal section'taken in a plane indicated by the line 6-6 of Fig. 4: and
Fig. 7 door.
The same characters of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several views. In its present embodiment. the'invention is a perspective of a coke oven cesses 23 having shoulders 24 to constitute jambs respectively positioned on the opposite sicles of and atthe end of a coking chamber 21. The top of the coking chamber 21 is recessed as shown at 25. said recess extending inwardly from the outer face of the side of the battery and including a shoulder 26 disposed approximately in the same plane as the shoulders 24 of the jamb-s and connecting them together. The end faces of the heating walls are each braced by a pair of vertical parallel buck stays 27 which extend from the top of the battery downwardly beyond thebottoms 28 of the several coking chambers and brace the battery structure therebeneath, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Extending. lengthwise-along the side of the battery in a plane beneath the operated door is a horizontal platform 29, the outer edge of whichis supported by a series of vertical uprights 30. This platform supports a pair of rails 31 constituting a track on which run the usual coke handling de-.
is emploved in connection with a coke oven mouth of a coking chamber. That portion the door 32 to he slid verticalv. when in position at the mouth of a coking chamber. a
suflicient distance to loosen the door from the luting that is applied to fill up the cracks between the door and the mouth of the coking chamber.
The front face of the metallic shell 33 of each door is provided with an upper outwardly projecting bracket 37 and a lower similarly projecting bracket 38, connected together, if desired. by a vertical bracing web 39. Bored clear through the upper bracket 37 is a vertically extending hole 40, and in alignment with said hole 40 is a socket 41 bored in the lower bracket 38 and terminating above the bottom of said bracket, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Mounted at its uper end in the hole 40 and at its lower end in the socket 41 is a vertical rod 42 on which is pivotally supported a. hinge 30 43' embodying a vertical member'44 having upper and lower arms 45 and 46 which embrace the vertical rod 42 of the coke oven door and also having upper and lower arms 47 and 48 extending sidewise of the door,
47. 48 extend to and encircle a vertical rod 49 slidably supported in bearings 50, 51 I located respect-ivelybelow the arms 47 and 48. With this construct-ion, the coke oven 40 door may swing about the vertical axis of the rod 49 to open and close the mouth of the coking chamber 21 and the door may further swing when opened about the axis of the vertical rod 42; in addition to its swinging'movcment the coke oven door may slide vertically with respect to the jambs at the mouth of the coking chamber permitting the door to be loosened from the luting that fills the cracks between the door and the mouth of the coking chamber.
In order to effect a vertical sliding movement of the door to loosen it from its luting and then to swing the door into open position on its hinge, the invention provides a removable manually-operable door-lifting and swinging means. In its preferred embodiment. this means consists of a roller ,carriage 52 structurally independent of the door and adapted to be moved into position for lifting and swinging the door. Said roller carriage embodies in its construction a truck mounted on a small roller 53 and provided with a projecting horizontal abutment 54 that is adapted to enter the space between theupper and lower hori as shown in Figs. 1, 4 and 5. The arms zontal flanges 55, 56 projecting outwardly from the bottom of the coke oven door. As shown in Fig. 3 said flanges 55, 56 are provided with holes 57, 58 and the abutment- 54 is provided with a hole 59 that registers with the holes 57, 58 when the carriage is in operative position with respect to the coke oven door. A pin or any suitable removable coupling device may be inserted between the aligned holes 57, 59, 58 for the purpose of retaining the roller car riage in its operative position.
Mounted on the roller carriage 52 is a jack 60 of any preferred construction provided with the usual lifting rack bar 61 and the usual operating handle 62. When the carriage is in its operated position with respect to the coke oven door, the head 63 of the vertical rack bar of the jack is adapted to enter a socket 64 formed in the bottom face of the lower bracket 38. The head 63 of the lifting bar 61 is guided into the socket 64 by means of a vertical flange 65 depending from the bracket 38 at the rear of the socket 64. With the roller carriage 52 moved into the operative position shown, the jack 60 may be operated in the usualway to raise the lifting bar 61 into the socket 64 and lift the door to loosen it from its luting. As soon as this has been accomplished, the jack is locked in posi tion and the door may be swung open supported on the roller 53 of the carriage,
while the hinge members act substantially to guide the door in its swinging movement. In closing the door it is swung to closed position supported by the carriage 52 and when the door is in proper position for closing the mouth of the coking chamber the lifting bar 61' of the jack is lowered, whereupon the roller carriage 52 may be .m'oved into position for operating another door of the coke oven battery.
Secured to the web 39 on the front face of the door is a spring wedge 66 having an inclined portion 67 that is adapted to engage a horizontal wedge bar 68 removably supported between the buck stays on the opposite sides of the door. The lowering movement of the door at the termination of the closing operation effects a wed 'ng engagement of the inclined portion 6 of the spring wedge 66 with the wedge bar 68 to firmly lock the door in closed position. In opening the door the lifting movement moves theinclined portion 67 out of wedging engagement with the bar 68, so that the bar 68 may be removed and the door 0 ened in the manner herein before describe The invention as hereinabove set forth is embodied in a particular form of construction but may be variously embodied within the scope of the claims hereinafter made.
