To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDMOND N. CUssoN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in smoking pipes.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a pipe, such as above referred to, and which is so constructed, that the bowl thereof will be insured against clogging and gurgling, thus preventing any retarding of the proper and necessary suction incident to smoking.

Another object of the invention is the provision of means for preventing the gurgling in the pipe which is a hindrance to the smoker.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a pipe, in which the stem entrance to the lower end of the bowl thereof, is so formed that it will present a relatively long narrow opening, thus preventing the said stem from clogging and gurgling due to the entrance of tobacco thereto.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a pipe, such as above referred to, in which the entrance of the stem opening to the bowl is enlarged in elongated form, and so arranged that the pressure of tobacco in the pipe will at all times leave passages at the bottom of the said stem entrance, thus preventing clogging of such opening and always giving a regular and free drawing of the smoke.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a pipe such as above referred to, which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and etlicient in use, and readily operated.

With the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combi nation, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the present application; and in which,

Referring now to the accompanying drawings by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 6 designates in general a pipe, which comprises a bowl 7, stem 8 and mouthpiece 9..

The stem 8 and mouthpiece 9 have the usual aligning openings 10 formed therein, which lead to the lower end of the bowl 7 The inner end of the aperture 10 is placed in communication with the bottom of the bowl by means of a recess 11. This recess has a flat bottom 13 and straight sides 14 perpendicular to the bottom. Further, the recess is flared vertically towards the bottom of the cavity. Thus the recess terminates at the bottom of the bowl and lies partially beneath the bottom of the bowl, as shown in Figures 1 and 4. The width of the recess is small with respect to the width of the cavity, being substantially equal to the diameter of the aperture 10 as may be seen by a comparison of Figures 1 and 2.

Due to the Hare of the recess and its nar' rowness with relation to the bowl, the to bacco pressed into the bowl will avoid passing forwardly into the recess. A quantity of tobacco will, however, enter the portion of the recess directly beneath the cavity, but will not fill the corners of this portion, thus leaving the channels 16 at the opposite sides thereof. These channels will at all times form a passage to promote a suction from the mouth piece 9 to the interior of the bowl.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a pipe is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device and it should be understood in this connection, that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus fully described the invention, What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. A smoking pipe including a bowl having a cavity therein .and a stem having. an aperture formed therethrough, said cavity and aperture being placed in communication by a recess having a bottom flat in cross sec tion and side Walls perpendicular to the bottom, said recess being substantially equal in-horizontal width to the diameter of the aperture and "flared vertically towards the cavity, said recess terminating at the lower portion of the bowl and lyingpartially beneath the bottom of the'boivl.
