To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE Gonenna citizen of the United States, and resident of Catonsville, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas Ignitcrs, of which the following is a'specification.
My invention relates to a safety device for incorporation with gas burners, and is intended to eliminate the use of matches, or the like, in igniting the gas, and also to reduce explosion hazards to a minimum due to escaping gas.
The invention consists essentially in providing an air burning medium in proximity to a jet of the combustible mixture supplied to the burner, through which sparking device passes a constant electric current the circuit for whichis automatically closed as long as the flow of combustible gas continues.
I have illustrated one form of device in the drawings, which is a preferred embodiment of the invention, although I do not wish to be specifically limited thereto.

Referring with particularity to these drawings, I have shown a gas main at 1 connected to an electric mixer 2 for determining the proper mixture of gas and air which will be supplied to the burner 3. This burner may take either the form of the usual pipe having perforations therein, which results in a series of individual flames, or it may take the form of the torch burner 4 havin but a single flame 5.
Int e gas main 1 I provide an ordinary stop cock 6 to the top of which is secured a handle element 7 to open and close the same in the usual manner, but so arranged that it lies athwart the gas main when the flow of gas is cut'ofi.
Mounted upon the burner 3 I provide a hood 8 which terminates in a band 9 looped about the burner 3 in a manner to meet itself, and secured to the burner 3 as by means of-bolt 10. It is desirable that the hood 8 extend over the burner so as to catch an amount of'gas supplied to the burner. A
spark plug 13, or other suitable igniting deto vice, is secured to the band 9 at a point he neath the hood and above the burner so that the gas escaping from the burner will be caught by the hood, which will be in proximity to the sparking points, and igca nited from this point.

may be interposed between the primary and secondary circuits to deliver the proper amount and type of current to the spark plug 13.
In order to insure current reaching the terminals of the spark plug 13 whenever gas is flowing through the burners, I provide a circuit closer which consists of a base 22 upon which is mounted a lever 17 pivoted as at 18. One end of the lever 17 is provided with a roller 19 which is suitably insulated v from the rest of the device. The other end of the lever 17 is provided with a contact member 20 which may be made to contact with the binding post 21 to which is secured the lead wire 16. The contact 20, when brought 9 in proximity with the contact 21, closes the primary circuit which induces a current in the secondary circuit and a spark between the terminals of the spark plug. Upon reversing this opcuit is automatically closed because the handle 7 clears the roller 19, thus allowing the spring 23 to press together the contacts and 21. The circuit is now complete and the spark will occur at the terminals of the spark plug 13. A spark will continue at this point as long as current flowsthrough the circuit.
It will thus be apparent that the burner will automatically light as soon as the gas is turned on, even to a slight extent, as it is merely a matter of adjustment to have the roller 19 clear the handle 7 to make contact between members 20 and 21 at either wide open or slightly open position of the cup. It will also be noted that should the flow of gas temporarily cease, or the flames be blown out, the gas will instantly be ignited upon resuming the flow without thought from outside help, being entirely automatic.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination, a gas burner, a pipe supplying fuel thereto, a cock in said pipe, a handle therefor, a hood mounted upon said burner and adapted to receive a portion of the gas escaping from said burner, igniting means within said hood, anelectric circuit therefor, a circuit maker and breaker in said circuit, including a pivoted lever, saidcock handle, when in the shut-off position, causmg a depression of said lever whereby the circuit is interrupted.
2. In combination, a gas burner, a pipe supplying fuel thereto, a band encircling sald pipe, said band having an upwardly extending portion terminating in an overhanging hood, an outlet in said pipe for fuel, said hood overlying said outlet, and ignition means between the fuel outlet and the hood.
3. In combination, a gas burner, a pipe supplying fuel thereto, means to ignite the fuel escaping from said burner, including an electric circuit, said circuit comprising a pivoted lever making electrical contact between two points and normally closing the circuit between said points under action of the spring, a cock in said fuel supplying pipe, a handle therefor which in shut-off position extends outwardly from said pipe, a roller on the end of said pivoted lever, the
edge of the handle engaging the roller when the cock is in the shut-off position, which breaks the electric circuit.
