Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
CHARLES POORE, OF LEXINGTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAWING-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,303, dated June 23, 1874; application filed March 21, 187 4.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES POORE, of Lexington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Drawing-Board, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawiiig, Figure l represents a top view of my improved drawingboard; and Fig. 2, a detail vertical section of the saine, showing method of fastening the paper.
Similar letters otl reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object ot' my invention is to supply, for the use oi' engineers, architects, students, and others, an improved drawing-board, on which the paper can be placed quickly and neatly without the use ot' mucilage or glue, and without producing stift' glued edges or ridges, and thereby1 an inaccurate working of the T-square. My invention consists of a drawing-board, provided with grooves running parallel to and at a suitable distance from the edges of the same. r1`he inner sides of the grooves are slightly inclined, and the fastening-strips, of the width of the grooves, pressed down over the edges ofthe paper, to bind the same to the board.
In the drawing, A represents the drawingboard, made of any approved size and material. It is provided with recesses or grooves B, ot' suitable depth, which run parallel to all the sides of the board at some distance from the edge ot the same. The main part of the board, over which Jthe paper is to be stretched, is thereby separated from the outer narrower parts. The sides of the grooves along the main part are arranged under a slight downward inclination, as shown in Fig. 2. Fastening-strips C, made of wood or othersuitable material, and of the same width as the grooves, are placed into the same, and bind theedges of the paper to be stretched. The strips C are not made equal to thefull length of the grooves, but extend only from one corner of the. main part, or the point of contact with the strip of the next groove, to the outer edge ot' the board, as shown in Fig. 1. The strips are easily detached by raising' the back edge rst, by pressing the tinger along thc outer part of the grooves B not tlled up. Y
For using the board, the paper is moistened at the under side, in the usual manner, until the right side feels quite'damp to the hand. rlhe paper is then turned and placed over the central part of the board, and the edges crowded down into the grooves 'by the corre-l sponding strips until they rea-ch the bottom ot the grooves. The paper is held in position by the strips, and will be tight on the board on drying.
The nittinfr on of the )a )er re uires less time than with the boards now in use, produces no radial ridges or puckering of the paper, and admits oi' a more accurate workin g of the T-square, as the glued projecting edges are dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved drawing-board A, provided with recesses or grooves B parallel to its sides, and with fastening-strips C tttin g therein for attaching the paper, constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES POORE.
