citizen 'of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cooky and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon, which form a part of this specification.
rIhis invention relates to improvements in attaching devices and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
'Ihe object of my invention is to provide a simple, convenient and cheap attaching device, adapted for the securing together of two fianged partsV-the attaching device being such that it may be permanently connected to one of the flanges. Thus the annoyance due to the loss of attaching devices of the kind wherein bolts, screws and the like are used, is entirely obviated.
The several advantages of the device will appear as I proceed with my specification.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a view representing a top plan of a casing, consisting of a flanged shell provided with a removable cover plate, in which my improved attaching devices are used to connect the cover plate to the shell.
Fig. 2 is a view representing a transverse section through Fig. 1 in a plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view illustrating the steps of forming my improved attaching device.
Fig. 4; is a perspective view of said attaching device.
I have illustrated my improved attaching device as when used for attaching the cover plate to the shell or casing of a screw conveyor. The attaching devices are of special advantage for use in such or like position, by reason of the fact that the cover plate is required to be frequently removed in order to get at the interior of the screw conveyor for cleaning or for repairs. The conveyor and its casing of course form no part of my invention.
1() indicates my improved attaching device. A number of these as illustrated, are used to connect the cover plate 11, to the flanges 12 formed by angle bars 13, permanently attached to the casing or shell 14 along its tcp edges.
The attaching device is preferably made from a fiat bar of sheet metal. The bar is 'cut to the desired length and width and is One part 16 of said L- 65 edge of said part and is then bent downwardly into a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the part 16 to form a hook 19, the upturned end 20 of which extends preferably somewhat beyond the other edge of the part 16.
Said hook, as illustrated in Fig. 4, lies above the top face of the part 16, and is spaced therefrom a distance somewhat less than the combined thickness of the two flanges that are to be secured together. For example, in the case illustrated, the shortest distance between the bottom face of the hook 19 and the top face of the part 16 is slightly less than the combined thickness of either of the flanges 12 and of the cover 85 plate 11.
The operation of the attaching device is as follows: rlihe part 16 is riveted through the hole 17 to one of the flanges of the parts to be attached together,-as in this case to the fiange 12 of the angle bar 13. After enough of these attaching devices are riveted in this manner to the flange 12, they are turned Ioutwardly as indicated at 22 in Fig. 1 and the cover plate 11 is positioned with its latera-l edges engaging the top faces of the fianges 12. The attaching devices 10 are then swung home by means of a hammer and driven into the positions indicated at 23 with the bottom faces of the hooks 19 engaged on top of the cover plate 11.
rIhe ends 20 of each hook 19 are bent upwardly (see Fig. 2) so that they stand away from the top surface of the flange engaged by the hook, in this case the cover plate 11. Thus, when it is desired to remove the cover plate, the attaching devices may be swung into inoperative positions, one by one, by means of a hammer driven in each case against the uprising end 2G of the arm 19. The cover plate may be then removed.
The attaching devices being always in place and never removed from the ianges to which theyare connected,V there is no danger of them being lost or inislaid and after the repairs, cleaning or other Work has been done, all of the attaching devices are in place when it is necessary to return the cover and attach it to the shell.
I claim as my invention:
A device of the kind described7 adapted to be permanently attached to one of two Hanges Which are to be secured together, said device consisting of a bar bent to form Vtvvo arms substantially at right angles to each other, one of said arms having an aperture at one end by means of which it is pivotally connected to one of said anges, the other arm being bent upwardly along one edge of the irst mentioned arm to extend at rightV angles to the `plane'thereof` and then downwardly across `and transversely of said arm into a pla-ne substantially parallel With that of said first mentioned arm to form a resilient hook with an nptnrned end Which extends beyond the other edge of the first mentioned arm and rises above the flange With which it is engaged, so that it may be struck When detaching the device from the 'flange with which it is engaged. 1
