CYLINDRICAL GRINDING- TOOL.
Application led September To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ERNEST A. HALL, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, Province of "Ontario, Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylindrical Grinding Tools, of which thefollowing is a speciiication.
This invention relates to rotary tools for truing motor cylinders of the type in which a plurality of abrasive bars are employed operating simultaneously on the Whole or a considerable length of the bore of the cylinder, and which are sometimes referred to as cylindrical honing tools, and
.my object is to devise a tool of this type ers outwardly, VVhile various which is automatically adjustable to cylinders of different diameters and in which the abrasive bars, though resiliently pressed towards the work, are held at all times in absolute parallelism to the axis of the tool, and therefore grind or hone the cylinders true to their longitudinal contours.
I attain my object by means of the constructions hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a cylindrical grinding tool constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 a cross section of the same on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of part of `the tool.

1 is the body of the tool and 2 holders for the bars 3 of abrasive material. These bars are preferably rectangular `in cross vsection and fit the holders fairly closely, be-
ing secured in position by means of set screws 4. The holders are formed on or rigidly connected with pairs of laterally extending rock arms 5, which arms are hinged` on axes parallel to the axis of the body by means of the hinge pins 6 passing through lugs 7 formed on the body. The parts are accurately and closely fitted so that theholders, and therefore the bars, swing in and out substantially in exact parallelism to the axis of the body. I prefer the construction shown more pari and adjustable by means of the slotted head 10, by means of which the tension of the spring may be varied. The other end of the spring is engaged, preferably thro-ugh the medium of a sliding disk 14, With a plurality of bell crank levers 11 suitably located in recesses formed in the body of the tool. These levers are fulcrumed on pins 12 secured in position on .lugs 13 formed on the body 1. Each bell crank lever has its end projectin under the adjacent holder 2. The ho ders are thus simultaneouslyI and equally pressed outwards by the action of the sprin `8 and the outward pressure may be varie by adjusting the threaded stem 9.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A grinding tool for motor cylinders, including a body, spaced elongated abrasive members surrounding the body, means to connect each end ortion of each member to the body for swinging movements transverse to the axis Iof the body so as to retain the members parallel to the body in all positions of the members, means engaging the respective members between their ends to effect swinging movements thereof, and unitary means for exerting yielding outward pressure against each of the last named means.
2. therefrom; hinged connections between the" arms and the body, the axes of the hinges bein in alinement and parallel to the axis of t e body and close to a circle contacted by the working faces of the abrasive b ars, spring` means tending to press said holders outwardly; and means for adjusting the tension ofthe spring means.
4. In a device of the type set forth, a body, aA series of holders extending axially of the body, abrasive members carried by the holders, means to pivotally connect the holders to the body to allow the holders to swing transverse to the axis of the body, controlling means for each holder pivoted to the body and each having a freel part wipingly engagin the holder at a point between the perip e of the body and the bottom face of therllolder, and means to tension the controllingmeans to cause the latter to force the holders outwardly from the body.
5. In combination with a body having a central recess and peripheral slots, holders mounted on the body for outward movement relative thereto, controlling means for each holder mounted in the respective slots of the body and. having 'parts extending into said recess, and means mounted in the recess of the body to tension the controlling means.
6. In a device of the class described, a rotatable body, elongated abrasive members connected to the body lengthwise thereof in spacedrelation therearound for swinging movements transverse to the axis I of rotation of the body, the abrading surface of the members being retained parallel nearest to the body axis in all positions out swinging movements of the members, and a single means carried by the body and acting on the several members to exert a yielding predetermined outward swinging pressure thercagainst.
.7. In a device of the class described, a rotatable body, elongated abrasive members connected to the body lengthwise thereof in spaced relation therearound for swing' -axially socketed rotatable body, elongated abrasive members carried by the body len thwise of its axis and in' diiierent radia vplanes for swinging movements transverse to the body axis in permanent parallel relation thereto, and tension means housed in the body in engagement with re-v spective members to exert a' uniform outward swinging pressure thereagainst.
