Description

H. S. M SAVANEY ILLUMINATED SIGN Filed Sept 20, 1922 n it HENRY S. MGSAVANEY, 0'5 SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE MCSAVANEY 00111- PANY, 3F SPRINGFIELD, 01-110, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
ILLUMINATEI) sren.
Application filed. September 20, 1922. Serial 2%. 5%,3e0.
To czZZ whom it may Goa-worn:
Be it SAVANEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful ln'iprovements in Illuminated Signs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to illuminated signs; it elating more particularly to a sign of the character which is designed for installation upon the fuel pumps employed at the filling stations for motor vehicles.
in object of the invention is to provide an arrangement in which there is employed one or more metallic face plates impressed with any desired characters of a peculiar perforated nature so arranged that the plates may be readily removed from. the main casing for the purpose of obtaining access to the easing or for the purpose of installing new face plates with characters of a. different nature; the arrangement also permitting the interchangeability of the face plates in signs where double face plates are employed.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a sign embodying the improvements.
Fig. 2 18 a vertical section. Fi 3 1 enlarged section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. I
Fig. l 18 an enlarged section on the line l& of Fig. 1.
section of a part of 1mg. 5 is an enlarged one of the face plates and one of 1ts defiectors.
linoivn that l, HENRY S. M0
ivardly to provide a circular flange 5; the portion a being so formed as to provide a peripheral channel, as shown.
The face plates (5 are seated against the flanges and held in position by split spring rings 7 of the portions Each of the face plates is formed of sheet [metaland stamped to form a series of disks 8 of concave-convex shape which project inwardly at asuitable angle with. their convex faces presented to the rays of any suitable light, (not shown) preferably electric, located in the casing, so that the disks act as deflectors to deflect the rays of light through the openings left by the punching operation.
In order to properly center the face plates in the casing each of the plates has formed tiereon a. rib 9 and the cooperating flange 5 has a recess 10 to receive the rib.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
In an illuminated sign consisting of a sheet metal casing having means for attach-,
ment to a support, said casing being of cylindrical form open at its'sides, separate sheet metal face plates forming the sides of said casino each of said face plates having formed therein a series of openings to represent a character or characters, each of the side edges of said casing being bent backWa-rdly substantially parallelfWit-h the casing Wall and depressed outwardly to form an annular channel and thence bent inwardly to form a flat circular flange to provide a seat for the corresponding face plate, the smallest diameter of the backwardly bent portion of said casing being suficient to permit the insertion of one of said face plates over that portion of the, casing and over the channel to its seat against said flange, and a spring ring in each channel to hold said face plates in position against said flanges.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of September 1922.
" HENRY s. MCSAVANEY.
