ALBERT C. EVANS, OF BUTTE, MONTANA.
PRNTERS LOCK-UP SQUARE.
Application iled December 12, 1923. Serial No. 680,214.
To all. iff/7mm if 71mg/ concern.'
le it known that l, ALBERT C. EVANS, a citizen ot the United States, and a resident et Butte, in the county ot Silverboiv and Siate of Montana, have invented certain new. andusetul improvements in Printers" Lock- Up Squares, or which the following is a .pecilieation My invention relates generally to improvements .in devices for locking up type forms, and more particularly to a device which is adapted for use in conjunction with a prini'ers chase having' no scale markings thereon, and it consists in the combination, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
'lhe object oit the present invention .is to provide a device. ofthe character described which a'tlords facilities whereby it may be used in conjunction with a printers chase ot the character described to indicate the position of a type form of any one of, a plurality of ysizes when the type torm is in centered rela-tion Within the chase and to indicate at` the saine time the number of pieces ot turniture which will be required to secure the type torni in centered position Within the chase. I
A further object o't the invention is to provide a device oft the character described which is light in Weight, economical to manufacture and conveniently and readily applicable to a printers chase for the purpose set out in the foregoing.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent trom the following description considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, iu which:
liigure is a` plan view, showing an enibodiment ol the invention in position tor use on a printers chase, the latter being shoivn diagrammatically; and,
Figure 2 is a side elevation ci the chase with an embodiment ot the invention thereon.
As is vvell known, considerable ditiiculty ordinarily is encountered and considerable time is consumed in ascertaining the centered position oft a type torni Within a printers chase having no scale markings thereon since measuring operations are-necessary to determine the centered position ot the vtype iform and to also determine the number ot pieces ot furniture which Will be required to secure the type torni Within the chase. To obviate the necessity of making any measurements-in pl acing a type form ot any one ot a plurality ot sizes Within a chase of the character described, l provide); a device which l term a printers square and which will. be so referred to hereina'ter.
As is ivell known, at the present time there are in use thousands oit' cha-ses made or cast iron which are not susceptible or" having pica markings placed upon them, and it is intended by the manufacture of this square, to supply this need.
The printers square comprises a right angular body, indicated generally at l, and consisting ot. bar like-members 2 and l, respectively. The inner edges of the bar like members and lie in planes extending at right angles to each other. rlie upper faces oi the bar-like members 2 and l prelerably are flat and lie in the same plane. The lower taces ot the bar-like members and 3 likewise are flat and lie in the same plane. TheI members 2 and 3 respectively are of such length that the inner edge ot o ne oit these members, in this instance the member 2, will coincide with length with the irmer edge ot the transverse member ot the printers chase 4e, and the inner edge oit the member 8 Will coincide in length `with the inner edge et a longitudinal member ot the chase 4 when the body l is placed upon the chase et vvith the member 2 disposed upon the a't'oren'ientioned transverse member ot the chase and the member 3 disposed upon the longitudinal member of the. chase.
'the member 3 is provided with a scale extending on the upper 'face thereof along` the inner edge ot' such member, the scale including graduations spaced apart to indicate picas. rlhe values o't the graduatioas ot' the scale 5 increase in value. trom the outer end ot the member 3 and 'from a line extending trai'isverse y oit the member 3 in the plane of the inner edge ot the member 2 toward a line Which extends transversely to the member 3 midway of the length oit the inner edge of the member 3, such transverse median line being indicated at. (3.
In a like manner, the member 2 is provided With a scale indicated at 7, consisting oi spaced apart graduations on the upper tace ot' the member 2 along the inner edge oj the, latter, the graduations oit the scale indicating picas, and increasing in value from the outer end ot the member and 'from a line extending transversely ot the member 2 in the plane o't the inner edge o l the member 3 to a transverse line or gradlli) lll)

crease in value from the inner end of theY thereof may be readily understood. body l is placed upon the printers chase so Y tending The member 3 also may be provided with a scalev 9 extending along the out'er'edge thereof and consisting ofgraduations spaced apart to indicate units of linear measure# rEhe graduations of the scale'9 'inmember 3,' that is the end thereof which lies inthe plane of the outer edgeof then-iember 2, toward the outer or free end of the member 3i The member 2 likewise may have a linear scale indica-ted at Vl0, provided thereon 'to extend along the outer edge thereof, the linear scale 10 having the graduations vthereof marked to'increase in value from the inner end of the member 2 that is from the end which lies in the plane of the .outer edge of theinember?) toward the outer or free end of the member 2, *Y 1 1 'From the foregoing `description of the various parts of theV device, the 'operation that the inner edge of the member 2 will substantially coincide with the inner edge of oneof the ends or transverse members ofl the chase.,y and the'inner `edge of the mem-, ber 3 willY occupy a similar position in rre-V spect to the inner edge of one -of the sides or longitudinal members of the chase. A
Y type form of any one of a plurality of sizes sides of the type form are equal' .in value.Y
Thiswill 'be true since straight lines .eX-
inwardly fromA theV transverse median lines 6` and 8 will intersect each other at the center of the chase 4 when the body lrhasV been positioned on the chase in the manner described. The values of The 'ed claim.
the graduations of the scale 5f at the ends fof the type form and ltheV values of the graduations of therscaler? at the sides of Y thetype form when the typek form Yisl cen'-V tered within the 'chase will Yindicate the numn ber of pieces of furniture which will be required to secure the type Vform within the chasein centered relation to the latter.
' From the foregoing,` .it will beV obvious vthat vno measuring operation is required during the securing or lockingup of. a.
type form 'Wi-thina chase havingno scale markings thereon when'my printers square is used in Vconjunction Ywithtlie chaseandV Y of embodimeiibin' forms other than that illustrated in the accompanying drawings,LV
and I therefore consider as my own all such modifications and adaptations Ythereof as clearly fall Vvvithin thescope off the append- Iclaim:`. I
prising a body consisting of two elongated fiat members Joined together; at one end land extending at right angles to each other,
each of said members havinga 'printers Y scale produced thereon and extending' along the inner edgefthereof, the printers scale on each member terminating atV one end' in the plane oftheinner edge of the'otherV member and the' scale on one'of Vsaid mein! bers being equalin length to the inner edge of a transverse member ofa printers chase while lthe Vscale lon the 'other member Vis.` i Y equal in length'to the inner edgeof a Alon-Y gitudinal member of the chase, the gradu ationsofv each of saidfscales increasingrin' median line thereof.
