CIGARETTE CONTAL'NER.
Application tiled .March 22, 1924, Serial No. 701,080.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that JULIUS C. McCoy, citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Mercer and State of lVest Virginia, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette Containers, of which the following is a speciication, reference being' had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain improvements in paper containers of the dispensing slide type in which cigarettes: are commonly packaged by manufacturers for1 sale to the public.
The purpose of the invention is to provide such ak container with simple and ineX- pensive match holding means so designed and attached to the receptacle as to require no modification of the latter, aside from a slio'ht increase in length.
ther purposes and advantages of the invention will be more readily understood from the following detailed description and accompanying drawings, in which` Fig. l is a perspective view of a cigarette container or package of conventional form having my improved match holding means associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the container and match holding means as these parts appear when the container is fully closed.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the dispensing slide and match holding blanks assembled.
Fig. t is a sectional view on the line 4L`t of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the container in side elevation, the slide being partly withdrawn from the casing and the Hap of the slide open to expose the matches.
In the drawings, I have illustrated a conventional cardboard cigarette container which includes an outer casing 5, and a dispensing slide 6 positioned within said outer casino' and provided with the usual closure flap having a portion 7a functioning to close the adjacent end of the slide and an eX- tension 7b functioning to close a portion of one side of the slide as is usual in cont-ainers of this type. For the purposes of my invention both the outer casing and slide are made slightly longer than is customary but are not otherwise changed from the conventional design. This slight increase in length is resorted to in order to afford sufficient space within the slide 6 for the reception of my improved match holding means designated'generally by the numeral 8 and positioned as best shown in Fig. 2 between the section 7a of the closure flap 7 and the adjacent ends of the cigarettes 9.
As herein illustrated, the aforementioned match holding means consists of a substantially rectangular sheet of cardboard which is provided with parallel longitudinally eX- tending score lines 10 dividing the sheet into three sections, respectively designated 10a, 10b and l0". A package of matches ll, of the so-called safety type is secured by a binding wire l2 to the central section l0b of the sheet and a strip of match scratching material 13 is preferably interposed between the said wire and the matches to provide a convenient means for igniting the datter when detached. The match holding means, as thus completed, is attached to the slide G in the following manner: Section l0a of the match holding sheet is glued or otherwise fastened to the portion 7 of the closure liap 7 so as to move with and constitute a substantially integral member of the said flap. The sections 10b and l0l2 are bent, on the score lines l0, to form, with the section l0, a substantially rectangular casing enclosing the matches ll on three sides, the top of the match casing in the closed position of the flap 7 being formed by the section 10a, the bottom of the casing being formed by the section 10 and one side of the casing being formed by the section 10b. The ends of the casing thus formed are closed by the side walls of the slide 6 while the remaining side of the casing is closed by the extension 7b of the closure flap.
lVhen the cigarette container' is fully closed, the sections 10a, l()b and 10c of the match casing are disposed, as shown in Fig. 2, but when the closure flap 7 is moved to open position, the section 10a, moving with the flap portion 7a, will function to elevate the sections 10h, l0C and the matches ll above and to one side of the adjacent ends of the cigarettes 9 so that the latter may be conveniently withdrawn from the casing. The position of the parts, in the open position of the container, is clearly illustrated in Fig. 5. y
lVhile in the foregoing I have disclosed Awhat I now consider to be thepreferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes may be resorted to Within the scope and spirit of the ap pended claim.
What Iy claim as nersT is:
A cigarette Container comprising an outer casing, a dispensing slide positioned in said casing and provided with a flap having :i main portion adapted to Close one end of the slide and an extension portion adapted to partially olose one side of the slide, a strip of ardboard bent upon itself to provide a match housing having top and bottom Walls and a side Wall, said top Wall being` flatly en-' gaged With the inner side of the first mentioned portion of the flap and permanently secured thereto, and matches secured to and carried by the side Wall of the housing, said housing being normally positioned between the first mentioned portion of the flap and the adjacent ends of the cigarettes and being` so joined to the flap as to move with the latter to a cigarette exposing position.
In testimony whereof l hereunto aixiny signature.
