HARVEY J. WIER, 0T5 OPELOUSAS. LOUISIANA.
SUNDIAL.
Application filed December 4, 1822.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY J. 'Wmn, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of ()pelousas, in the parish of St. Landry and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sundials, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined sun dial, advertising medium and tourist guide and has for an object the provision of novel means whereby the position of the sun will indicate the time on a graduated face; the said device also having novel shadow producing means, and novel means for adjusting the same vertically to compensate for the different courses of the sun as the seasons change.
It is a further object of this invention to produce a dial and novel means for support ing the same, the said dial being associated with advertising areas that are changeable; and the said invention has for a further object, the production of a support for the dial and parts thereof, whereby a strong and durable structure results which will prove efficient and satisfactory in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application wherein like characters denote correspond ing parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a front elevation of a sun dial embodying the invention;
Figure 2 illustrates an edge elevation thereof;
Figure 3 illustrates a rear view thereof;
Figure 4 illustrates a sectional view on the line 44; of Fig. 3;
Figure 5 illustrates a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 3;
Figure 6 illustrates an enlarged detailed view of the mounting for the gnomon.
In these drawings, 10 denotes a suitable post having cleats 11, 12 and 13 secured to it and extending across its face, the said cleats Serial 310. 604,944).
having a disk or face element 14 secured to them. The disk is provided ith numbers by which the time of the day will be indicated according to the shadow that is produced when the shadow resulting from the presence of the gnomon 15 strikes across the face of the disk. The central portion of the disk is arranged in a field to be occupied by a removable element or face plate 16 which may contain advertising matter of any appropriate type, and this element may be removably secured in place by fastenings such as screws or the like, it being understood that said element has an aperture 17 forming a clearance for the anchorage of the gno-mon, as will presently appear.
The disk also has a segmental area 18 at the top which may be occupied by an advertising card, the character of the advertising being, of course, immaterial.
The plate 19 is secured to the disk or face element 14 and it has a hollow interiorly threaded boss 20 into which a stem 21 is threaded. The outer end of the stem is preferably slotted as at 22 and the shank 28 of the socket 24: is oscillatably mounted in the said slot and it may be secured therein at different positions of adjustment by the screw 25.
The arm or gnomon 26 is applied to the socket and may be oscillated with the socket to alter the position of the gnomon up or down, according to the position of the sun as the seasons change.
The upper end of the post has a brace 27 connected to it, and the said brace bears against and is secured to an extension 28 of the disk which is shaped or ornamented to simulate that part of a watch having the winding stem and ring, so that the invention in its completed state is of attractive appearance and of utility as a time indicator and an advertising device.
I claim:
1. In a combined sun dial and advertising device, a disk, means for supporting the disk, a plate having an apertured boss internally threaded secured to it, a threaded shank engaging the threads of the boss, said shank having a slot in its outer end, a socketed element having a shank oscillatably mounted in the slot, and a gnomon e2 tending outwardly from the disk and carried by the said socket.
2. In a combined Sundial. and advertising device, a disk, a post for supporting the disk vertically, said disk having numbers concentrically arranged near its edge below the axis of the disk and a legend near each edge of the disk above the numbers indicating directions, a removable disk havlng arrows depicted thereon pointing toward thelegends, a bracket above the center of the disk between the arrows, and a gnomon connected to the said bracket.
HARVEY J. VVIER.
