Description

T. F. COTE FUSE PLUG Original Filed April 26, 1921 Patented Dec. 23, 1924.
UNITED STATES THOMAS F. COTE, F MONTREAL, QUEBEC, GANADA.
rusn mm.
Application filed April 26, 1921, Serial Ho. 464,52t. Renewed May 1c, 1925.
- To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that l, THOMAS F. Corr, a subject of the King ofGreat Britain, residing at Montreal, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'f use Plugs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will ,enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse-the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fuse plugs of the character set forth in my Patent No. 1,424,714 and has for its primary object the provision of means for closing the ends of the insulating sleeve which permits easy and quick removal of a burnt or destroyed fuse and the replacement of another in lieu thereof and also establishes an eficient electrical connection between the fuse contact and the ferrule.
Another object of this invention is the provision of grooves arranged in the closing means of the sleeve for the purpose of permitting the gradual escape of fumes or gases from the body to the atmosphere caused by the burning or fusing of the fuse and said grooves preventing the direct escape of flame from the body to the atmosphere, consequently reducing fire.
A further object of this invention is the provision of means for indicating when the fuse is destroyed and also adapted to indicate the amperage of the fuse and further to retard the entrance of foreign matter to the interior of the'loody.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a fuse plug of the above stated character, which will be simple, du rable, and eflicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination,
and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed;
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a fuse plug constructed in accordance with my invention, a
Figure 2 is a ver ical sectional view illustrating the cover with the ferrule located therein,
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating the sleeve with the closure caps applied I thereto,
Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating a modified form of cap.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a body constructed from porcelain or any other material suitable for the purpose and is provided with a ch'amber 2 and one end of the body is closed by an end wall 3 provided with a centrally arranged opening 4; to receive a contact 5 that projects slightly beyond the outer face of the end wall as clearly shown in Figure 1. The contact 5 consists of a hollow body 6 that has its outer end closed and its inner end has formed integrally therewith a flange 7 adapt- 5 ed to seatagainst the inner face of the end wall 3. a The. other end of the body 1 is opened and closed by a removable cover 7 constructed from porcelain or any other material suitable for the purpose and said cover has seated therein a ferrule 8, the side walls of which have pressed therein screw threads 9 adapted to cooperate with screw threads 11 formed within the cover 7 and also adapted to cooperate with screw threads 12 formed on the body 1 to detach ably secure the cover 7 to the body. The screw threaded wall of the ferrule 8 pro- I jects beyond the side wall of the cover 7' and overlies aportion of the body and is co adapted to have threaded connection with the usual fuse socket (not shown). The cover 7 is provided with a centrally arranged vent opening 13 in its top wall and alines with a vent opening 14: formed in the ferrule 8.
Aninsulating sleeve 14 is arranged within the chamber 2 and spaced from the wall thereof and has its ends closed by closure caps 15 of cu -shape and the s1de walls thereof are slig tly flared outwardlyas illustrated at 16 at their edges for facilitating opening 18 for the purpose of permitting fumes or gases within the interior of the sleeve to escape into the body on the burnferrule 8. The ferrule S is constructed from a suitable metal.
- 14 and the interior of the body. The caps- 15 have pasted or otherwise secured thereto The closure caps 15 have a plurality of radially extending grooves 19 pressed in their outer faces and the grooves'of one cap establish communication between the vent disks 20 hearing the amperage of the fuse and of a size substantially equal to the size of the vent opening 14' and one of said disks, depending on which cap is disposed uppermost, is adapted to close said vent opening. The disksalso close the inner ends of the grooves 19, thus it will be noted that the grooves as well as the ventopening 14' are closed by said diskpreventing the entrance of foreign atter into the chamber 2. The disks are cons ucted from paper or any other material which is readily destructible by fire andthe disks are pasted or otherwise secured onto the respective caps.
The destruction of the fuse 17 by an overcharge of electricity, causes the same to burn out and create a certain amount of flame and gases which escape into the chamber 2 whence they may expand into the interior of the contact 5 and also gradually escape from the chamber 2 by way of the grooves in the uppermost cap and the vent openings 151 and 13 respectively. The disk 20 being of a fragile material will quickly become destroyed or mutilated by the flame and gases as they escape from the chamber 2 and thereby indicate that the fuse has been destroyed without the necessity of removing the cover 7 and ferrule 8 from the body in order that the uppermost cap 15 may be removed from the sleeve in order to expose the fuse.
As shown in Figure ,4 the disk 20 may be dispensed with and the amperage of the fuse may be stamped or otherwise applied directly to the caps.
The contact 5 being of hollow formation allows the gases entering in the chamber 2 from the sleeve 14 to expand into the same whence said gases may gradually escape back into the chamber and thence out to the atmosphere by way of the vent openings 13 and 14 and the grooves in the uppermost cap. The body 6 of the contact 5 being of hollow formation also permits the flange '7 to be easily formed by simply bending or stamping a portion of the body laterally.
While I have shown and described the Having thus described my invention what I claim 1s 11A fuse plu comprising a body, a fur-.
rule for said he y and having a vent, a contact for said body, a sleeve in said body and having an opening, a fuse in said sleeve, and caps closing the ends of thesleeve and securing the fuse to the sleeve and engaging the contact and the ferrule at the vent, said caps having grooves and the-grooves of one cap establishing communication between the vent and the interior of the body.
