Application filed May 26, 1922. Serial No. 563,878.
Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Door Silencer, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to a silencer device that is adapted to be applied to a door for the purpose of eliminating noise when the door is closed, such a device being useful in hospitals or in other places where the sound of a closing door is objectionable.
The object of my invention is to provide a door silencer that is particularly simple and inexpensive in construction, and which may be readily applied to any door without interfering with the working of the latch or bolt. A further object of my invention is to provide a door silencer so formed that diiferent portions thereof may be brought into use after other portions thereof have been worn, so that a silencer can be kept in service for a considerable length of time.

Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a door silencer embodying my invention.

Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sectional views of the door silencer shown in Fig. 1, illustrating the material. of which the silencer is composed.

Referring to the drawings, my improved silencer consists of an endless band 1 of some flexible, compressible material, such as rubber, the band 1 either being tubular in cross section, as shown in Fig. 4 or being more or less cellular, as shown in Fig. 5, as when the band is formed of rubber sponge material.
When applying my improved band to a door, one end thereof is first passed around the post 2 of a door knob 3 on one side of a door, after which the band is stretched occurs.
enough to permit the other end thereof to be passed around the post 4 of the door knob 5 on the opposite sideof the door, so that the band 1 then appears as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. With the band 1 in this position, the parallel sides thereof extend around the front edges 6, so that when the door is closed the band will pass into the space between the face of the door and its casing, and being wedged therein, will tend to hold the door closed.
As the door is closed the band prevents any noise which might arise from either edge 6 of the door striking that portion of the casing with which it usually engages when the door is closed, and it is apparent that the side portions of the band 1 will be flattened out around the edges 6, as indicated at 7 owing to the compressible material of which the band is formed. Obviously, any wear on the band 1 will occur at the points 7 and when this wear becomes noticeable, it is only necessary to shift the band enough to bring a fresh portion thereof into engagement with the front edges 6 of the door.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that by my invention I have provided an extremely efi'ective door silencer which, when applied to a door will substantially eliminate all noise due to the closing of the door. Furthermore, my improved silencer can be quickly and cheaply manufactured, and is adapted to give a maximum amount of wear, inasmuch as the whole length of the band 1 can be moved to the points where the wear When the silencer is made in tubular form, as shown in Fig. 5, a certain amount of air is enclosed therein, so that the silencer has a pneumatic cushioning eifect when the door is closed and portions of the tube compressed. This pneumatic effect practically eliminates all possibility of noise.

I claim,
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a door provided with knobs on opposite sides thereof, of a door silencer consisting of an endless tube of elastic material containing air passing around the said door knobs.
2. in a device of the class described the combination with door provided With knobs on oopositesides thereof, of a door silencer consisting of an endless rubber tube containing air passing around the said door knobs.
3. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a door provided will: knobs on opposite sides thereof of a door silencer consisting of an endless PnBUHmlilU tube passing from one door knob to the other around the edges of the door.
