' wo'o1. WASHING MACHINE Filed lAugj 1s. 1923 Patented Dec. 23, 1924.
U N I T E D FRED Wf SWAIN, OF DUNSTABLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO C. G'. SARGENTS SONS CORPORATION, OF GRANITEVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
"WOOL-WASHING MACHINE.
Application filed August 18, 1923.
To all whom if may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRED l/V. SWAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunstable, in the county of Middlesex and State of lilassachusettsl,l have invented a new and useful Vool-lVashing Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the ducker or immerser roll usually carried at the feed end 'l0 of a wool washing machine.
The principal object of the invention are to provide means whereby it can be held at different eleva-tions in the liquor and the provision of means for allowing` an outlet for l5 any liquid which may work inside the cyl1nder.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. l is a side view of a wool washer showing a. preferred form of my invention applied thereto;
F ig. 2 is a plan thereof; ant
F ig. 3 is an enlarged side view of the roll supporting means.
I have shown the invention as applied to a well known type of washing bowl 10 having a reciprocating rake 11 but I have not shown the details of the washing machine. The bowl is provided at the opposite sides with a pair of brackets 12 which support a pair of studs 13 in axial alignment. On each of these studs is an arm 111 pivoted to swing about the stud.
One of the studs 13 is in the from of a shaft carrying a driving pulley 15 and a gear 17. This gear 17 meshes with a. larger lgear 18 on a shaft 19 which is supported in bearings on the two arms 14. This shaft extends clear across the bowl and carries upon it a. rotary ducker or immerser roll 20. This is in the form of a hollow metal cylinder provided with a series of longitudinal radially projecting blades 21 extending throughout the length of the cylinder. Be- 15 tween these blades there are a series of perforations 22 through the metal walls of the cylinder.
Extending up from each side of the bowl at a convenient point are two brackets 25 each having perforations at dierent Serial No. 658,145.
heights. Each of the arms 14 is provided with a bolt 26. These bolts are mounted movably in the arms and can be withdrawn and placed in any one of the perforations in the bracketsI 25. In this way the cylinder can be held at any desired elevation and immersed as far as desired in the liquor. By these bolts 26 the bearing levers la are firmly bolted in position to hold the cylinder bearings rigidly.
In this way it will be seen that the cylinder can be placed at any desired elevation and that any liquid which may work inside the cylinder can drain out through the perforations 22.
Although I have described and illustrated only a single form of the invention, I am aware of thc fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims.
Therefore I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described but what I claim is 1. The combination with a washing bowl, of a pair of pivoted bearing arms having for a sha-ft, a ducker roll having a shaft resting in said bearings and extending across the washing bowl, the washing bowl having supports providing with perforations at different elevations therein and bolts mounted on the beariirg arms adapted to extend into said perforations and hold the ducker roll at different elevations.
2. A combination with a u-'ashing bowl, of a pair of studs mounted on opposite sides thereof, a pair of bearing arm-s pivoted on said studs and having bearings for a shaft. a ducker roll having a shaft resting in said bearings and extending across the washing bowl, a pair of brackets on the edges of the washing bowl having perforations at different elevations therein and bolts mounted on the bearing arms adapted to extend into said perforations and hold the ducker roll at different elevations.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto aflixed my signature.
FRED W. SWAIN.
