To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WALDHEIM, a citizen of the United States, residin in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and tate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
v This invention relates to sound-deadening hoods or casings for typewriting machines, and is in the nature of improvements whic may be used with the casing shown in my application, No. 423,848, filed November 13, 1920 (now Patent No. 1,499,709, dated July 1, 1924), and the application of B. C. Stickney, No. 429,617, filed December 10, 1920.
An object of the invention is to provide a casing which may readily be attached or detached to and from the machine without removing any part of the machine. To this end, the casing may comprise a base or main section having four walls, one bf which may be opened to admit the machine into said casing. The wall which may be opened is herein shown at the front of the machine, and may be a removable plate which is secured in place on the casing by suitable fastening means. The keyboard section of the typewriting machine extends through the opening at the front of the casing, and the removable front plate is provided with a cutout, so as to straddle the keyboard section of the machine, and also the usual line-lock release key, and the ribbon-color shift-keys. Abutments are provided at the rear of the casing and on the front plate, to assist in locating the machine and easing relatively to each other. A cover is hinged at the rear to the base portion of the casing, and may be swung open to have access to the platen, margin stops, etc.
A feature of the invention relates to means for lifting the cover when it is released from a latch which normally holds it in its closed position. Said means may comprise a linkage connected to the cover and under the control of a spring which may be concealed Within the casing.

The casing comprises a base or box-like portion 10, to which is pivoted a cover 11 by means of a hinge 12. The forward edge 13 of the cover forms, with the upper edge 14 of the front wall of the base, a slot 15 (Figures 1 and 7) through which a linespace handle 16, a carriage-return 17 and a carriage-release-key 18 may project, so that the laten 20 of a typewriting machine within t e casing may be line-spaced, and the carriage 21 returned or released without lifting the cover 11.
The base 10 and cover 11 may be re-enforced so as to add to their strength by frames 22 and 23 comprised principally of angle iron to which outer shells 24 and 25, composed of thin sheet-metal, may be r1veted, as indicated at 26 and 27, respectively (Figures 7 and 9). The base frame' 22 comprises an underlying C-shaped portion 28, which has two risers 30 (Figures 3, 5 and 7) at the back secured thereto by corner plates 31, and two risers 32 at the front secured thereto by corner plates 33. The rear and front risers 30 and 32 at each side may be connected at their upper ends by end bars 34 secured thereto by corner plates 35 and 36. The rear risers 30 are connected with each other by a bar 37, which may comprise the lower part of the hinge 12. To further add to the strength of the frame 22, it is provided at the rear with a central riser 38 secured to the C-shaped portion 28 and the cross-bar 37.
The cover frame 23 comprises two end portions arched to' conform with the shape of the cover, and connected at their rear ends by a cross-bar 41, which forms the upper part of the hinge 12. The lower part of the cover frame is formed by end bars 42 joined to the end portions 40 by plates 43, the end portions 40 and the end bars 42 being secured to each other at the front by struts 44. A cross-bar 45 extends between the two end portions 40, and is secured thereto by corner plates 46 (Figures 5 and 7) to form the front of the cover frame.
The cover 11 is provided with a glasswindow 47, which may have a border 48 of leather, felt or any other sound-deadenlng material, and is held in place, between the front bar 45 and an additional cross-bar 50 of the cover frame, by clamps 51, of which there may be one at each corner (Figures 3 and 7), each clamp being held in place by a screw 52.
The cover may be held down against the tension of one or more springs 53, there bein two springs shown herein, one at each si e of the casing. Each spring may be connected at one end to a bracket 54, secured to the end bar 34 of the base frame, the other end of the spring being connected to a lever 55, pivotally mounted at 56 on a bracket 57, also secured to the end bar 34. The lever is connected with a link 58 to 'the cover frame to swing the cover 11 up about the hinge 12. To prevent the opening abutments 84 comprising angularly disposed of the cover except when. so desired. there may be provided one or more latches 60. The latches may be pivoted at 61 on the brackets 54 secured to the base frame, and each latch may be normally held over an associated stud 59 on the cover. frame by a spring 62. To open the cover, the latches 6! may be operated by finger-pieces or keys 63 at the lower ends of stems 64 to swing the latches about their pivots 61 and out of engagement with the studs 59. The cover is then swung up by the springs 53 through the medium of the levers 55 and links 58. Each bracket 54 is provided with two stop: 65 and 66, to limit the movement of the latch 60 in both directions. To limit the opening of the cover 11, the levers 55 may engage with stops 67, which may be'carried by the links 58 and engage said levers, as indicated tached, the casing may be slipped around .the
machine from the rear back with the cover open so as not to interfere with the carriage. The front plate may then be fastened to the casing, as hereinafter described.
To assist in locating the casing relatively to the machine, abutments 71 are provided to engage the rear corner-post 72 of the typewriting machine; the abutments 71 comprising sheet-metal brackets 73 secured to the frame 22 of the base 10, and pieces 74 of sound-deadening material being fastened to the engaging portions of said abutments. After the machine is placed inthe casing, the front plate 70 may be fastened. i
The fastening means herein shown for the front plate comprise one or more slides or bolts 75 movable up and down on headed studs 76 by finger-pieces 77 formed at the middle or top of the slides 75, as shown in Figures 1 and 3, respectively. Each slide has hooks 78 to engage behind studs 79 on the front risers 32 of the base frame 22 when the slide is depressed.
To assist in locating the front plate 70 vertically relatively to the front of the casmg, so t iat a lower cushion or flexible strip 81, carried by the front plate, may bear the proper relation to an upper cushion or strip 82 of a slot-closing means, hereinafter described, there are provided on the front plate two fork-like members 83 to embrace the upper studs 79.
The front plate is also provided with two brackets 85 covered with pieces 86 of sounddeadening material to engage the front corner-posts 87 of the machine (Figures 4 and 8). It will be seen that the abutments are oppositely disposed to the rear abutments 71 and that the casing is clamped in place through the medium of the front and rear abutments when the front plate is fastened.
The typewriting machine comprises the usual keyboard section 90 extending forlmi wardly from the two corner-posts 87, said keyboard section comprising type-keys 91 adapted to swing type-bars 92 to print through the usual rlbbon (not shown) against the front of the platen 20, the typebars being arranged in an are, so that they may swin in radial planes to the printing point. T e usual line-lock release key 93 and the ribbon-color shift-keys 94 extend forwardly through a front cover plate 95, and are arranged above the type-keys 91 (Figure 5); the cover plate extending between the front corner-posts 87, andbeing secured thereto in the usual. way b screws 96, the cover plate being also provi ed with the usual arcuate cutout 97, whichconforms with the arcuate arrangement of the typebars 92, and through which a brush may ordinarily be inserted to clean the types 98 of the type-bars.
The removable front plate of the casing is provided with two downwardly-extending arms 100, upon which the slides are sup ported, said plate having a major cutout 101 between said arms (Figures 3 and 4), so that the plate when attaching it may straddle the keyboard section of the machine. Said plate is also provided with a segmental extension 102 to cover the cutout 97 of the cover plate 95 when the'casing is assembled around the machine. By the projection of the extension 102 into the major cutout 101 of the plate 70, two minor cutouts 103 are formed at the sides of said extension 102 to straddle the line-lock release key 93 and the ribbon-color shift-keys 94 (Figures 3, 4 and 5).
From the foregoing, it will be understood that among the advantages of the removable front plate 70 are the following: The assemblin of the casing around the machine is facilitated without removing any parts thereof, and, further, that access may be had to the types for cleaning the same by simply removin said plate.
Since the end ars 34 of the base frame 22 serve as ledges upon which the cover rests, a felt strip 104 is secured to each ledge to prevent undue noise when closing the cover and to provide a substantially sound-proof connection. The front plate 70 serves as a tiebar between the two side walls, due to the fact that the locating members 83 of the front plate engage the headed studs 79, and thus any tendency of the side walls to spread, due to the pressure of the cover on the ledges 34, is overcome.
- The means for closing the slot 15, through which the handles 16 and 17 and the carriage-release key 18 extend, may comprise the two cushions 81 and 82, which are oppositely disposed and being sufficiently yieldable to allow free movement of the handles and the release key. Each cushion or strip comprises a folded piece of felt or other suitable material connected between two bars 105 and 106 (Figures 6 and 7) fastened to each other by bolts 107 to form a single unit, which may be detachably mounted on the casing by screws 108. Preferably each of the strips 81 and 82 is held so as to be in the form of a tube. The unit comprising the upper cushion may be secured to the crossbar 45, which forms the forward edge of the cover 11. The unit comprising the lower cushion may be detachably mounted at the upper edge of the front wall of the base 10.
The line-space lever 16 may extend forwardly and curve downwardly over the usual front scale plate 110 (Figure 7), and then extends forwardly between the cushions 81 and, 82, and is provided, so that it may readily be operated, with an upwardlyextending finger-piece 111 at its forward end. The line-space lever may be readily attached to the carriage in the usual way.
The carriage-return handle 17 also extends over the scale plate and out of the casing between the cushions 81 and 82, and is so constructed that it may readily be attached to the front bar 112 of the usual carriage frame. For this purpose, the handle extends downwardly in back of said bar 112 at 113 to embrace the said bar and is held in place thereon by a clamp late 114 (Figure 7), which may be drawn tightly against the front bar by screws 115.
The carriage-release key 18 comprises a detachable extension; 116 to embrace the usual finger-piece 117, and is held in place thereon by a clamp 118. It may be depressed to swing about its pivot against the tension of a return spring 120 to raise a feed-rack 121 out of mesh with an escapement pinion 122 to release the carriage. The depression of the carriage-release key would ordinarily cause considerable compression of the lower cushion. To avoid this, however, the unit comprising the lower cushion 81 is mounted to move bodily to one side of the slot 15 when the carriage-release key is operated. For this purpose, the cushion 81 is mounted on a cross-bar 123 (Figures 4 and 7), the cross-bar being depre'ssible by the carriage-release key tomove the cushion downwardly therewith. The cross-bar may be guided in its movement by a parallel linkagecomprising bell-cranks 124 connected to each other by a link 125, said bell-cranks being pivoted at 126 on upwardly-extending brackets 127 of the front plate 70. The return spring 120 for the cushion 81 is connected between one of the brackets 127 and the link 125. One of the bell-cranks may be provided with a stud 128, which may engage in a hole 130 in the bracket 127 to limit the return movement of the cushion 81.
It will be understood that both the base 10 and the cover 11 of the casing may be lined with felt or any other sound-deadening material. The cover plate 95 of the mawhich a work-sheet 134 may project when chine is also lined wit-hfelt, as indicated at 131 (Figure 5). To prevent leakage of sound at the frontof the machine, the releasable front plate is provided at the rear thereof with a felt lining 132, secured thereto, to engage the cover plate 95 of the machine and also the front posts 87 .(Fig- 'ures 5 and 8).
The base is provided with pockets 133 into the carriage is in its end position.
The casing and the machine may be set upon a stiff felt pad 135 to prevent the sound of the machine from being transmitted to the table upon which the machine may be supported.
As hereinbefore pointed out, the casing may be slipped around the machine from the rear thereof, in which case the machine is first placed on the pad. It should also be understood that the casing may be first placed on the pad with the cover'and front plate 70 released and the machine then placed into the casing from the top thereof.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with a typewriting machine comprising a carriage and a controlling lever mounted on said carriage'for movement in a vertical plane, of a casing for said machine, said casing having a slot therein through which said lever extends, means including a cushioning strip to keep the slot closed when the lever travels along the slot with the carriage and in normal relation with the latter, and means actuable by said lever when moved toward said strip to shift the latter bodily to prevent undue crushing thereof.
2. The combination with a typewriting machine comprising a carriage and a vertically-movable carriage-release lever on. said carriage, of a casing for said machine, said: casing having a slot therein through which said lever extends, means including a cushioning strip to keep the slot closed when the lever in its normal position .on the carriage travels therewith, a bar mounted on said casing and extending along said slot to be engaged by said lever when the latter is moved toward said strip, and means connecting said bar with said strip to move said strip bodily in the direction of movement of said lever when the latter is operated, thereby avoiding undue crushing of the strip.
3. The combination with a typewriting machine comprising a carriage and a lever operable on said carriage, of a casing for said machine, said casing having a slot therein through which said lever projects,
a cushion extending along said slot to keep the slot closed when said lever travels with the carriage in normal relation thereto, a bar operable by said lever, said cushion being supported by said bar, and a parallel linkage to guide said bar, when operated, to move said cushion bodily to one side.
4. The combination with a typewriting machine comprising a carriage and a lever.

The combination with a typewriting machine comprising a carriage and a lever operable on said carriage, of a casing for said machine, said casing having a slot therein through which said lever projects, a strip extending along said slot to keep the slot closed when the lever travels with the carriage in normal relation thereto, means to facilitate a bodily movement of said strip by said lever, a spring to return said strip to its slot-closing position, and a stop to arrest said strip in the last-mentioned position.
7. The combination with a typewriting machine comprising a carriage and a fingerpiece shiftable on said carriage, of a casing for said machine, said casing having a slot therein through which said finger-piece extends and along which it travels with the carriage, a cushion extending along said slot to normally keep said slot closed, and means operable by said finger-piece to shift said cushion bodily away from said slot to avoid undue pressure on the cushion when the finger-piece is shifted.
8. The combination with a typewriting machine comprising a carriage and acarriage-release key, of a casing for said machine, saidcasing having a slot therein through which said release key extends,
slot-closing means, said slot-closing means comprising two cushion members on opposite sides of the slot and a spring which urges said cushion members toward each other to maintain said slot-closing means effective, and means actuable by said release key to relieve said cushion members from the'urging of said spring to avoid undue pressure of the release key on the slot-closing means,
9. The combination with a typewritlng machine comprising a carriage and a lever on said carriage operable in a plane perpendicular to the path of the carriage, of a sound-deadening casing for said machine, said casing having a slot therein through which said lever extends, and slot-closing means comprising a cushion strip extending along said slot to keep it closed when said lever travels with the carriage in normal relation thereto, a member oppositely disposed relatively to said'cushion strip to cooperate therewith in closing the slot, and yieldable supporting means for said member to permit movement by said lever away from said cushion strip.
10. The combination with a typewriting machine comprising a carriage and a release lever on said carriage, of a casing for said machine, said casing having a slot therein through which said release lever extends and along which it travels with the car riage, slot-closing means comprising a cushion extending along one, side of said slot, a device at the side of the slot opposite said cushion to co-operate with the latter in closing the slot, said device comprising a bar dep-ressible by said release lever to withdraw said device so as to avoid undue interference thereby with its movement transverse to said slot and along said slot with the carriage when in operated position, a spring to return said bar to normal position, and a stop to arrest said bar in its normal position.
11. The combination with a typewriting machine having a frame and a keyboard projecting from the lower front portion thereof, of a sound-deadening casing for the machine comprising a body-part to receive said frame, a cover for said body-part, the front of said body-part having an opening of a width to receive said keyboard therethrough and extending to the top of said front, means for closing the front of said casing when the machine has been inserted, comprising a front cover-plate to close the opening above and at the sides of the keyboard, and means, including releasable bolts, for pressing the cover-plate againstthe machine frame to position it in the casmg and for securing the cover in closed position.
12. The combination with a typewriting machine having a forwardly-projecting machine comprising a carriage and a fingerpiece on said carriage, of a sound-deadening casing for said machine having a detachable front plate to be removed when the machine is to be inserted or removed, the upper edge of said front plate forming with the upper front portion of said casing a slot through which said finger-piece may extend, and slot-closing means comprising a yieldable strip carried by said plate and caused to yield locally by the finger-piece as the latter moves along the slot.
.said slot to keep the latter closed, one of said strips being supported by the casing, the other being supported by said plate.
14. The combination with a typewriting machine having a frame and a keyboard projecting therefrom, of a sound-deadening casing to enclose all of said machine but the keyboard and comprising four walls and a cover, one of said walls having an opening to permit the insertion of the machine in the casing, locating means carried by said casing opposite said opening to effect the proper relative positioning of said machine and said casing when assembled, and a cover-plate to be secured across said opening and to press the machine against said locating means. 15. The combination with a typewriting machine, of a sound-deadening casing comprising a body-portion having overhanging side walls and an open front to receive the keyboard and permit placement of said casing around the machine, and a hinged cover to rest on said side walls when closed, and a front plate attachable to the walls and extending across said open front above the keyboard, said front plate when attached serving as a reinforcement in the nature of atie-bar between said walls to maintain them in the proper positions to support the cover.
'16. The combination with a" typewriting machine, of a sound-deadening casing having an open front to permit placement of said casing around the machine, a front plate, means to guide said front plate into the proper vertical position on said casing when the former is moved rearwardly toward the latter, and means to secure said plate to said casing.
17. The combination with a typewriting keyboard, of a casing'havin an open front to receive said keyboard an permit lacement of said casing around the machine, a front plate to close said front around the keyboard,' and means for pressing said front plate rearwardly against said front and detaining it in such position, comprismg a slide on one of them and a projection on the other to be engaged by said slide.
18. The combination with a typewriting machine, of a sound-deadening casing therefor, having an open front to permit proper relative positioning of the casing and the machine, a cover-plate for said open front, means for fastening said cover-plate on said open front comprising co-operative fastening devices on the casmg and the coverplate, and means to guide the cover-plate as the latter is moved rearwardly into position to bring the fastening devices into co-operat'ive .relation. 19. The combination with a t pewritmg machine having a keyboard, 0 a casing having an open front to receive the keyboard a-nd permit placement of said casing around the machine, a front plate to extend across said openfront above the keyboard and close said open front around said keyboard, a reinforcing frame for said casing, studs on said frame, slides on said front plate, and hook-like projections on said slides to engage said studs to fasten the front plate closely on said casing.
20. The combination with a typewriting machine, of a sound-deadening casmg therefor, having an open front to permit proper relative positioning of the casing and the machine, a cover-plate for said open front, means for fastening said cover-plate on said open front comprising co-operative fasten ing devices on the casing and the coverplate, and a member movable in a plane parallel to the open front to enga e said fastening devices, and means to gui e-the coverplate as the latter is moved rearwardly into position to bring the fastening devices into co-operative relation.
21. The combination with a typewriting machine, of a casing for said machine, said casing having sides and an open front to permit placement of said casing around said machine, a cover for said casing to be supported by said sides when in closed position,
' ledges extending along the upper edges of the sides of said casing to support the sides of said cover and to insure a proper bearing of the sides of the cover on the sides of they casing, and a front plate attachable to said casing, said front plate serving as a reinforcement betweensaid sides to maintain the proper spacing the-rebetween.
22. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting ma-thine, said casing comprising a body-part and a cover-part, said body-part having a front wall, sound-deadening material interposed between said front wall and the front of the typewriting machine around the keyboard thereof, and means to compress said sound-deadening material between said front wall and said front of the machine to seal the openings between said front wall of the casing and said front of the typewriting machine.
23. The combination with a ty writing machine 'having a keyboard pro ecting at the front thereof, of a sound-deadening casing from which said keyboard projects when said machine is properly positioned therein, said casing comprising a front wall and a rear wall, one of said walls being removable to permit the casing to be slipped over the machine in the direction of the opening to position the casing on the machine, and means carried by the detachable wall to secure the latter to said casing.
24. The combination with a typewriting machine having a keyboard projecting at the front thereof, of a sound-deadening casing from which said keyboard projects when said machine is properly positioned therein, said casing comprising a front wall and. a rear wall, one of said walls being removable to permit the casing to be slipped over the machine in the direction of the opening to position the casing on the machine, means for securing the removable wall on the casing, and means rendered effective by said removable wall When secured on the casing, for holding the machine and the casing in their proper relative positions.
25. The combination with a typewriting machine having a forward keyboard extension, of a casing having an open front to facilitate placement of said casing around the machine, a detachable tie-plate to connect one side of the casing with the other at the front thereof, said plate having a cutout to straddle the forward extension of the machine, and means to secure said'tie-plate to the casing at opposite sides of said open front.
26. The combination with a typewriting machine having a forward extension or keyboard section, type-bars arranged in an arc, a front plate secured to the frame of the machine, said front plate having an arcuate cutout to conform with the arched arrangement of the type-bars, "a key projecting through said front plate at one side of said arcuate cutout, and a key extending through said front plate at the other side of said arcuate cutout, of a casing for said machine, said casing having an open front to facilitate its placement around the machine, a detachable front plate to be secured to said casing after the latter has been placed, said detachable plate having a cutout to straddle the keyboard section of the machine and the keys projecting through the front plate of said machine, and a downward extension on said detachable plate to cover the arcuate cutout of the front plate on said machine.
27 The combination with a typewriting machine comprisng a keyboard and keys projecting from the front of the machine and above the keyboard, of a casing having an open front to facilitate placement of said casing around said machine, and a detachable front plate for said casing, said detachable plate having cutouts for said keys.
28. The combination with a typewriting machine comprising a keyboard and a key projecting from the front of'the machine near said keyboard, of a casing for said machine, said casing comprising a front plate, the latter having a major cutout to clear the keyboard of the machine, and a minor cut-- out to clear said key.
29. The combination with a typewriting machine having a main frame comprising posts, a keyboard section extending forwardly from said posts, and a front plate extending betwen said posts, of a casing for said machine, said casing having an open front to facilitate its being placed around said machine, a detachable plate having a cutout to straddle the keyboard section, means to secure the detachable plate to the front of the casing, and means in back of the detachable plate to bear against the front plate of the machine and a ainst the posts when the detachable plate 1s secured in place on said casing.
30. The combination with a typewriting machine, of a casing to be placed around said machine, means on said casing to embrace the machine to locate said casing relatively to said machine, and means at the front of said casing to clamp the latter in place on said machine.
31. The combination with a typewriting machine, comprising a frame having cornerposts, of a casing for said machine, and means on said casing to engage the cornerposts of the machine to locate the casing relatively thereto.
32. The combination with a typewriting machine, comprising a frame having cornerposts, of a casing for said machine, means on said casing to engage the corner-posts of the machine to locate the casing relatively thereto, and means for securing said casing in place after locating the same.
33. The combination with a typewriting machine, comprising a frame, of a casing for said machine, abutments extending from the rear of said casing to engage the frame of the machine to position the machine laterally and from front to rear, abutments at the front of the casing to engage the frame, each abutment having a piece of sound-deadening material thereon where it engages the frame, and means to clamp the casing in place relatively to the machine.
34. The combination with a typewriting machine, of a casing therefor to deaden the sound when typing and having an open front through which the keyboard projects, sa1d cas1ng comprising means in the rear portion thereof to embrace the machine to 7 locate said casing and said machine relatively to each other, a removable front plate to close the front of said casing around the keyboard and to be removed when the machine is to be placed in or withdrawn 7 from said casing, means on said front plate to embrace the machine and press it against. the rear embracing means, and means to secure the front plate on said casing to close the casing and to hold the machine in proper position therein.
35. The combination with a typewriting machine, of a casing for said machine to deaden the sound of the latter when operated, sald casing comprising an open-top baseportion of flexible material, a cover of flexible material hinged thereto, a re-enforcing frame for said base-portion, a re-enforcing frame for said cover, a lever pivoted on one of said frames, a link connecting said lever with the other frame, and a spring connected between one end of said lever-and the frame on which said lever is pivoted, said spring tending to open said cover and the stress produced by said spring being taken up by said re-enforcing frames.
36. The combination with a typewriting machine having a frame with a front, comprising two posts at the sides thereof. of a sound-deadening casing for said typewriting machine comprising a body-portion having a front wall to extend above the keyboard of the machine and down at the sides thereof, and sound-deadening material interposed between the front wall of the casing and the front of the machine, said sound-deadening material comprising strips interposed between the front wall of the casing and of said posts of the machine.
37. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a frame, a keyboard projecting therefrom and a carriage, said casing comprising a body-portion having an open front for insertion of the machine, and overhanging parts at each side to accommodate the carriage when moved fromits central position, a cover hinged at its rear to said body-portion and engaging said overhanging parts when closed, and a tiemember to extend across said open front to insure proper engagement of said cover with said overhanging parts by preventing spreading of the latter.
38. The combination with a typewriting machine havin a carriage and a carriagerelease lever, of a sound-deadening casing for said machine and within which said lever is enclosed. said casing having a slot in its front parallel to the path of the carriage,
a supplementary finger-piece extending through said slot, and means for securing the rear end of the supplementary fingerpiece to said lever, so that the lever can be actuated from outside of the casing when the latter -is closed.
39. The combination with a typewriting machine having a carriage, a platentherein and a carriage-release finger-piece adjacent one end of the platen, of a casing for said machine having a transverse slot in the upper front portion thereof, and a supplementary finger-piece extending through said slot and connected with said carriage-release finger-piece, so' that actuation of the supplementary finger-piece will effect release of the carriage.
40. The combination with a typewriting machine having a carriage. a platen therein and a carriage-release finger-piece adjacent one end of the platen, of a casing for said machine having a transverse slot in the upper front portion thereof, a supplementary finger-piece for actuating said carriagerelease finger-piece from the outside of said casing, said supplementary finger-piece being provided with means to embrace said carriage-release finger-piece when placed in engagement therewith. and means to clamp said supplementary finger-piece on said carriage-release finger-piece 41. In a typewriting machine, the combnation with a casing therefor having a slot therein, of a carriage, said carriage comprising a front bar, a detachable fingerpiece to extend through the slot in said casing to return said carriage, and means to secure said finger-piece on the front bar of said carnage. 42. In a typewritlng machine, the combination with a casing therefor having a slot I therein, of a carriage, said carriage comprising a front bar, a detachable finger-piece to extend through the slot in said casing to return said carriage, the rearend of the finger-piece extending over and behind the front bar of said carriage, a clamp late to engage the under side of said bar, an screws to draw the clamp plate to the finger-piece to secure the latter on said bar.
43. The combination with a typewriting machine having a carriage, and a gerpiece on said carriage, of a casing for said machine, said casing having a slot therein through which said finger-piece extends, a slot-closing-strip, two bars, means to fasten said bars together to hold s'aid stri therebetween, said strip and said bars ibrming a unit, and means to fasten said unit on said casing.
44. The combination with a typewriting machine having a carriage, and a fingerpiece on said carriage, of a casing forsaid machine, said casing having a slot therein through which said finger-piece extends, a slot-closing unit, said unlt comprising a strip folded to form a cushion two bars between which the ends of the strip are held, screws to hold said bars together, and screws to secure said slot-closing unit in place on said casing.
45. The combination with a front-strike typewriting machine having a frame, a keyto the types for cleaning the same.
46. The combination with a typewriting machine having types arranged at the front thereof, the machine havin an opening at the front to give -access or cleaning the types, of a sound-deadening casing for said machine open at the front, and acover on said casing to co-operate with the front of the machine to close said opening in the front of the machine and consequently the opening in the front of the casing above the keyboard, removal of said cover permitting cleaning of the types.

The combination with a front-strike typewriting machine having a frame, a keyboard, types normally arranged at the front thereof and 'a front plate secured to said frame above said keyboard and cut away at the to to give access to the types for cleaning, 0 a sound-deadening casing having an open front through which said keybo'ard projects, and. means for closin the open front of the casing above the key oard, comprising a front plate to close the opening in the front plate of the typewritin machine.
48..A sound-deadening casin or a type writing machine having a re-en orcing memher at the lower edge of the re'ar wall, upright re-enforcin posts at the ends of said member, and an a utment for engaging each rear post of the machine and having a support extending laterally and rearw'ardly to the adjacent post and a second su port extending rearwardly and downward y to said re-enforcing member.
