To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY TV. Dvnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new, and useful Improvements in Doorlocks, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to door locks, particularly of the mortise type, and has for an object to provide a lock of thiskind which is compactand will fit a narrow door frame,other objects are to simplify the construction and assembly of the parts and to provide an exit door lock which may have a panic bar attachment for use 111 public buildings. Other objects will appear from the following specification and the accompanying drawings, in which, Fig. 1 is a plan view of one side of the lock mechanism, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the opposite side of the lock mechanism, Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the operating mechanism, Fig. 4 shows the lock in place on a door, Figs. 5 and 7 are details of the lock bolt, Fig. 6 shows the plunger upon which the bolt slides.
This invention is shown applied to an exit door which opens outwardly having a. latch and lock for releasing the bolt from the outside and a cross-bar on the inside of the door which independently releases the bolt when pressure is applied to this bar. For the latter, however, an ordinary knob with a cam, or a latch may be substituted as the lock mechanism herein disclosed may be used with any type of operating mechanism.
' The frame of the lock mechanism consists of an angular plate 12 having a rectangular guide 14 in which the bolt 13 slides. This bolt is made from bar steel and drilled with a longitudinal hole 20, Fig. 5, which slides on the plunger 15 secured to the stand 16. The coil spring 17 on the plunger 15 gives the'bolt 13 a bias moving it to the latching position. Rectangular openings 18 and 19 are milled from the sides of the bolt as shown leaving a ledge on the top and at both ends. The bolt is sloped at the outer end in the usual way and can readily be milled from bar stock.
A pair of levers 21 and 23, pivoted at 22 to the plate 12 are arranged with their ends 27 engaging the recess in the. bolt 13, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The top ridge of the bolt prevents the ends of these levers from rising and these levers, against the guide 14 and engaging the end ridge of the recess limit the outward movement of the bolt while the backward movement of either lever. 21or 23 will withdraw the bolt while the other lever may remain in its position as shownin Fig. 1.
One of these levers is moved by the operating mechanism. on one side of the door and the other bythe operating mechanism on the opposite side of the door. The plate 12 is provided with a slot 25 through which the end of the thumb latch47, pivoted at 46 and having the thumb piece 45 extends to engage the lever 23 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This is similar to the. extension 24 of the lever 26, pivoted at 28 and which terminates in a bar 26 extendin across the door. It will be noted from 1, that raising 24 will engage the inclined face of 21 and move this lever to the right thereby withdrawing the bolt 13, hence the movement of the latch 45 or the movement of the lever 26 will independently withdraw bolt 13.
The locking mechanism operates through the lever 31 pivoted at 32 and having a pin 33 extending through slot 25 as shown. This lever is held in tension by fiat spring 34 which is clamped in the projections 35 as shown. It will be noted from Fig. 3 that pin 33 is arranged to engage lever 23 only.
.Movement of this lever requires a corresponding movement of the pin and lever 31.
A cylinder lock 42 is secured to the face plate 41 and the key 43 operates the lock dog 44, Fig. 2 into or out of engagement with the lever 31, thereby providing a means for locking and releasing the mechanism so that the bolt may be withdrawn by the thumb latch 45. This locking effect is limited to the operation of lever 23 and lever 21 may be operated at any time to release the look from the inside.
A raised boss 51 is provided on plate 12 to which the upper end of bracket 53 is screwed and the lower end of this bracket and the upper end of handle 54 are secured to the raised boss 52 as shown in Fig. 4. The plate 12 is made reversible for right or left hand locks having slot 25 in the upper end and the operating levers may be attached as shown by dotted outline at 22.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a door lock of the class described, the ombination of a rectangular bolt havabuttin Ill) ing a rectangular recess in the side, a guide for said bolt, a plunger upon which said bolt slides, a spring on said plunger moving said bolt outwards, a pivoted lever engaging the recess in the side of said bolt and cooperating with said guide to limit its outward movement, and means for moving said lever to release said bolt.
2. In a door lock of the class described, the combination of a rectangular bolt having a recess in the side, a guide for said bolt, a plunger upon whichsaid bolt slides, a plurality of pivoted levers engaging the recess in the side of said bolt and cooperating P with said guide to limit the movement of said bolt, means for moving one of said levers from one side of the door and means for moving the other lever from the other side of the door, and means for locking one of said levers to prevent its movement.
3. In a door lock of the class described, the combination of a rectangular bolt hav ing a recess in its side, a guide for said bolt, a plurality of pivoted levers engaging the recess in the side of said bolt and cooperating with said guide to limit its movement, a latch for moving one of said levers and a cross-bar on the opposite side of the door formoving the other lever and a cylinder lock for preventing the movement of the lever operated by the latch.
4. In a door lock of the class described, the combination of a bolt, a. slide for said bolt, a spring associated with said slide for holding said bolt in the engaging position, said bolt having recesses 18 and l9 in its sides, a pair of pivoted levers having inclinec'l faces with their ends engaging the recesses in said bolt, a guide in the frame of said lock for said bolt, said levers co-operat ing with said guide for limiting the outward movement of said bolt and means engaging the inclined faces of said levers for withdrawing said bolt.
