UNITE STATES JACOB HEINRIGE LUDWIG BOETTCHER, 0F ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
DEVICE FOR PACKING ARTICLES.
Application filed June e, 1923.
To all whom; it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAcoB HEINRICH Lunwie BOETTCHER, a citizen ,of the United States, and resident of Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Packing Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a certain new and original device to facilitate the packing of crackers or other articles adapted to be acked thereby. Considerable diflicult-y has been experienced in packing crackers and other articles in boxes; and this difficulty has been more apparent in lined than in unlined boxes, because the paper lining has a tendency to crinkle and et out of shape, which results in causing oss of time and annoyance to the operative filling the boxes.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which includes means for holding the article in position to be packed, and for spreading and holding open the box or container, with its hner, if any, during the packing operation.
Another object consists in providing certain improvements in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts whereby the above named and other objects may be effectively attained.
Practical embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 represents a top plan view of the device.
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof.
Figs. 3 and 4 represent longitudinal sections showing a modified form.
The device comprises, in general, atrough or holder in which the articles to be packed are placed, which trough includes meansfor temporarily holding the articles in position. The trough or holder is provided at its outlet extremity with certain elements that are adapted to hold the box, and its lining, if any, spread open while the articles are being placed in the box.
Referring to the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, 5 designates a trough or holder. In the drawings this is shown as being longitudinally curved and channel-shaped in cross section lit has a base or floor 6 and. sides 7. However, it might be made of various shapes to suit the shape of the articles to be placed in the box.
Secured to the lower part or base of the Serial No. 813,353.
holder is a fixed extension 8. This is of a substantially firm construction but it might advantageously be made flexible under certain conditions. This extension is preferably a trifle less in width than the inside of the trough and has its outer extremity rounded so as to ermit of a more ready access into the lined or unlined box. This extension also acts as a support for the articles as they are being slid out of the holder into the box.
Pivoted at 9 to the sides 7 of the holder are L shaped members 10, which have flexible extensions 11 secured to their short legs. There are preferably two of these, one on either side, thus leaving a space between them, for the passage of the implement used by the operative to push the articles into the box. These flexible extensions normally rest on the lower fixed extension 8, as shown in Fig. 2.
Additional flexible members 12 are secured at 13 to the sides of the holder, and they extend out beyond the end of the holder between the lower extension 8 and the upper ones 11. These act as side guides for the articles as they are being forced into the box, and kee the paper at the sides of lined boxes from o structing the path of the articles as they enter the box.
In handling certain articles, it is desirable that they stand on edge, and it is important to provide means to prevent them from fallingflat prior to being pushed into the box. A simple means of accomplishing this is shown in the pair of flexible spring members 14 secured at 15 to the sides of the trough. These members are made of very light, flexible material, and while they are strong enough to perform their desired function, they Wlll not cause any serious obstruction to the passage of the articles out of the holder or cause injury to them.
In the case of large, thick articles which might lie flat in the holder and not require this positioning, the members 14 might advantageously be eliminated.
In operation, the articles, marked A, are placed in the trough or holder 5, and a box or other suitable receptacle B, which may or may not be provided with a lining G, is placed over the extensions 8, 11, 12, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4a The operator, with a suitable implement, or with his hand, pushes the articles A from the holder through the extensions 8, 11, 12 and into the box. This movement of the articles-past the said extensions naturally separates the latter and thereby causes them to hold the box,
and lining, if any, spread open, so that there will be no interference with the passage of the articles into the box.
It will be understood that various changes may be resorted to in the form, constructlon and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; and hence, I do not intend to be limited to the details herein shown and described except as they may be included in the claim. p o
What I claim is:
In a device of the character described, the combination of a channel-shaped trough or holder for the articles, spring means on each side of said trou h or holder adapted to press against and old erect the articles between said. spring means, a fixed extension secured to the lower part of the trough or holder, said fixed extension being less in.
width than the inside of the trough or holder, a pair of movable upper extension members ivoted on the side wall of the trough or ho der at a point approximately midway between the upper and lower edges of'said wall, each of said members com rising an tance to permit the passage therebetween of a pushing implement for moving the articles out of the trough or holder into a receptacle, and a plurality of intermediate spring extensions secured at their inner ends to the side walls of the trough or holder and extending be 0nd the end of said trough or holder a shorter distance than said upper and lower extensions. 1 a
In testimony, that .I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 31st day of May, 1923. I
JACOBJ-lI-IINRICH LUDWIG BOETTCHIIR.
