Application filed March 5, 1924.
To a'Z'Z fit-horn it may concern Be it known that l, Roi-snr T. (Matignon, residing at ltllemphis, yTennessee, a citizen ci the United States, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Combe, ot which the i'ollov\iugis a speciiication.
My invention has to do with the treatment ot human hair 'for straightening or dyeing it, etc., and the object ot my invention is to provide an instrument or appli' ance by which a liquid to be applied to the hair may most eiliciently be applied and the manipulations required in its use may be most readily performed and a special object of my invention is to provide the appliance with means Yfor heating oil or other liquid which requires heating in the treat-4 ment of hair and to heat that portion of the appliance which has contact with the hair in those cases where heating is necessary or desirable. My invention consists in whatcver is described by or is included within the terms or scope ot the appended claims.
1n the drawings l illustrate an embodiment of my invention in which F ig. 1 is a longitudinal section of the appliance;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of rig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. e is a detail view ot a wickholder that may be used.
Briefly described the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings has. the formation of a comb with teeth of ordinary form in combs for merely combing the hair and which in the part corresponding with the usual back of the comb has two parallel, longitudinally extending chambers one oi which is a container or reservoir for oil from which ports or passages pass to the comb teeth and have their exit or discharge ends on the teeth and the other chamber which is situated between the container or reservoir and the comb teeth is a heating chamber, the heating being done by an electric. heater placed therein or by some other heat imparting instrumentality so that the heat is applied to the oil in the container or reservoir and to the portions of the comb through which. the oil is fed to the teeth, as well as to the teeth.
Referring now in some detail to what is shown in the drawing the comb com- Serial No. 697,698.
prsing the back, 10, and the teeth, 11, conveniently made in one-piece of glass, brass, aluminum or any other metal or material has at one end a handle, 12, which may be of metal and hollow or in one piece with the rest of the comb, but which if made as a separate piece as shown inthe drawings may be att-ached to a round projection, 13, at one end ot the back over which one end of the handle may be slipped and the two secured. together by a set screw, 14, or other means. Extending longitudinally of the comb back is a chamber, 15, for oil or other liquid which at its outer end is closed by a removable screw cap, 16, tor placing liquid therein and from such cham-- ber ducts or ports, 17, pass whose outlet or discharge ends are at the sides ot the teeth of the comb there being preferably although not necessarily such a duct for each tooth. The feed ot' oil from the container or reservoir may be produced or controlled in various ways. As shown in the drawing a valve device may be employed which consists ot a rod, 18, extending through a passage that intersects all ot the ducts and which for each duct has a cooperating pas-- sage which by a sliding movement of the rod may be placed into or out ot alinement with the duct and thus permit the flow of liquid or stop it. Said valve may be held at one limit of its movement to cut off the flow of oil by a coil spring, 180, bearing against one end of the rod, against the pressure of which the rod may be moved to open the valve by a button, 19, on the exterior ot the comb.
1n the comb back between the liquid reservoir, 15, and the teeth is a longitudinally extending chamber, 20, which is the heat supplying chamber and situated so it sup-- plies heat to the oil in the reservoir and to the oil as it passes through the ducts and to the teeth, said chamber, 20, alining with a longitudinally extending passage, 2l., in the handle, 12. Nithin the heat supplying chamber may be placed the heating element, 22, of an electric heater, the wires from which pass outward through the passage, 21, in the handle, the current being turned on or out off by a switch, 23, which may be a sliding switch ot well known construction on the exterior of the handle, 12. 1n those cases where electricity is not availlll able for heating a metal rod first heated ou a gas stove, lamp or otherwise may he thrust or inserted into the chamber, 20.
Instead of using a valve to control the .How of oil or liquid :troni the chamber, 15, a Wick or bod;7 of absorbent material may be placed in such chamber, 15, saturated with the liquid. ln this case (see Fig. t) a slender rod or Wire, 24, may he attached at one end to the screw cap, 160, on which may be Wrapped or Wound twine or Wool or other absorbent material, this being a convenient Way of supporting and inserting and removing the Wick. ln some eases it may be desirable to employ some form of force feed for the oil or liquid and l contemplate providing such a feed.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A hair treating appliance Comprising a liquid container and hair engaging means to which liquid may be supplied trom such container and heating` means comprised in a chamber intermediate said liquid container and said hair engaging means.
2. A hair treating appliance comprisingl a comb With back and teeth, a liquid holding chamber .in the back, means 'for con veying liquid from such chamber to the ox terior of the teeth and heat-inn` .means sil-- uated in the eomb back.
3. A hair treating appliance coinprsirur a comb having back and teeth. the haelt having two longitudinally extendingha1n bers one of which forms a liquid reservoir and from which ducts lead to the eomh teeth, the other chamber being iuterintuliate the liquid chamber and the teeth and adjacent to said ducts and heating` means in snc-h other chamber.
l. A hair treating;- appliance connn'isintI` a comb having back and teeth, the liar-lf having?r two longitudinallyv extending chain' bers one of which Yforms a liquid reservoir and from which ducts lead to tlnl comb teeth, the other chamber being? intermediatithe liquid chamber and the teeth and ad jacent to said chiots4 and means to control the liow of liquid through sueh duets and heating` means in such other chamber.
In testimoniY whereof I hereunto allix my signature.
ROBERT T. CAMERON.
