UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHOE-POLISHING DEVICE.
Application filed March 16,1922. Seriall no. 544,312.
To all whom it may concern.-
'Be it known that I, ABRAHAM GOLDMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe- Polishing Devices, of which the following is a specification.-
lln carrying out the present invention it is my purpose'to provide a shoe polishing device wherein the polishing element will be power driven so that the shoes may be polished conveniently and quickly and without the use of the usual hand cloths that are now generally used.
it is also my purpose to provide a motor driven shoe polishing device Which will embrace the desired featuresof simplicity, efficiency and durability, whch may be conveniently manipulated by the operator and wherein the component parts-will be so arranged and correlated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum.
With the above recited objects in view, and oth ers of a like nature, my invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a motor driven shoe polishing device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, the parts being shown in elevation.
Figure 3 is an end view of the same.
Figure4 is a sectional View on the line 4. i of Figure 2. a
Figure 5 'is a like view on the line 5-5 of Flgure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail 1 designates a spindle which is designed to remain stationary. Pinned or otherwise secured to one end of the spindle 1 is a hub 2 provided with an outwardly projecting circular flange 3, and riveted or otherwise secured to the flange 3 is a circular plate 4. Fixed to the other end of the spindle 1 is a handle 5 adapted to be the hand of the operator.
Arranged concentrically of the spindle 1 is a drum 6. lln the present instance one end of the drum 6 is arranged in juxtaposition to the periphery of the plate 4, and disposed concentrically of such plate, while the other end of the drum 6 is equip ed with an inwardly extending flange 7 t at grasped in surrounds the spindle l adjacent to the spindle end of the handle 5. The central portion of the flange 7 is fixed to a hub 8 ar ranged concentricallyof the spindle 1 adjacent to the handle and adapted for rotation about such spindle. Surrounding the drum 6 and appropriately secured theretois a-covering of polishing material 9 which up motion may be imparted to the casing 12 to revolve the latter. Surrounding the spindle 1 adjacent to the hub 2 is a disk 13 that is integral with the adjoining end ofthe spindle 1. This disk 13 is fastened to the plate 4 by means of screws 14 or other appropriate securing devices, so that the disk 13 will remain stationary with the plate 4 in the rotation ofthe casing 12. Arranged concentrically of the casing12 is a second casing 15 having an outer cylindrical wall and having one end wall arranged in juxtaposition to the eriphery of the disk 13 and overlying the ange 16 formed on the disk 13 and'the other end formed with an end plate 17 that surrounds the spindle 1 adjacent to the hub 8.
Arranged concentrically of the spindle 1 is a driving gear 18 that is rigidly secured to the spring casing 12 and meshes with a pinion 19 fixed to the inner end of a stub shaft 20 journaled in a bearing formed in the end of plate 17 adjacent to the outer circular wall of the casing 15. The outer end of the stub shaft carries a pinion 21 that meshes with a gear 22 fixedto the hub 8.
By means of this construction it will be seen that when the spring 11 unwinds motion will be transmitted to the casing 12, thence through the driving gear 18, pinion 19, stub shaft 20, pinion 21 and gear 22 to the hub 8, thereby rotating the drum 6 carrying the polishing material, so that the shoe engaged by the polishing material may be polished.
In order to wind the spring 11 suitable mechanism may be employed, In the pres ant instance a gear 23 surrounds the sleeve 10 and is fixed thereto and meshes with a pinion 24 fixed upon a stub shaft 25 journaled in the disk 13. The outer end of the stub shaft 25 projects through the end plate 4 and is provided with a key 26, whereby the pinion 24 and gear 23 may be operated to revolve the sleeve 10 and thereby wind up the spring 11. In order to prevent retrograde movement of the winding shaft 25, such shaft is equipped with a ratchet wheel 27 that is engaged by a spring pressed dog 28 pivoted upon the outer side of the disk 13, as clearly illustrated in Figure 4 of thwdrawings.
To hold the. drum 6 against rotation under the action of the spring 11 until it is desired to use my improved polishing device, I provide a lever 29 that is pivoted between ears 30 formed on the handle 5 adjacent to the flange 7. The flanged end of the lever 29 is formed with a holding dog 31 adapted to engage a stop member 32 formed on the flange 7, while the other end of the lever 29 is engaged by the inner end of a spring 33, the other end of which is seated in a depression formed in the handle 5 adjacent to the outer end of the latter, as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. By means of this construction it will be seen that when the handle is grasped and the lever 29 depressed against the action of the spring 33 the dog 31 will be moved out of the path of movement of the stop member 32, thereby permitting the drum 6 on the flange 7 to be revolved under the action of the main spring 11.
In the present form of my invention I have fastened to the outer side of the plate 4 a plate 34 arranged at the center of the disk, and suitably secured to this plate 34 is a rod 35'arranged in axial alinement with the spindle 1 and the outer end of this rod 35 is equipped with a dauber 36, by means of which the polishing material may be ap-- plied to the shoes.
In the present instance the polishing material 9 is carried by an open-ended cylinder 37 that surrounds the drum 6 and is frictionall held thereto. This open-ended cylinder 3; carrying the polishing material may be removed from the drum whenever it is 1necessary to replace the polishing materia From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of my improved polishing device will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, and it will be seen that I have provided a power operated polishing device wherein the spring motor may be wound up whenever necessary, and subsequently released when desired, so as to revolve the polishing element in order to bring about the polishing of the shoe.
While I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit" or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein shown and described, as modifications and variations may be made within the scope of the claim and without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
A shoe polisher including a spindle, a handle mounted on one end of the spindle, a circular plate mounted on the other end thereof, a sleeve member rotatable on the s indle and of a length less than the spind e, a tubular drum having an end wall at one end thereof formed with a spindle receiving sleeve for rotatably mounting said drum on the spindle, the other end extending over the periphery of the circular plate, a casing mounted on the circular plate within the drum, a spring housing rotatable on the sleeve member within the casing, a coiled spring in said housing having one end secured to said sleeve member and the other end to said sprim housing, gears carried by said spring housing and drum sleeve, gear ABRAHAM GOLDMAN.
