INVENTOR SHMUEL Fk/EDMHN same andthereby promoting convenience in Patented Dec. 2, 1924.
UNITED STATES SAMUELFRIEDMAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
STRETCHER FOR CASE SKINS.
Application filed April 18, 1923. Serial No. 632,979.
T all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL FRIEDMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a` resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in thecounty of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stretcher for Case Skins, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to stretchng what are known as case skins, that is to say, skins into which the stretcher elements may be inserted and then separated to stretch and enlarge the case skin. .The means generally employed for Vstretching case skins are mounted on the top of the table and the supporting base and other parts appurtenant to the stretcher offer vmore or less of an obstruction on the table and limit the clearance space above the table so thatthe Operator is required to have a considerable reach over the table for the placing and removal of the skin and for actuating the movable stretching element.
The general object of my invention is to overcome the objectionable conditions referred to and tins object I accomplish by providing a construction in which the supporting base of the stretcher is secured beneath the table and the-stretcher elements have a form to extend gttivardly, upwardly and then laterally inwafd to overlie the table. 35.:
A further objec fof vmy invention is to provide an operatno means for the movable stretcher element disposed for the main part beneath the table and having an arm projecting laterally outward to be disposed in position for the operator to lean against the the application of the pressure to the operating means.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide for foldingthe pressure arm of the operating means to an inner position when not in use so as not to oder an obstruction materially beyond the table edge.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyy* ing drawings forming a part of this speci. fication, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view showing a portion of the table equipped with my improved stretcher and operating means therefor;
' Figure 2 is an enlarged inverted plan view of the stretcher and operatlng means as applied to the table;' l
Figure 3 is a front view of said stretcher` as applied to the table;
Figure a is a transverse vertical section as indicated by the lne 4 1, Figure 3. .In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, 1 provide along the base and the other leg oftheV U extending laterally inward and overhanging the table top a proper distance above the latter,whereby to provide stretcher arms 14, on the respective elements 12, 13,. The fixed element 12 is securely bolted or otherwise suitably fastened to the .base plate. The movable stretcher element 13 is adapted to slide on two parallel guide rods` 17 supported on the base 10. i
For operating the stretcher element 18 use is made of a lever 18 disposed beneath the table top and fulcrumed at its inner end as at 19 to a corner of the base 10. A link 20 is riveted or otherwise fastened at one end as at 21 to the stretcher element 13 and at the opposite end said link is secured by a bolt 22 to the lever 18, the link being provided with a longitudinal series of bolt holes 23 for adjusting the throw of saidrelement 12. One end of the lever 18 is in the form of a pressure arm 24: pivotally mounted at the inner end as by a rivet .25.y The arm 24 when the machine is to Abe operated is swung to a position projecting laterally outward beyond the table top A but the pivot 25 permits of the arm being folded inwardly adjacent the edge of the table s0y as to offer no obstruction. ment of the army 24 to theouter position is limited by providing on the main section of the :lever and on thev said arm 24'shoulders 29 and 8O respectively. A retractile coil spring 26 is secured at one end to a lug 27 or other fixed part of the frame 1() and the other end of said spring is secured to a lug 28 or other fixed part of lever 18.
`With the described yconstruction when the arm 2d is swung to the outer position as indicated in Figures 1 and 2, the operator of The pivotal movethe stretcher may lean his body against said arm andby exerting lateral pressure on the arm swing the lever 18 on its fulcrum 19 and thereby through the link 2O moving the stretcher element 13 aivay from the element 12 thus separating the stretcher arms 14, 15 and extending orV stretching the skin that has been slipped onto said stretcher arms or juxtaposed as in Figure l. Upon the operator removing the pressure against the arm 2a the spring 26 restores the lever 18 and the stretcher elements 12, 13 to the original positions. It will be seen that when the described stretcher is emplaced on the table only the stretcher arms 14, 15 Will be disposed over the table, the remainder yof the surface of the table affording clearance for' the skin and for the movements of the operators hands and arms inthe operation of stretching. The construction results also in the stretcher arms 14, 15 being disposed close to an edge of the table instead of being emplaced laterally inward from the table edge as is usual. The nearness of the stretcher arms to the edge of the table greatly promotes convenience in the placing and removal of the skins.
I Would state in conclusion thatY While the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, 1 do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
1. A stretcher device including stretcher elements having means thereon at their lower portions in a plane to secure the same beneath a table top and including members ex tending laterally outward from their connection With said securing means, then rising from said outwardly extending portions and then directed laterally inward from the rising portions in a plane sufficiently above the securing means to lie above the table top.
2. A lstretcher of the class described adapted to be disposed adjacent to an edge of a table and comprising fixed and relatively movable stretcher elements having members to overlie the table as Well as downwardly extending members at the outer ends of the first mentioned members, and members y extending laterally inward from said downi wardly extending members in a plane to lie beneath the tabletop, and means to secure the said inwardly extending members beneath the table top; together' with actuating means for the relatively movable members positioned to lie With the securing means beneath the table top.
A stretcher of the class described adapted to be disposed adjacent to a side edge of a table and comprising fixed and relatively movable stretcher elements having members to overlie the table as Well as members adapted to extend beneath the table top, means to secure the second members beneath ythe table top, and actuating means for the movable element, said actuating means including an element operatively connected with said ino-v-y of the class described neath the table, means :to secure the secondy y mentioned members beneath the table top, and operating means connected. Vwith the said movable element beneath the table top," and having a member projecting laterallyy outward'to be disposedbeyond theltable and adapted to receive the pressure of the Y.
operator.
. 5.111 a stretcher of the class described,
stretcher elements approximately U-Vshaped, Y
one arm ofkeach U-shaped element having means adaptedV to overliea table top, and the other arm adapted to be disposed beneath the table top, and meansto move one of said ,lj-shaped elements relatively to ther other.'L Y
V6. A stretcher ofthe'V class described comprising a base plate adapted to be securedV Y to a tabletop at theunder side, a U-sha'ped stretcher element fixed to said 'base and having stretcher armsr extending Vlaterally yinward above the base to lieV above theV table top, a second U-shaped stretcher element having a'stretch'er yarm disposed adjacent to the first stretcher `arm and having a meinber slidably secured to said base, 'and means to actnate said slidable stretcher element.
7. A stretcher ofthe class described comprising a base plate adapted to be secured to a tabletop at the under side, a U-shaped stretcher element fixed to said base and having stretcher arms extending laterally linward above the base to 7lie above the table top, a second U-shaped stretcher element having a stretcher arm disposed adjacentV to the first stretcher armV and having a mem-V ber slidably secured 'to said base, and a lever connected with said movable element to ac- V tuate the same, said lever having its outer end'in the form of a pivoted pressure 'arm adapted to receive Vpressure by the operator of the stretcher.
