UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JHUE RUSSELL EAR?, OF CHATTANGOGA., TENNESSEE., .Lf-:LESSIGNORv GF ONE-HALF TO BENJAMIN SILVERMAN, OF'CHATTAEQGG, TENNESSEE.
COMB.
Application led November 7, 1923. ySeria No. $73,255.
Tf; ZZ whom` 'it may concern:
Be it known that L-JHUE B-UssnLL FARP. citizen of' the United States, residing at @hattanooga. in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to hair dressing and has special reference to a device for straightening` wavy or kinky hair.
More particularly the invention relates to :in improved hair straightening comb.
One important object of the invention is to provide a novel comb of this character having an improved general construction.
A second important object ot the invenion is to provide a novel comb for this purpose having a toothed portion provided with a back and teeth held together in an improved manner.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement of such a comb wherein the handle and tooth portions may be separated without disar ranging or displacing the teeth.
A Jfourth important object of the invention is to provide a handle and a novel reversible toothed portion having curved metallic teeth, the reversing of the tooth portion on the handle serving to change the direction of curvature of the teeth relative to the handle.
A fifth important object of the invention is to provide novel and efficient means for holding the handle on the toothed p0rtion.
V] ith the above and other objects in View as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specically claimed.
1n the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a comb constructed in accordance with this invention and having curved teeth.
Figure 2 is a view thereof partly in section and with the teeth removed.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 but having straight teeth.
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal `section through the comb shown in Figure 3. Figure 5 is end view oi Figure 1.
Figure 6 is an end view of Figure 1 with teeth reversed trom the position shown in Figure 5.
Figure is a section on the line 7-7 of Figure 3.
Figure 8 is a perspective detail of one of the straight teeth.
ln the present embodiment of the invention there is provided a handle 10 having an opening 11 therethrough. On one end of this handle is 'ferruie 12 and through the handle and ierrule extends a rod 13.
@n the projecting portion of the rod 13 is carried the comb proper which includes a back 14 oi substantially elliptical form in cross section and provided with an opening 15 through which said rod passes. At one end oi the opening there is provided an oti'set end 17 oi the rod 13 thus preventing the rotation of the back on the rod when the handle and back are assembled and the thumb nut 18, used to hold these parts in assembled relation, is screwed up.
Spaced slots 19 are :termed in the back to receive the butt portions of the teeth 2O which may either be ot the straight form shown in Figure 7 or the curved form shown in Figure 6. Through the portions of the back between the slots 2O extends a series of alined openings 21 for the reception of a tooth retaining rod 22 which passes through elongated openings 23 formed in the teeth adjacent these base portions, said base portions being provided with concave ends to fit against the bar 13. The rod 22 isiheld at one end by an overlapping portion of the end 17 and at its other end byl engagement of the ferrule 12.
lt will now be apparent that the toothed portion oi' the device can be removed from the handle as a unit and replaced after being turned end for end. Thus a comb having teeth curved to the right may be readily changed so that the teeth curve to the left.
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
laving thus described what is claimed as new, is:
l. A back having spaced slots extending the invention,
transversely thereof, teeth having their butt portions located in said slots, a tooth-retaining rod passing through the portions of the hack between said teeth and through the butt portions of the teeth, a handle, and a rod slidably passing through the back and handle and having a head engaging the end of the back remote from the handle and covering the corresponding end of the first rod, and means for securing the rod in the handle.
2. A back having spaced slots extending portions located in said slots, a tooth-retainw ing rod passing through the portions of the 15 end of the back remote from the handle and 20 covering the corresponding end of the rst rod, means for securing the rod in the han- Y die, said rod head being formed by an offset portion of the rod and the back being provided at each end with a recess to re- 25 ceive said offset portion.
ln testimony whereof l aiiix Inv signature.
