Be it known that we, 01.1.11: L. Larrnmon and Nelson A. LAFFERIOR, citizens of the United States, residing at Argyle, in the county of Marshall, tate of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Im- Jrovements in Clothes Wringers; and we, do i following to he a full, ti
iereby declare the clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same. i
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes wringers and particularly to clothes wringers used in connection with motor driven washing machines, and especially in connection with the washing machine forming the subject-matter of an application filed ctober 30, 1922, Serial Number 597,831, as a companion to this present application.
One object of the invention is to provide a wringer which is mounted on the frame of the washing machine, and which can be different positions with respect to the tub, and which has novel means for maintaining the wringer in such positions.
Another object is to provide novel and improved gearing for driving the wringer, and which gearing is readily and easily shiftable into and out of operation.
Other objects and advantages will'be ap parent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. j

Extending'betweenthe housing 17 and the bracket 14, is a vertical shaft 18, the lower end; of which entersflthe honsin 17 and is provided with a'bevelgear 19, w ich-meshes with the gear 13. Formed on the intermediate portion of the sleeve 28 is a peripherally ved collar 33,111 which is engaged the ork 34 of the arm 35, which arm extends horizontally toward the adjacent side of the frame. By reason of the pin and slot connection between the sections 18 and 18 the section 18' may be moved up and down without interfering with the rotation or the driving action thereof by the shaft 18. Mounted in the lower portion of the frame 21 is a vertically di tube 86 which has a cutaway rtion including the vertical wall 37 an the inclined wall 38. At the ends of the inclined wall 38 are formed the recesses 39 and 40, and intermediate these recesses is a neutral recess 41. Slidable through the upper and lower members of the frame 21, and passing through the tube 36, is a shaft 42, the upper end of said shaft being bent laterally, above the up er member of the frame and provided wi a hand grip 43. On the shaft 42, between the upper member of the frame 21, and the arm 35, through which arm the shaft extends and is secured, is a coil spring 44, which normally urges the shaft downwardly, so that the sleeve 28 will be moved to engage the clutch face 30 with the clutch face 32' of the gear 32. To prevent this movement until desired, there is disposed in the shaft 42 a laterally extending pin 45 wh ch is arranged to restin one o the recesses 39, 40 or 41, to hold the clutch in operative or neutral position.
When the hand-grip 1s grasped and the shaft 42 turned in one direction the p1n 45 will ride u on the inclined wall 38, with the result t hat the shaft will be elevated, carrying with it the sleeve 28, and engaging the clutch face 29 with that of the gear 31, causing the gear 31 to drive the gear 0 When the shaft 42 is turned 1n the opposite direction the pin will ride down the wall 38, and seat in the recess 40, carrying the sleeve 28 'down and engagin the clutch face Q30 with the gear 32 so t at the gear 32 w ll drive the gear 27 and turn the wringer 1n the opposite direction. When the pin 45 rests in the intermediate recess 41, the clutch faces 29 and 30 are out of enga ement with both gears 31 and 32, thus t rowing the wringer out of gear. Thus the rollers of the wringer may be driven in either direction.
Pivotally mounted on the tubular member 20 is a substantially Z-sha ed lever 46, the outer horizontal portion 0 which forms a handle, while the other horizontal portion extends through an opening 47 in the member 20, in position to engage with the longitudinal ribs 48, formed on the hub portion 49, of the shaft 18. A spring 50 is engaged between the handle portion of the lever 46 and the depending finger 51, carried by the member 20, for ur fng the lever into engagement with the ribs 48. By grasping the 27. slidable shaft lever, and depressing the same, to disenage it from the ribs 48, the frame 21 and t e wringer, may be rotated on the shaft 18, to anyl position toward and away from the tub, t at is desired, and upon release of the lever, the same will engage the ribs and maintain the said parts from swinging movement in either direction. Thus the wringer may be swung into and out of operative position with respect to the tub.
What isplaimed is:
1. The combination with a support having a shaft provided with loosely rotatable gears, and a clutch shiftable into alternate engagement with the gears, of a cam mounted on the support, a shaft slidable and rotatable within the cam and having means engaging therewith for causing sliding of the shaft upon rotation thereof, and resilient means for ur ing the slidable shaft into engagement with the cam and locking means between the cam and shaft.
2. The combination with a support, a shaft in the support, and loose gears spaced on the shaft of a cam element on the support, a clutch shiftable alternately into angaiement with the gears, a shaft slidable an rotatable in the cam element and operatively connected with said clutch, said being movable longitudinally by the cam element upon rotation of the slidable shaft, means for normally urging the slidable shaft slidably and into engagement with the cam element, and locking means between the cam and shaft.
3. The combination with a slidable clutch, of a slidable and rockable counter shaft adjacent the clutch and having operative connections therewith, a tube through which the counter shaft is slidable and rockable, one end of the tube being formed with a cam face having spaced notches, a spring for urging the counter shaft and clutch in one direction, and a pin on the counter shaft held in frictional en agement with the said cam face and operab e thereon to move the counter shaft and clutch in the o posite direction upon rocking the counter s aft.
