To all/'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT citizen of the United States, residin at Sharpsville, in the county of Mercer, tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inl Ingot Molds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention'-1'elates broadly to molding and more specially to the improvements in horizontal ingot molds.
The principal object of the present invento n is an ingot mold for casting horizontal ingots wherein a conduit comprising a runl perd' for the mold is supported by the mold Aymore specific object of the present invention is an ingot mold provided with a conduit set in the wall of the mold and adapted to direct molten metal into the mold adjacent the bottom thereof.
A further and important object of the present invention is an ingot mold of 4cast iron or the like and provided with a channel into which a iire clayl runner is adapted to be set in such manner that the walls of the moldl support the runner and with a cover having a suitable recess provided for supporting and retaining the upper end of the runner in communication with a fountain to direct molten metal in the mold.

' present invention is an ingot mold adapted vfor casting horizontal ingots and comprlsing a body portion 'having a channel yextending from the matrix of the ingot mold in such manner as to receive a suitable runt ner tile of fire clay or the like with one face of said tile beingu adapted to com rise a portion of the side wall of the nished matrix of the mold.
A still further, object of the present invention is an vingot mold for horizontal ingots comprising a body portion having channels at each end thereof with one chan vnel adapted t'o receive a suitable fire clay or the like runner and the o ther channel adapted to receive a suitable fire clay conduit or the like for the escape of' gasesfrom the mold.,
Still more specifically the present invention comprises an ingot mold for horizontal ingots or the like wherein a body Lportion of the mold! is provided on each end .with suitable channels adapted to receive fire the matrix portion of the mold adjacent the bottom thereof and comprising a runner conduit, the other conduit opening into the matrix portion adjacent the upper part thereof and comprising a gas outlet.
Other objects and advantages of the pres ent invention will be pointed out hereinafter in the specication following by reference to the accompanying 'drawings in which like characters will be used to represent like parts throughout the several figures thereof.
In view of the fact that the present invention may be embodied in constructions other than those specifically shown and de'- scribed it is to be .understood that the present disclosure is merely illustrative of one embodiment of the invention and is not to be considered in the limiting sense.

I-Ieretofore in the art' of casting 'steel ingots it has been customary to cast the ingots by either pouring the metal directly into the open mold or byv providing runners wherein the runner column is built up outside; of the mold structure and wherein the column leads under the mold body and into the matrix thereof. In molds where the metal is lpoured directly into the mold it is ditlicult to fill the mold exactl to contact with a suitable cover where it is esired to chill all of the surfaces of the ingot. As a matter offact it is substantially impossible tolcast uniform "sized full chilled lingots by pouring` into open molds. In the mold wherein an outside run ner column is provided and the metal run through the column and under the mold body, the metal is compelled to traverse a considerablelength of the conduitand there is a liability of chilling and choking the conduit or else choking the conduit to such an extent that full flow is interrupted. Furmetal attached to the ingot and these stubs must be broken before the ingot is used.
Where the outside runners are utilized the stubs are quite long thereby producing a relatively large amount of undesirable scrap and rendering the breaking olf process necessary before the ingot can be handled for transportation to the soaking pit or other handling which may be necessary. Where outside runners are utilized it is necessary to brace up the runner tiles s'uciently to insure stability of the runner during pouring,l and it also requires the forming of several angular joints by means of runner tiles. rllhe forming of joints is troublesome and requires either special tiles or special cutting of tiles to secure the right lengths and accurate fitting. Furthermore the outside runner `columns require considerably more door space than is required for the mold bodies, alone.
'lhe present invention overcomes the diculties of/the known art by providing a mold with the runner column supported directly within the mold body. ln one preferred embodiment of the present invention the mold comprises a horizontal mold section having a channel in the matrix portion of the mold which channel is of the proper size to substantially enclose the runner tile so that when the tile is in position the end wall of the matrix is substantially smooth. 'llhe invention contemplates also, a mold wherein the ends thereof are symmetric in that each end of the matrix portion is provided with a channel and with the channels being of the same size. One of the channels is adapted to receive a runner tile provided with an opening adjacent the lower end thereof and the other channel is adapted to receive a gas outlet tile with the opening adjacent the upper end of the matrix portion. The body portion preferably is provided with slightly inclined sides to provide a draught for the removal of the ingot and the body portion may be formed with an integral top or may be provided with a removable top cover through which the runner and gas outlet tiles may extend. Where thecover is utilized preferably the draught of the mold is toward the4 cover. 'llhis facilitates the mold being relieved of the mold gases which may be driven out from the steel as the steel hardens in the mold since the upwardly and outwardly inclined sides tend to prevent any overhanging portions that might tend to trap mold gases. llhe placing of runners in the mold in such manner that one side of the runner is a side wall of the ingot causes the molten steel in the mold to heat the' runner so that there is substantially no liability of the runner being chilled and vcracked by the unequal heating due to hot steel pouring through the runner. Furthermore if the runner should crack very little damage is done because any neiaeao are as closely associated with the ingot as isy possible it follows that the amount of scrap attached to the ingot is reduced to a minimum, and that this scrap .need not be broken away before the ingot can be handled.
Referring now to the drawings which disclose one embodiment of the present invention the body portion l isprovided adjacent each end thereof with channels 2 and 4f in which a -runner' tile 5 and a gas -outlet 6 are respectively set. 'llhe runner tile is provided with an opening 7 comprising a verti'cal portion and a horizontal portion leading into the matrix 8 adjacent the lower part thereof rlihe gas outlet 6 is provided with an opening 9 which enters the matrix adjacent the Vupper part thereof. The passageway in the gas outlet below the entrance to the matrix may be filled with suitable luting clay l0 or other material in order to save scrap. 'llhe side walls of the body portion of the mold are preferably slight-ly inclined as is indicated in Figures 3, 4c and 5 in order to provide draught for removing the ingot from the body portion. The ends of the body portion may be provided with crane hubs 11 or other suitable means for permitting ythe handling of the body by a suitable crane. lin the preferred form the body portion is provided with acover 12 which may be slotted at one end as at 1t to provide an opening for the runner tile and may be slotted at the other end as'at 15. to provide an opening for the gas outlet tile. A suitable fountain 16 is adapted to be set over lthe runner tile and to comprise a funnel for delivering molten steel into the runner. lit willbe noted that the cover as well as the body portion is symmetric in form and therefore it is not necessary to observe any particular relation in which these members are set so long as one is properly placed in position over the other.
The mold is adapted to be set on a suitable stool 17 at which time is is ready for pouring operations. By this construction it will be noted that all sides of the ingot are adapted to be chilled and the steel is adapted to be introduced into the mold adjacent the bottom thereof, while the gases are adapted to escape from the opposite end and adjacent the upper ortion thereof, and that the runner tile am? gas outlet are both within the body portion of the mold y so that floor space 1s conserved.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:l
1. An ingot mold comprising in combina- ',tion a body portion, a cover for-said 4body portion andprovided with a notch to receive a. runner tile, said body portion being provided' in the end( thereof with a channel adaptedl to receive a runner tile in such manner that the Walls ofthe channel support the runner tile, a runner tile in said channel said' body portion and provided WithV notches at both ends thereof, said body portion being provided in both ends with channels adapted to receive tiles in such manner that the Walls of the channels support the tiles,tiles in said channels and extending into said notches,
and the inner facings of the tiles comprise portions of the matrix wall.
3. An ingot mold comprising in combination a chill body portion, a chill cover, said body portion being provided in both' ends thereof with channels adapted .to receigve tiles in s uch manner that the Walls of the channels support the vrunner tiles-and the inner facings of the tiles comprise portions of the matrix Wall with one tile comprisinga runner conduit and the other tile comprising a gas outlet.
4. An ingot mold comprising in combination a chill body portion, a chill cover for said body portion, said body portion being provided in both ends thereof with channels adapted to receive tiles in such manner that the Walls of the channels support the tiles and the inner facing of the tiles comprise portions of the matrix Wall with one tilerncomprising a runner conduit and the other tile comprising a gas outlet and the runner opening into the lower part of the matrix and the outlet opening into the upper part of the matrix.

An ingot mold for casting steel ingots or the like comprising a body portion in the form of a shell-like member andhaving a matrix comprising sidewalls with the top and bottom thereof open, said body portion heilig provided with a channel in one end thereof and adapted to receive a runner tile provided with a-conduit in such' manner that one face of the tile comprises a portion of the matrix side wall, a. cover adapted to close the top of said body portion, said lcover having a notch in the end thereof and over said channel when the cover is in position on the body, and a bottom plate adaptl ed to close the bottom side of said body portion. An ingot mold for casting steel ingots v or the like comprising a body portion in the form of a shell-like member and having" a matrix comprising side Walls With thel top and bottom thereof open, said body portion being provided with channels in both ends thereof and adapted to receive a runner tile and a gas outlet tile each provided with a conduit in such manner that one face of each tile comprises a portion of the matrix side Wall, a cover adapted to close the top of said body portion, said cover being provided with notches to receive said tiles, said cover and said body each being symmetric as to both ends thereof, and a bottom plate adapted to close the bottom side of said body portion."
