Be it known that l, lecon ,K1Loi11n .,.a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Fleasant, in the county 'of l-lenry and State oflowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Cellar- Vtfindow Ventilator' yand Guard; and l ido dec-lare the following to bea lull, clear, and exact kdescrption oit the invention, such as wilienable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsfto make and `use the same.

My invention relates to guards `and ven tilators for windows and more particularly to one which is designed primarily for use in connection with inwardly swinging cellar windows, the invention being adaptedto guard the opening when the window is swung into saidfguard, to an open position, thus preventing the entrance oi rats or other small animals, trash, thieves, etc.

@ne object oi the invention is to provide a simply constructed and inexpensive guard ot the class defined, yet one which will be very desirable.

Another object is to provide a guard which is movable away from the window iiame and bodily carries the hinged win dow, this arrangement being very desirable when it is necessary to have the window opening exposed, :tor instance when placing coal in the cellar.

lVith the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinalter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawings.

Figure 4L is a duplicate of Fig. 8, with the exception that it shows the window swung into the guard.

In constructing the preferred forni ot my invention, I make use of a vertically disposed rectangular frame l, formed oi metal and adapted to be connected with the lrame 2 of an inwardly swinging window 3, the frame l being adapted to extend around the four sides or' the traine 2, as shown. edges aresecured to the frame 1, this cage i being of suchk shape that the window 3 may be swung inwardly` into it, as disclosed in Fig. 4. in the preferred form of construction, the window hinges 10 conneLj-,tthey` 7 dow directly with thel top barof the frame 1 and the latter is detachably ,connected with the window trame 2, permitting I Ve cage and the window to be bodily moved from the frame, when desired. One of the vertical ends oit the frame 1 is hinged at 11 to the window frame 2, and a removable pintle rod 12 is provided for the hinges, said rod being normally held against removal by a pivoted latch 13. vWhen this latch is released, however, the rod 12 may be withdrawn from the hinge knuckles and thus the adjacent end of the frame l and associated parts, are disconnected from the window trame. At the opposite end of the cage, I have shown a pair of securing bars 1li positioned horizontally, the outer ends of said bars having hooks l5 which take over one of the endmost bars 4, while the inner ends ol:` the bars 1d are provided with lateral feet 16 detachably secured by bolts and wing nuts 17, or connected by other preterred means to the frame 2. When desired, the bars 14: may be released and the entire guard cage and the window 3, may be horizontally swung away from the window frame 2, but when these parts are to be entirely disconnected from said frame 2, the latch 13 is released and the pintle rod 12 is withdrawn from the hinge knuckles.

In connection with the features above de'- scribed, l have shown a suitable window operator 18 passing through a slotted plate 19 on the upright portion of the cage, said operator having notches 2O for engagement with an endwall of the slot, or with the screen wire covering 9, to hold the window 3 Veither in an open or a closed position. This operator 18 has its inner end connected to any eye 21 secured to the window.

By providing the construction shown and described' ora substantial equivalent thereof, a window guard and ventilator is provided which will be simple andinexpensive, may be easily applied, and will be very desirable. As excellent results have been obtained from the details disclosed, these details are preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made. It will be understood that if the guard is applied to a window hinged at the bottom, the

*y guard will be putin place in an inverted position so that the window can be swung open. n The operator 18 would also be turned so that it could properly engage the eye 2l secured to the-window and latch platey of the guard.

A window ventilator and guard comprising a cage'adapted for application to kthe frame of a hinged window to guard the opening when the window is opened, said cage being open at one side'to receive the Window when the latter is openedyn'ieans infor hinging said cage at one vertical edge to the Window iframe for movement away 'from the fra-me, means flor'detachably connecting extend around the four sides of the frame o1" a hinged Window, a plurality of substantially C-shaped ymetal bars secured at their ends to: two opposed bars of said rectangular 'fra-me, and a. covering of woven wire eX- tending over said C-shaped bars and secured to the four sides of said rectangular frame to form a cage having all sides of woven wire for guarding the opening when the window is swung into said cage..

3. A structure as specied in claim 2; together with means for hinging one end bar of said rectangular .frame to the window :Ei-ame7 a. securing bar at the opposite end of the cage hooked at one end to take over one of said C-shaped bars and having alateral foot at its other end, and means for detachably securing said `foot to the window frame.
