SOLOMON EDWARD AARON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOAT-OPERATING WIN DLASS.
Application filed. September 16, 1921.
T at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON E. Aaron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat-Operating lVindlass; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to improvements in windlasses or Windlass engines for operating and controlling lifeboats on shipboard.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved device of the character indicated combining simplicity in construction and operation with both positivencss and safety of control.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
Two sheets of drawings accompany this specification, as part thereof, in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved motor driven device;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a single unit motor driven device;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of a double unit motor driven device;
Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse section taken through the drum brakes;
Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the gear shift device.
My present invention lends itself for use both as a single unit adapted to control the falls ropes from a single lifeboat, or to a double unit adapted to be located amidships to control the falls ropes from two lifeboats, one located on each side of the ship as it may be desired.
Certain essential features of my invention found in common in both the single and donble units, will be first described with reference to a single unit, while certain other features, essential only to the double unit, will be subsequently separately described.
In accordance with my invention a suitable base 1 is provided supporting standards 3 carrying bearings 3 in which is mounted a shaft 2 having fixed thereon a double falls Windlass drum 4; having a central dividing fin 5 with two brake drums 6 one located at Serial No. 501,062.
each end of the drum. Upon shaft 2 is rotatably mounted a gear 18 having a clutch hub 19 adapted to be engaged by a sliding clutch 20 operated by a clutch lever 21 which is provided with an operating handle 2e and a spring controlled latch 23 adapted to engage a fixed catch member 23. The ends of shaft 2 are preferably squared as at 25 to receive a crank 26 by means of which shaft 2 may be manually rotated as desired to rapidly regain the falls ropes.
Mounted in journals 29 carried by frame 3 above gear 18 is a transverse shaft 27 provided with a worm 28 adapted to engage gear 18 to both operate and lock the same. The ends of shaft 27 are suitably squared as at 30 to receive an operating crank 31.
Where electric motive power is available a suitable motor 40 may be mounted upon frame 3 having a gear 41 secured on its spindle, and shaft 27 is provided with a gear 32 slidable thereon but non-rotatable, except in conjunction therewith. being keyed thereto as by key 36. Gear 32 is provided with a hub 34; having an annular recess 39 adapted to be engaged by fingers 33 carried by a hand wheel 35 having an interiorly threaded bore adapted to engage threads 37 upon shaft 27. A suitable stop 38 is provided to limit the movement of the hand wheel 35 upon shaft 27.
Under each brake drum 6 is mounted a brake lever 12 pivoted as at 11, at which point also is secured a brake band 8 adapted to pass a round the drum 6 and to be secured as at lO to the lever. Turn buckles 8 are provided in each brake band to permit ad justments made necessary by changes in climatic conditions. Brake lever 12 is provided with a counterweight 13 adjustably mounted thereon at the free ends of the brake lever, of sufficient weight to normally release the tension of the brake band and is connected to control rope 15 adapted to pass over roller 16 and under roller 17 and thence to the boat.
Where the double unit winch is desired, the shaft 27 is provided with oppositely disposed worms 28, as illustrated in Figs, 3 and 6, by means of which the falls drums are each rotated in the proper direction relative to their respective boat falls. Otherwise, each winch unit is constructed identically the same, each being provided with control 1 clutches 20 by means of which either or both of the winch units may be thrown into or out of operative engagementwith gears 18 and hence worms 28.
In connection with the construction and arrangement thus described, it will be noted that the falls to each boat (not shown) when wound upon drums at are controlled both by brakes S and also by the worms 28 immeshed in gears 18. Vith clutch 2O thrown into operative engagement with the hubs 19 of gears 18 the winch is locked irrespective of brake drums 8, except as it may be operated by the rotation of shaft 27. lVith clutch 2O thrown out of engagement the falls drums will be controlled by brakes 8 operated from the boat, or upon the release of the brake control ropes 15 will be left free to rotate by reason of the release of brakes 8 by means of the counterweights 13 so that the drums 4 may be rapidly rotated by hand by means of cranks 26 to recover the falls, or if desired, clutch 20 may be thrown in, where motive power is available, and the falls rapidly recovered through the motor operating through the worm drive.
selectively operating said transverse shaft manually or by power.
2. A device as specified in claim 1 1n which the selective means for operating the transverse shaft comprises a gear feathered to said shaft, having a hub provided with an annular groove, a member threaded on the shaft and having fingers adapted to engage said groove and a hand grip whereby the gear may he moved axially of the shaft into and out of engagement with a power driven gear as desired.
In testimon whereof I affix my signature.
