Y n n All'NITJ-:m STATES 1 PATENT OFFICE.
' JAMES DAVIES, OF MAZO MANIE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF .HIS RIGHT TO DAVIDSON BELL, OF EAU CLAIRE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRIKES FOR LOCKS AND LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,359, dated May 26, 1874; applicationilcd March 23, 1874. I
tion that when the bolt of the latch strikes.
the same in closing the door, the sound which is caused by the striking of the bolt against the face-plate of the catch is avoided.
But that my invention may be fully understood, I will describe the same in detail by aid of the accompanying drawing.
Figure l represents a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a section, of a catch arranged according to my invention.
A represents the ordinary wall or frame of the catch, and B the face-plate, which is firmly secured to the wall A. Upon the outer surface ot' the face-plate B a surface of indiarubber, C, is placed, which is secured in position by means of a plate, D, which is provided with a rim or extension, D', on its under side,
which extends round three sides of the same, and incloses and retains the india-rubber surface C firmly in position. The plate D is cut away, as shown at D2 D2, in order to allow of the surface C being exposed at the front to receive the blows of the bolt when closing the door. The plate D is iirmly riveted or screwed to the faceplate B, and the surface C may be retained in position by the said rivets or screws, or by the application of an adhesive substance to its surface, which will cause it to adhere to the face-plate B, or to the plate D.
E E are holes for the passage of screws for holding the catch in position.
Fig. 3 represents a perspective view, and Fig. 4 a section, of a slight modiiication of my invention. In this case I have shown my improvements applied to a catch more particularly adapted to mortise-locks.
, In these views similar letters of reference ate employed to indicate corresponding parts to those described in reference to Figs. l and 2. It is therefore unnecessary further to describe the same here, the only diiference being that in this case the wall A is dispensed with and the face-plate B is formed with an angular extension, B1, provided with recesses or holes B2 for the reception of the lock-bolt, and the rim or extension D1 is in this case, by preference, formed on the face-plate B, in place of the plate D, as shown by Figs. l and 2.
By this arrangement it will be readily understood, by persons acquainted with the manufacture and use of locks and latches, that all noise caused b y the bolts striking the face-plate of the catch will be avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A surface of india-rubber, or other similar elastic substance, applied to the outer surface of the face-plate of the catch of a lock or latch, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the catch of a lock or latch, of a surface of india-rubber or other similar elastic substance, C, and a retainingplate, D, substantially as described.
JAMES DAVIES.
