Description

UNrrn CHARLES APPLEBY, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF HIS RIGHT TO G. HILTON SGRIBNER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER GUARD-FINGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,34 E, dated May 26, 1874; application filed March 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES APPLEBY, of Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented an Improved Harvester-Finger, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in the construction of the point and cutting-edges of one piece, attached to the finger by a tongue-and-groove joint of peculiar form.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of a harvesterfinger embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken in the line as 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken in the line y y of Fig. 1.
The finger B is made of cast-iron, with the usual groove or notch 12, for the cutter-bar to travel in. Above the groove 1) is a notch or groove, 0, of similar form, but running forward instead of backward, and having its front portion tapering or flaring outward. The piece D, which forms the point and cutting-edges of the finger, is made of steel, with a tongue, e, running backward from the point, and fitting in the groove or notch 0. The edges of the I have herein spoken of the body of the finger as of cast-iron; but I propose to render it malleable by the process commonly practiced in making malleable cast-iron.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A harvester-finger having its point and cutting-edges made of one piece, and attached to the finger by a tongue-and-groove joint, sub stantially as shown and described.
CHARLES APPLEBY.
