' CHARLES HENRY'GIVE-NS, O3? MODESTO, CAL-IFO3NIA.-
Application filed. .Tu'ly (5,
To aZZ whomit may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. GIvnNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Modesto, in the county of Stanislaus and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jacks, of whiohthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel form of jack, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby the ack can be raised and lowered by a. hand lever without manipulating a dog or clutch which is liable to cause injury to the operator.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the jack can be caused to drop without being lowered by a step by step movement and also to provide means for lowering it by a step by step movement.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 2- Figure 1 is a front view of the device.
Figure 2 is a side view thereof.
Figure 3 is a rear view.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 5 is a section on line 55 of Fig ure 4. s
Figure 6 is a section on line 66 of Figure 4.
In these views 1 indicates a frame which is provided with the platforms 2 and 3. At one of the rear sides the frame is provided with a rack 4. A bar 5 is slidably mounted in holes formed in the two platforms. the bottom of the bar having a foot 6 connected therewith and the top of the bar having a rest 7 swiveled thereto. A vertical slot 8 is formed in the bar and a rack 9 is placed in said slot. A slide 10 is slidably mounted on the bar and is located between the two platforms. A yoke 11 is pivoted to the slide and a catch 12 is pivoted to the yoke in such a manner that it will engage the rack 9 to hold the rack in adjusted position. A hand lever 13 has its forked end pivoted to the lower part of the slide and a flange 14 is formed on the front part of the lower plat- 1923. Serial n mesis.
form. for forming a fulcrum for the hand lever. I
When using the device the hand lever is pushed downwardly. so that it will rock on its fulcrum and thus raise the slide which will also cause the bar to raise as the slide is connected with: the ,barbyi the catcln The hand lever is then moved to the right so as to place the foot 6 in engagement with. one
hand lever is then raised again to raise the parts another step and at the end of its movement the hand lever 1s swung to the right again to place the foot in engagement with another notch. This action is kept up until the bar has been raised to a sufficient amount. If'the load is to be dropped without a step by step movement the hand lever is lowered a little and at the same time is swung to the left so as to release the foot from the rack 4., Then the hand lever is raised until it strikes the trigger or catch 12 to release the same by swinging the yoke 11 andsaid catch upwardly and this will permit the bar and the load carried thereby to drop. If a gradual downward movement is desired the hand lever is raised slightly and at the same moved a slight distance to the left. The hand lever is then moved a sufficient distance to place the foot'6 over a notch of the rack 4 and then the hand lever is lifted until it strikes the catch hard enough to release the same so that the foot on the bar can drop into the notch of rack 4. This action is repeated until the parts are in lowered position.
Fromtheforegoing it will be seen that it is not necessary to move a dog or catch which is liable to injure the fingers as all the movements are .made with the. hand lever.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
.I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided thatsuch changes fall. within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A jack of the class described comprising a frame having'a rack bar at its lower part, a bar slidably mounted in the frame,
a foot on the bar engaging the rack bar a slide on the 2;, catch on the slide; rack baion' the bat-'1 with whichthe'ditch ngages and a hand lever pivoted totheelide and. having a part for engaging the catch.
2. A jack of the class described comprising a frame, including an upper and lower platform having openin e therein, a rack bar onthe lower part (I "the frfi'iiie, a rod pas ing t r ugh he Open g in the Pla fornis, 'aTfoot'on the lowerend of the iod for engegingthe rack bar, a slide on the rod.
