C. R. BOWERS ROLLING TOOL AND HOLDING DEVICE Filed March 6, 1923 INVENTOR. Chf/7m 5 E. Bon/fles.

UNITED Y STATES GHABLES B. BOWERS, OF FRANKFOBT, INDIANA.
ROLLING TOOL AND HOLDING DEVICE.
Application filed March 8, 1923. Serial No. 623,079.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. Bownns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Frankfort, county of Clinton, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Rolling Tool and Holding Device;
Y and I do hereby declare that the followinfr is a full, clear, and eixact description thereo reference being had to the accompanylng drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a repair tool for attaching a connecting key to a shaft by the usual beading or rolling operation.
The main object of the invention is to provide a small hand-operated devlce for rolling the periphery of the metal connecting key and forcing it into an annular groove in the shaft to which 1t 1s to be secured, the device being small and simple in construction so as to be available to the small garage and machine shop.' D
One feature of the invention resides 1n the method of supporting the attaching key and shaft in position to be operated upon; and another feature thereof resides in the meansfor adjustably clamping and securing the same in a suitable vise or holder so as to permit the key to be rolled at a given distance from its end.
Still another feature of the invention'resides in the beading tool and its construction, whereby the engaging rollers thereof will roll the bead upon the rotation of the tool, the pressure applied thereby being neutralized by the relative positions of the rollers.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view looking down on the tool and holder therefor, with the shaft removed. F ig. 2 is a side elevation showing the tool applied to* the shaft in operative position. F ig. 3 is a central vertical section through the shaft, and a portion of the holder and tool.
In the drawings there is shown a holding socket 10 which is annular and cup-shaped mounted upon the base 11. On the opposite end of the base 11, there is another holder A12 of suitable diameter for supporting and securing the movable pinion mounted on the shaft, which, however, does not form a part of this invention. Secured within the socket or holder 11, and loosely mounted therein, there is a receiving member 13 provided with a central bore or recess for receiving the bifurcated or key end of the connecting key 14. Rigidly secured in the body ofthe member 13, there is an upwardly extending pin 15 positioned to extend between'the bifurcated ends of the key 14 for preventing its turning therein. For locking the member 13 rigidly in the socket 10, there is a set screw 16.
The shaft 17 which is hollow and provided with external screw threads upon which the pinion 18 isv mounted, is provided with a head or enlarged portion 19 which is formed integral therewith. Said head 19 is provided with a reduced portion 20 in which is formed an annular groove 21 to receive the bead 22 which may be rolled therein by the tool hereinafter to be described. Rigidly secured at the opposite end ol the shaft from the head 19, there is a collar 23, all of which construction forms appart of a starter shaft for starting an internal combustion engine through the medium of an electric motor in the usual manner. For adj ustably clamping the shaft in position, there is provided a rod 24 having a head 25 keyed to one end thereof', said head being provided with the wings 26 for enabling it to be readily grasped and turned. Said shaft is adapted to extend through the hollow shaft 17 in the collar 19 and is provided with screw threads on the opposite end adapted to screw through an internally threaded central opening in the member 13, whereby the end thereof will engage the bottomof the socket 10. Mounted adjacent the head 25, there is a wing nut 38 arranged to screw about the upper threaded portion of the rod and contact with the top of the collar 23. For mounting the shaft and connecting key in position to be operated upon and properly adjusting the. same, the key 14 may be first mounted in position within the member 13 so that it is engaged by the pin 15 and the shaft may then be mounted thereon so that the reduced portion 2O of the collar 19 extends into the surrounding shell of the connecting key 14. The rod 24 is then inserted through the shaft andA screwed through the member 13 until it engages the bottom of the socket 10, so that further turning thereof will cause the socket 13 to rise until it lifts the key 14 and shaft to lll) the desired elevation. 'llhe set screw 16 may then be screwed tightly against the member 13 for securely locking the same, and the wing nut 38 may be screwed down on the rod 24 so as to rigidly clamp said shaft and key 14to the member 13. It will be observed, therefore, that after the proper adjustment is made, the parts to b e operated upon are rmly held in fixed position within the socket 10.
Before the parts are assembled and secured in place, as above described, the tool should be placed in position resting on the top of the socket 10, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Said tool comprises a body portion 27 having an annular opening 28 of substantially the same diameter as the interior of the socket 10, and is milled out for providing a laterally extending opening 29 in which the rollers 30 may e rotatably mounted. Extending from one end of the body portion 27, there is a handle 31; and from the other end thereof, there is Ia longitudinally extending recess in which thel block 32 is slidably mounted, said block having a biturcated end in which the roller 33 is rotatably mounted. rlhe adjusting screw bolt 34 is adapted to be screwed in the end o the tool, so that its inner end abuts the end of the block 32' for forcing it inwardly. y
The screw bolt 34 is provided with a longitudinally extending handle 35 having in the end thereof a cross rod 36 for turning the same and forcing the roller 33 inwardly under pressure.
In operating the tool, assuming that it has been placed upon the socket 1() and the connecting key 14 and shaft 17 secured in position throu h the opening 28 therein, as above descri ed, the handle 35 is turned by the rod 36 until the rollers 30 and 33 are forced about the periphery of the key 14 at three points under pressure. The position of the key 14 will have been previousl adjusted by operating the rod 24 vertlcally until the annular Groove 21 about the reduced portion 20 of the collar 19 is directly opposite the beadin flan e 37 of said rollers. After the ro 1ers ave been forced under pressure against the key 14, the handles 31 and 35 of the tool may be grasped and the tool turned slowly about the key so that the beading langes 37 will force the metal of the key 14 into the groove 21 about the entire circumference thereof.
The beading operation will thus be performed without removing the pinion 18, collar 23 or associated parts from the shaft 17, and the pressure applied by the rollers will be entirely sustained by the shaft or collar so that said shaft will not be, even in the slightest degree, bent out of alignment.
The invention claimed is:
l. In a device for attaching a member to a hollow shaft, the combinationof a holding means for securin said shaft and attachment together, inc uding a rod adapted to extend t rough said shaft and attachment, .clampin members adapted to screw on the ends o said rod for clamping said shaft and attachment together, a mounting 4into which said rod and the clamping member on one end thereof are adapted to extend, means for locking said rod in said mounting, andv a tool supported on said mounting and adapted to surround said rod so as to engage about said shaft and attachtiti ment therefor for rolling an attachment ,l
bead thereabout when rotated with respect to said mounting. p f' 2. In a device for attaching a member to a hollow shaft, thel combination of a means for holding said shaft and attachment in position withrespect to each other includin a rod adapted to extend'through said ho low shaft and attachment, a clamping nut adapted to screw on one end of said rod, a recessed member through which the other end of said rod is adapted to screw, a mounting for receivingv said member against which the end of said rod may abut, a pin in said member extending into said attachment for preventing the rotation thereof, means t r locking said member and mounting rigid y together in adjustable position, and a tool rotatably supported on said mounting in position to surround said attachment and shaft for rolling an attaching bead thereabout at a given position lixed by the adjustment ont said member.
ln witness whereof, ll have hereunto alixed my signature.
CHARLES lt. W ERS.
