Description

C. D. SYMMS SPARK PLUG CASE Filed June 117 1921 Fay-1 l IA/l 'l l l Evier/WEL Cfl Patented Get. 21, 1924.
` islas? SPARK-PLUG- CASE.
Application filed. .Tune 11, 1921.. Serial No. 476,643.
To all whom t may conce/Mt.'
Be it'known that I, CHARLES I). SYMMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux Falls, in the county of Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in vSpark-Plug Cases, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to spark plug cases and has for one of its objects the provision of a simple and efcient device of this character adapted to hold spark plugs in a manner to prevent their accidentalginjury, even if the case is put in a tool-box with tools, or thrown loosely in a portion of a vehicle, or the like;
A further object is the provision of a spark plug case of substantially rigid material having a resilientclainping member within the casing for holding the spark plug against movement.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
An embodiment of my invention is "illus trated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specication, and in which- Fig. l is a side view of a casing embodying my invention and showing a portion vbroken away to expose underlying parts;
Fig, 2 is a section taken on'line2-2 Vof Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section of the case taken on line 33 o-f Fig. land showing a spark plug thereinin elevation; and h Fig. 4c is a view, in perspective, of a clamping jaw used in the construction.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, I have indicated a housing made up of a box 5 and a cover 6 telescoped over the box. It will be apparent that the housing may be arranged in any desirable manner and of a size to accommodate dierent numbers of spark plugs than that illustrated. I have indicated the housing formed to accommodate four spark plugs as an example. The box and cover may be formed of sheet metal, such as commercial tin plate, or any other desirable substance.
Within the box 5 I have indicated two clamping jaws 7 which are substantially alike. These jaws 7 may be formed of the same material as the box and cover or a material having more resiliency, when desired. The clamping jaws 7 are preferably loosely mounted in the box 5 and of such shape that they will be held in position by friction and their resiliency.
In the form shown each of the jaws 7 has substantially semi-cylindrical portions 8, `and these semi-cylindrical portions 8 joined by somewhat acute angular portions 9. These parts 8 and 9 are preferably formed so that when the jaws are inserted in the box the distance between the middles of the parts 8 will be slightly more than the distance between two points 9 so that the portion l0 of the spark plug will tend to straighten out the parts'S and thereby frictionally lock the vplugs in position in the box. v`When the cover 6 is removed this' frictional contact between the plugs and the jaws 7 will hold the plugs in the box, even though the latter is inverted or laid down.
The height lof the jaws 7 is preferably, such that their upper edges will engage against some part of the plugs, such as shoulders 11, and prevent movement of theV plug downwardly, thereby holding the electrodes 12 in such positions that they cannot engage the bottom o-f the box or the "i jaws 7. This insures keeping the plugsin perfect condition. The upper end 13 of the plug is adapted to be engaged by the.
inner wall of theftop ofthe cover so as `tohold the plug tightly against the top of the clamp 7, thereby holding the plugs against longitudinal movements in the box. It will be apparent that the coverin its condition shown in Fig. l will accommodate spark plugs of different lengths by telescoping ing said plug in position with one end therev 1i"- of free from contact with said housing.
3. A spark plug case comprising a housing having a strip of resilient sheet material therein bent to form aws for engaging opposite sides of a spark plug, said strip being free from fixed attachment to said housing to permit said jaws to conform in position to plugs within said case and to resiliently grip said plugs.
l. A spark plug case comprising a -housing having sheet metal positioning means therein for retaining spark plugs in place in said housing, said positioning means comprising strips of sheet material bent to form arcs, the strips being arranged adjacent one another with their arcs incomplementary position to provide a series of substantially circular openings with the strips arranged one on each side of said openings.
5. A spark plug case comprising a housing and a pair of positioning strips arranger within said housing and free from fixed at-V tachment therewith, said strips being bent to form a series o-f arcs and being positioned within said housing so that the arcs of one strip register with the arcs of anotherl strip and constitute substantially cylindrical sockets for receiving plugs. l
6. A spark plug case comprising a housing and clamping means within said hous ing, said means comprising a pair of resilient strips of sheet metal bent to form a series of arcs, said strips being arranged ,ad jacent oneV another with the arcs thereof registering to provide substantially cylindrical sockets so that the adjacent portions of the strips constitute spring jaws for clamping opposite portions of plugs within said sockets while the edges of said strips provide shoulders for sustaining the plugs with one end thereof spaced from the wall of said housing.
7 A spark plug case comprising telescoping sections, clamping strips within one of said sections, said strips being bent to provide registering portions forming sockets for receiving the ends of spark plugs, the edges of said strips providing shoulders for supporting the ends of the plugs within said` sockets in spaced relation to the bottom of said sockets while the other telescoping member is free to engage the opposite endsl of said spark plugs. e
8. A spark plug case comprising a housing, a pair of strips of resilient sheet material disposed adjacent one another within said housing to provide frictional gripping members, said strips being bent to form registering gripping jaws for entering the space between plugs in said housing from opposite sides, the space between adjacent jaws of a single strip being normally less than the greatest distance from one of said strips to the other across said housin to cause said jaws to resiliently engage sait plugs Vto retain them in position in said housing.
9. A spark plug case comprising a pair of telescoping box sections forming a relatively thin elongated housing, and a pair of strips of resilient sheet material disposed in one of said sections and bent to provide registering portions forming a series of sockets for receiving spark plugs, said strips being free from fixed attachment with said housing to permit uthe side walls of said sockets to resiliently accommodate themselves on plugs inserted in said sockets so that said walls will grip said plugs, the adjacent strips forming opposite portions of said sockets while the edges of said strips provide shoulders for restricting the movement of the plugs into said sockets to maintain the inner ends of said plugs free from contact with the bottoms of said sockets while the opposite ends of said plugs are free to engage the wall ofthe otherv telescoping member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification on this'th day of June, A. D. 1921.
