- This invention relates to woodworking machines and particularly tomachines of this class designed for the purpose of reproducing in a workpiece a predetermined contour from a sample or model and particularly in the reproduction of molding strips, finishing strips and the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a machine o-f the class and for the purpose specified with means whereby one or more grooves or impressions may be cut in a workpiece to co-rrespond with a prede-- termined pattern or model; a further object being to provide means for varying the size of the cut in the workpiece to produce a smaller or larger reproduction of the sample or model employed; a further object being to provide means for varying the depth of the cut in the workpiece; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a machine of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and operation and eiiicient in use and which is constructed and operated as hereinafter described and claimed.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM POTTER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woodworking Machines, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to woodworking machines and particularly tomachines of this class designed for the purpose of reproducing in a workpiece a predetermined contour from a sample or model and particularly in the reproduction of molding strips, finishing strips and the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a machine o-f the class and for the purpose specified with means whereby one or more grooves or impressions may be cut in a workpiece to co-rrespond with a prede-- termined pattern or model; a further object being to provide means for varying the size of the cut in the workpiece to produce a smaller or larger reproduction of the sample or model employed; a further object being to provide means for varying the depth of the cut in the workpiece; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a machine of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and operation and eiiicient in use and which is constructed and operated as hereinafter described and claimed.

In practice, l provide a suitable frame structure 10 composed, in the construction shown, of metal tub-ing or rods joined by elbows and other' couplings, said frame being oblong and approximately rectangular in form, comprising four corner standards 11 joined by four front and back longitudinal members 12, and by transverse side members 13, the frame being provided with depending leg members 14 and the standards 11 at the back of the frame being provided with extensions 15 joined by a longitudinal rail 16. Mounted in connection with the rail 16 adjacent to the end rails 13 of the frame are forwardly directed tubular frame members 17 which are free to oscillate or *swing and similar frame members 18 are movably connectedwith a longitudinal rail 19 mounted between the rear standards V11 approximately centrally between the horizontal rear rails 12 as` clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing. The end rails 13 at the top of the frame are reinforced by rods 20 which are lconnected therewith and with the extensions 15 and the rear standards 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
Mounted upon the top of the bottom rails 12 and 13 of the frame is a suitable supporting table 21 and a platform 22 is mounted to move forwardly and backwardly on the table 21, and is keyed in this operation by a key bar 23 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. A similar table 24 is mounted upon the top rails 12 and 13, and a platform 25 is movably mounted on said table, and is keyed thereto by a key bar 25a also shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
Threaded pins 26 are connected with forwardly directed members 18 and extend downwardly through the table member 21, and mounted thereon are springs 27 which normally serve to support the members18 to hold them in a slightly raised position and similar pins 26 and springs 27 are mounted in connection with the members 17 and cooperate with the table 24 for the same purpose.

The gage members 51 are, in the construction shown, in the form of disks rotatably adjustable on the members -18 and pro vided with aplurality of radially extending gage devices 52 of different forms and constructions, as for example, these gage devices may be V-shaped in form in cross ksection or arc-shaped in form, or of any other desired shape, and said gage devices are adjustable in the members 51 to regulate the angular position thereof, whenever desired.
The platform is provided at its Yfront end with .a work-piece supporting table or member 53, the inner end of which is provided with a longitudinal 11p-standing shoulder 54 against which a suitable workpiece 55 may be placed, and said ange is preferablyprovided with prongs 56 adapted to enter the workpiece or the edge thereof,-and adjusting clamp Arods 57 are imbedded in the table 53 and provided with hook ends 58 adapted to engage the outer edge of the workpiece 55 and are held iu position by thumb nutsv 59, as clearly shown in Fig-5 of the drawing. f
Two of the clamp rods 57 areemployed in the construction shown, but it will be imderstood that -any number of such devices maybe employed.
Mounted in connection with the front. .ends of the members 17 is a rail attaching plate 60 which is of suicient size to form a substantial and rigid support'and is providedV with bosses61 into which the members '17 are passed and secured, and the plate 60 is provided at one end portion thereof and in the top and bottom edges thereof with recesses 62 and 63, and the other end of the plate is beveled and provided with a recess 64, whereby a plane guide rail 65 may be detachably mounted in connection with the plate 60, said rail 'being provided with screws 66 which are adapted to ent-er the recesses 62 and 63 and with a screw 67, the shank of which is cutout as shown at 68 operating in connection with the recess 64 and by means of this construction the rail 65 may be attached and detached to the plate 60 whenever desired.
I also provide a suitable plane 69 which is adapted to be detachably connected with the guide rail `65 and being supported and guided thereon by a channel-,shaped member 70 secured to one side faceof the stock of the `plane v69, as clearly shown .in Fig. `5 of the drawing, and the plane 69 is provided with a suit-able handle member 71 by means of which the same may be moved forwardly and backwardly over the rail 65, and the plane employed or the stock or body thereof.
1s comparatively thin and a triangular or V-shaped cutter blade 72 is preferably employed whereby a substantially pointed blade is provided thus facilitating the cutting of very line grooves or recesses in a workpiece. Beyond the specific characteristics of the plane herein set out, l am not limited to any specific structure of the plane nor am l necessarily limited to any specific form of cutter blade, and any type of plane suitable for accomplishing the desired result may be employed.
Pivotally mounted in connection with the members 18 are uuwardly directed tubes 73, and threaded rods 74 are adjustably connected with the members 17, said members being provided with spaced apertures 7 5 to accomplish this result, and the threaded rods 74 are adapted to telescope with the tubes 73 and are adjustable therein and retained in different positions of adjustment by single-winged nuts 76 and double-winged lock nuts 77. The parts 73 and 74 are adapted to limit the movement of the members 17 toward or in the direction of the members 1S, and when in the position shown in the drawing they serve to link the members 17 and 18 together whereby when the members 18 drop a predetermined distance the members 17 will drop a corresponding distance, but by moving the threaded rods 74 forwardly or backwardly on the members 17, the ratio of movement may be decreased or increased as will be apparent, in other words, the depth ofthe cut in the workpiece may be greater or less than the depth of the cut in the samples or models 47 employed.
The operation of my improved machine will be readily understood from the foregoing description vwhen taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement.
It will be understood that the forwardly projecting members 17 and 13 which are movable upon the rails 16 and 19 cooperate with each other through the parts 73 and 74, and when the plane 69 is mounted upon the rail 65, the tool thereof is approximately in the same vertical line as the gage devices 52 on the members 51, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, and by rotating the crank 37 and moving the plane 69 forwardly and backwardly on the rail and over the workpiece 55, the contour of the sample or model 49 will be cut in the workpiece 55 as the screw shaft 30 is rotated in both directions. c
At the beginning of the operation of cutting or fashioning the workpiece and in order to rough out said workpiece, the jaw members 32 may be moved into the position shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing to permit of the free sliding or inward and outward movement of the shaft 30 to correspondingly move bot-h of the platforms 22 and 25, and when the finished cut is desired, the jaw members 32 are moved into operative position whereby a fine adjustment of the platforms 22 and 25 may be obtained.
As hereinbefore set out by adjusting the screw shaft 33 at any time during the above operation the relative positions of the platforms 22 and 25 one with the other may be changed, whereby the contour of the sample or model 49 may be increased or decreased in its production in the workpiece, whenever desired, it being understood that the shaft 33 must be operated while the plane 69 is in operation and intermittently of the feeding or movement of the separate platforms by the shaft 30. The springs 27 normally serve to support the members 17 and 18 to permit of their free operation and the depression of the members 17 in the operation of the plane will correspondingly depress the members 13 and the parts mounted in connection i therewith, this operation being accomplished tl'nfough the tubes 73 and threaded rods 74.
lt will be understood that in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, l have shown a very small workpiece as illust-rating the method of carrying my invention into edect but, in practice, workpieces of any length may be employed and may be mounted longitudinally of the platform, of the machine, or may be mounted transversely thereof, and l am alsol not necessarily limited to use of the parts 18, 51 and 52, or the use of the samples or models 49. ln other words, the machine may be used for cutting original molding strips or working wood of any form and description, and particularly to the cutting of grooves therein, and while l have shown a frame of specific construction as well as other details of construction for carrying my invent-ion into effect, it will be understood that l am not necessarily limited to the details of construction herein shown and described, nor to the operation of various parts of the apparatus herein set out, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing 'from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
In the foregoing reference to the forward and backward mounting of a workpiece on the machine or the transverse mounting of a workpiece thereon, the ma.- chine is operated to form transverse grooves in an elongated workpiece in what is known as dado work. ln this use of the machine, it will be apparent that the .workpieceis moved forwardly and backwardly of the machine in the same manner as in the for`- mation of grooves in a workpiece in forming moldings on a workpiece mounted longitudinally of the machine, but in the first termned pattern or patterns may be identically reproduced in a Aworkpiece by rotating the shaft .30 by means of the crankB? to-feed theworkpiece supporting table transversely ofthe plane mounted on the plane supporting means and by manipulating` the plane rlongitudinally of the workpiece or of the machine",r and the direction in' which the shaft .30 is rotated will govern the movement of the workpiece, and in this operation the shaft is rotated in both directions to move the workpiece back rand forth under the plane a number of times until the finished productA is'produced. i It willalso be apparent that Irma'y-increase or decrease the size of a cut such as a. groove or the like in a workpiece'in comparison with the size of ltheV cor-responding portion of the patterns orsamples employed, and in this operation the screw shaft 38 isjintermittently ladjusted or, rotated by theoperator while also rotating the shaft 30 to fashion the workpiece in order to vary the relation between the workpiece supportingmember and the gage membersl; as for example, in a one inch travel of the gage members 51 over a predetermined pattern, the workpiece supporting table may move a half-inch or two'inclies or at any other ratio as vmaybe desired.

A machine of the class described comprising a suitable workpiece supporting member, means extending longitudinally of said member for supporting a plane thereover and for guiding said plane in its movement, the means for supporting said piane being movable toward and from said member, means for moving said member transversely of the plane supporting means and of the longitudinal movement of said plane, a model supporting member in operative connection with said workpiece supporting member, and the means for operating the same, means cooperating with said last named member or a modell or models mounted thereon for controlling and regulating the movement of the plane supporting means toward and from said workpiece supporting member, and means for controlling the ratio of movement between said last named means and the plane supporting means.

A machine of the class described comprising `a suitable workpiece supporting member, means extending longitudinally of said member for supporting a plane thereover and for guiding said plane in its movement, the means for supporting said Vplane being movable toward and from said meinber, means for moving said member transversely of the plane supporting means and of the longitudinal movement of said plane, a model supporting member in operative Vconnection with said 'workpiece supporting named member or a model or models mounted thereon kfork controlling and regulating the movement of the plane supporting means toward and from said workpiece supporting member, means for controlling the ratio of movement between said last named means and the yplane supporting means, and tensional means for normally supporting both of said last named means.

A machine of the class described comprising a suitable workpiece supporting member, means extending longitudinally of said member for supporting a plane thereover and for guiding said plane in its movement, the means for supporting said plane being movable toward and from said member, means for moving said member transversely of the plane supporting .means and of the longitudinal. movement of said plane, a model supporting member in operative connection with said workpiece supporting member, and the means for operating` the same, means cooperating` with said last named member or a model or models mounted thereon for controlling and regulating the movement of the plane supporting means toward and from said workpiece supporting member, means for controlling the ratio of movement between said last named means and the plane supporting means, tensional means for normal f supporting both of said last named means, and means for moving the workpiece supporting member independent of the model supporting member.

A machine of the class described comprising a suitable frame, a workpiece supporting member mounted in the frame, a model supporting member mounted in said frame below said workpiece supporting member, means for moving said members forwardly and backwardly of the machine, a plane supporting member mounted in the frame above the workpiece supporting member and movable toward and from the same, gage devices cooperating with said plane supporting member and the model supporting member for controlling the movement of said plane supporting member toward and from said workpiece supporting member.

A machine of the class described comprising a suitable frame, a workpiece supporting member mounted in the frame, a model supporting member mounted in said frame below said workpiece supporting member, means for moving said members forwardly and backwardly of the machine, a plane supporting member mounted in the frame above the workpiece supporting member and movable toward and from the same, gage devices cooperating with said plane supporting member and the model supporting member for controlling the movement of said plane supporting member toward and from said workpiece supporting member, and said plane supporting member eX- tending longitudinally of the workpiece supporting member and transversely of the movement thereof, whereby a plane mounted thereon may be moved longitudinally of a workpiece support on said member.

A machine of the class described comprising a suitable frame, a workpiece supporting member mounted in the frame, a model supporting member mounted in said frame below said workpiece supporting member, means for moving said members forwardly and backwardly of the machine, a plane supporting member mounted in the frame above the workpiece supporting member and movable toward and from the same, gage devices cooperating with said plane supporting member vand themodel supporting member for controlling the movement of said plane supporting member toward and from said workpiece supporting member, and said plane supporting member eX- tending longitudinally of the workpiece supporting member and transversely of the movement thereof, whereby a plane mounted thereon may be moved longitudinally of a workpiece support on said member, and said gage devices being provided with adjustable heads.
