FRICTION DEVICE FOR SHUTTLES.
Application filed December 15, 1923. Serial No. 680,934.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN C. SHAMBOW, a citizen of the United. States, residing at /Voonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Friction Device for Shuttles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a friction device for shuttles, and the primary object thereof is to provide an improved and simplified form of friction device. which not only tensions the thread, but which guides same into the shuttle eye and also prevents unthreading, the combined enumerated features being embodied in a single structure.
Av further object of the invention is to provide a device of this type which can be made in a stamping and bending operation and wherein the textile fabric tensioning member can be easily and quickly positioned.
Further objects will be later set forth and manifested.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a top plan view of the invention; V
Figure 2, is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3, is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a member of generally in verted U-shape is employed having a rear side 1 and a front side 2, the two sides being spaced.
The lower end of the rear side is turned outwardly at an angle to form a foot 3 and perforated to receive a securing screw 4 by means of which the device is secured in the throat of the shuttle. The rear side is further formed with a diagonal slot 5, which latter extends diagonally through the top of the rear side and terminates above the bottom of the rear side, the lower end of the slot being curved inwardly at 6 and entering into the center of a side of a substantially elliptical eye 7. The resultant metal portion provides a guard finger 8 which latter is bent outwardly from the rear face of the rear side. The finger is preferably made thin as compared with the thickness of the metal forming the remainder of the device.
The.
front side of the device is formed with a vertical slot 9 leading at its upper end into the upper end of the slot 5, while its lower end extends through the bottom of the front side 1. A piece of felt 12 or other suitable friction material is interposed between the front and rear sides 1 and 2 and is clamped in position by forcing the front and rear sides towards each other so as to frictionally grip the material. The felt is slotted or cut as indicated at 10.
In operation, the thread from the bobbin is placed in the usual slot 3 leading to the delivery eye E. The thread is then moved downwardly in the slots 5 and 9 and in the slot 10 of the felt and beneath the guard finger 8 and is then moved horizontally to enter the delivery eye.
The entire device may be stamped out of metal and then bent or doubled into form.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a friction device for shuttles, a substantially inverted U-shaped member the free lower end of one side of which is turned at an angle to provide a supporting foot, one side of the member having a downwardly inclined slot extending through the top of the member and into a side of an elliptical opening formed in said side to provide a threading slot and eye and a guard finger, the free end of the finger being turned out wardly, the opposite side of the member having a vertical slot leading into the diagonal slot, and friction material clamped by and between the sides and having a cut registering with the slots and eye.
2. In a friction device for shuttles, an inverted U-shaped member having its two sides and top slotted, one of the slots leading into an eye, a finger guarding the eye, and a friction member clamped between the sides and having a slit in register with. the slots and leading into the eye.
3. In a friction device for shuttles, a metal member bent into inverted U-form and having thread slots and an eye into which one of the slots leads, the eye and last named slot forming a guard finger, and friction material clamped between the legs of the U-member and slitted to receive the thread.
4. In a friction device for shuttles, a metal In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
