EDWARD I4. ANDERSON, 0F ATTLEBORO,
MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOB TO R. 86 G.
COMPANY, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUTTON.
Application filed March 20, 1924. Serial No. 700522.
T 0 all whom it mayooncem Be it known that I, EDWARD L. ANDE'RsON, a citizen'of the United States, residing at A-ttl-eboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improven'ients in buttons, and the primary object of same 1s to provide improved means for positively latchlng the male and the female members of a button together and for permit-ting unl-atching thereof, only upon the operation of means for rendering't'he latching means inoperative.
A further object of the invention is to provide meansfor latching the members which is of simple, compact'and economical construction, which does not detract from the customary appearance of the button, which occupies minimum space and which is inconspicuous.
The invention has still further and other objects, which will be later herein set forth and of themselves manifested in the course of the following description. 9
In the drawings:
Figlne 1, is an elevation, partly broken away and in section,
Figure 2, is a section on llne 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3, is a section on line 33 of Fig ure 1.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a female member 1s employed which is of hollow form having heads l and. 1 connected by a shank 1 which has a contracted central portion from which it flares outwardly on each side toward the beads. A pair of substantially semi-circular elongated jaws are disposed within the interior of the female member and have reduced peripheral parts 2 cen tral of their lengths and in whlch the contracted central portion of the shank 1 projects so as to provide pivots for the jaws, enabling same to rock to and fro at each end thereof. The outer ends of the jaws are inturned or provided with suitable abutments 2", while their inner ends, are bulged at 2 to conformably engage over and grip the head 8 of the male member of the fastening. i
For the purpose of holding the aws 1n position to grip the head 8, and to also release same, a reciprocating member 3, is employed, and which is of somewhat pin form. The member 8 has a tapered part i, the base of which engages the inturned ends 2" of the jaavs and forces the said ends outwardly and thereby the ends 2 inwardly to grip head 8. The pin extends axially of the female member and the head thereof extends throughv the head or finished top 1 of the button and is provided with a cap 5, the latter flanged at 6 and engaging top 1 to restrict outward movement of the pm.
For the purpose of tensioning the pin, a spring of open flat formation is employed and which has a rim 1O clamped between the top 1 and the adjacent end of the shank 1 and a pair of spaced arms 11 which eX- tend into the center of the spring and receive the tapered part 9 of the pin therebetween. The arms 11 of the spring abut the shoulders 12 formed by the tapered portion 9 of the pin and urge the pin outwardly, thereby causing the jaws to normally 0ccupy latching position. Upon inward pres sure being applied to thecap 5 and thereby to the pin, the latter will move inwardly, bringing the narrow part of its tapered end 9 opposite to the parts 2 of the jaws, permitting the latter to approach and the ends 2 of the jaw to recede, releasing the head 8.
By making the pin of sufficient length, same will, upon inward movement not only release the jaws, but expel the ball head of the male member out of the female member.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.111 a button, a male member having a head, a female member having a centrally contracted shank and a finishing top, independent jaws having peripheral reduced portions intermediate their ends to receive said contracted part of the shank so as to be pivotally supported thereby, said jaws being formed at one end to grip the head of the male memher and having their opposite ends inturned, a slidable pin having a tapered part and a head, the inturned jaw ends receiving the pin and its tapered part therebetween, a cap on the pin extending through said top of the female member and having a flanged base interiorly of said member to limit outward movement of the pin, and an open spring having a rim clamped between the shank and top of the female member and having a pair of spaced arms extending into its center and receiving the tapered part of the pin to normally urge the latter outwardly and thereby positively hold the jaws in latching position.
7 thereby, said jaws being formed at one end to grip the head of the male member and having their opposite ends inturned, a slidablepin having a tapered part and a head the inturned jaw ends receiving the tapered part therebetween, a cap on the pin extending through said top of the female member and having a flanged base interiorly of said member to limit outward movement of the pin, and spring means to normally urge the pin outwardly and thereby positively hold the jaws in latching position. 7
3. Ina button, a male member having a head and a female member formed to receive the head therein, means in the female member to latch the head thereto, and combined means to release the latching means and. to effect expulsion of the head from the female member. 1
4. In abutton, a male member having a head, a female member, having an outer head, a pair of independent jaws formed to have their inner ends engage about the head and having operating parts on their outer ends, means to pivotally connect the jaws to the female member at points intermediate the ends of the jaws, an operating member carried by the outer head of the female member and formed to engage with and between the operating parts of the jaws in one position to spread same and thereby positivelyhold the inner ends of each of the jaws engaged with the head of the male member and in a second position to release the jaws from engagement with the head of the male member, and means to jaws having reduced parts between their ends and the female member having parts engaged in the reduced parts of the jaws to provide pivotal mountings for the latter, an operating member carried by the outer head of the female member and formedto engage with and between the inturned ends of the jaws in one position to spread same and thereby positively hold each of same en-. gaged with the head of the male member and in a second position to release the jaws from engagement with the head of the male member, and meansito tension the operating member to normally cause same to hold the jaws in operative position.
6. In a button, a male member having a head, a'female member formed to receive the head, jaws in the female member formedto eugageabout the head in one position thereof, means to pivotally mount the jaws, means extending through the outer end of the female member and engage with and between the jaws to effect spreading movement of the jaws into and out of operative position,
and means to tension the last named means and to normally hold same to positively retain each of the jaws in operative position.
7. In a button, a'male member having a head, a female member formed to receive the head therein, means carried by the female member to latch the head thereto, and means which upon movement thereof releases the latching means and upon continued movement thereof in the same direction engages and effects expulsion of the head from the female member. V
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses. j
