UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER MADDEN, OF MOUNT WASHINGTON, MARYLAND.
PAD.
Application filed May 18,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER MADDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Washington, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the provision of a body protector adapted to be used by those who engage in the playing of games, the character of which demands certain parts of the body to be protected from possible injury, but more particularly designed to protect the arms and shouldersof those who engage in the playing of lacrosse.
The invention contemplates the provision of a protector of the character mentioned, made up of two identically constructed sections designed to cover the arms and shoulders of the user, with means connecting the sections about the neck, the sections being designed to fit closely about the neck to completely cover all parts of the shoulders and portions of the chest.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the fol-- lowing detailed description is read in connec tion with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view showing the manner in which the garment is worn.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view showing the sections of the garment connected. together, with one section in plan.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through the sleeve portion of one section.
Figure 4: is an enlarged framentary view showing the elastic tape connecting the free edges of the sleeve portion.
The protector forming the subject matter of the invention essentially consists of two identically constructed members or sections 10 and 11 respectively. Each section is in the nature of a pad which can be constructed from any suitable material, and also vary in size without departing from the spirit of the invention. Each pad is formed 1923. Serial No. 639,957.
from a single piece of material tapered toward one end as illustrated, so that the material may be folded along its longitudinal center for a portion of its length to provide a split sleeve like portion to protect the arm of the user while the wide unfolded end provides a covering for the shoulder to protect the latter from possible injury. The sections are arranged end to end, the adjacent ends being cut away as at 12 so as as to fit closely about the neck of the user, andthe sections are preferably laced together as at 13 so that they may be adjusted toward and away from each other as the occasion may require, or in other words adjusted to fit snugly about the neck of the user. The adjacent ends of the sleeve like portions of each section are connected together by elastic tapes 15 so that the said. portions are also susceptible of adjustment, and at the same time held snugly on the arm of the user under the tension of the elastic elements.
While it is believed that from the fore going description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire tohave it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown ant described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
A protective garment adapted to be worn by athletes, and comprising two identically constructed sections, each section including a split sleeve like portion adapted to re ceive an arm of the user, elastic tapes connecting the free edges of said sleeve like portion to hold the latter tightly about the arm, a pad connected with each sleeve portion at a point immediately above the el bow, said pad being designed to cover the remaining portion of the arm, shoulder, and a portion of the back and chest, the pads of the respective sections being cutaway at the adjacent ends thereof to unitedly define a neck receiving opening and said pads being laced together at the front and back of the user.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
ELMER MADDEN.
