BRUSH-HOLDER ROCKER RING.

To all whom it may comem:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. Moore, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilkinsburg, in the county of A1- legheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brush-Holder Rocker Rings, of which the following is a specification.
M invention relates to dynamo-electric mac es and it has particular relation to brushholder rocker rings therefor.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a brushholder rocker ring that may be moved angularly with respect to the axis of the machine for the purpose of obtainin access to the respective. brushes mounted thereon and is especially adapted for employment in railway motor construction where accessibility is a vital feature.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described that may be accurately positioned adjacent to the axis of sparkless commutation after havingheen temporarily displaced for the purpose of adjustment or repairs to the brushes.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for securely fastening the rocker ring in interlocking engagement with the frame of the dynamo-electric machine;

Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view, taken on 'line II-II of Fig. 1, illustrating the means for expanding the rocker ring into interlocking engagement with the frame of a dynamo-electric machine.
Referring to the drawings, a dynamoelectric machine is shown as having a frame 1 and a commutator cylinder 2. An annular-channel member 3 is suitably secured to the interior surface of the frame 1 and adjacent to the commutator end of the machine. A rocker ring 4 is mounted within the channel 3 and is provided with a plurality of brushholder arms 5 whlch extend outwardly therefrom and overhang the commutator 2. A plurality of brushholders 6, having brushes 7, are suitably secured to the arms 5 for co-operation with the commutator cylinder 2.
The ring 4 is preferably split, as at 7 the respective ends thereof being beveled, as indicated at 8. A wedge 9 is provided with a bolt 10 whichextends vertically through an aperture 11 in the frame 1 of the machine and is "adapted to draw the wedge member 9 into engagement with the beveled portion 8 of the rocker ring to expand the same within the channel 3 and into frictional engagement with the inner surface thereof.
When it is desired to rotate the ring into a. position where access may be readily had to the brushes, the bolt 10 and the wedge 9 are removed from the machine, permitting the ring 4 to contract suliiciently to allow the same to berotated within the channel 3.
In accordance with my invention, a rocker ring may be moved to a osition where access may be readily ohtamed to the brushholdersand brushes and be returned to a predetermined ositicn with respect to the field without t e necessity of delicate ad- 'ustment. Furthermore, after the ring has een once looked in position, it will be impossible for it to become displaced circumferentially and thereby disturb commutatin conditions.
claim as my invention:
1. In a commutator-type dynamo-electric machine, the combination with the frame thereof, of means for providing, in effect, an annular channel therein, a split brushholder rocking ring rotatably mounted in said channel, and means engageable with said frame only at a predetermined point for coactin with the split ends of said ring and expan ing said ring into interlocking engagement with said channel, whereby the brush-holder ring may be readily moved to a temporary position and restored to normal position without loss of adjustment of the commutating brush axis.
2. A dynamo-electric machine provided with an annular channel disposed adjacent to one end thereof, a brush-holder rocker ring movably mounted in said channel, said ring being rovided with a split portion, a wedge m r adapted to coact with said split meant/e portion to expand said ring into interlocking engagement with said channel, and means associated with said wedge member for predetermini 5 to said channel.
3. A dynamo-electric machine having a brush-holder r0 11g its position with respect cker ring adapted to he moved singularly-with respect to the axis of said machine, and means for locking said ring only in a predetermined position.
