Description

Sept. 23 1924, 1,509,770 L. M. PARKER GAME DEVICE Filed Dec. 24. 1923 Patented Sept. 23, 1924.
UNITED STATES LESLIE MONROE PARKER, OF 'EVANSTON, ILLINOIS.
GAME nnvrcn.
Application filed December 24, 1923. Serial No. 682,388.
1 0 all whom it may so ace m:
Be it known that I, Lnsmn MONROE PARKER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improven'ients in Game Devices, of Wiich the following is a full, concise, and exact description- This invention relates to a device and an apparatus for use in games. It has for one object to provide a device which in one arrangement may be used during the playing of a game to retain the counters or n'ren, or for other purposes, and which in another arrangeme t may be used when the game is notbeing played to store the necessary counters, men and other parts used with the game. Other objects will appear from. time to time throughout the specification and claims. v
My invention is illustrated more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the apparatus open for use in playing;
Figure 72 is a View similar to Figure 1 showing the apparatus closed and ready to be put away:
Figure 3 is a cross section taken on line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure '1' is a View showing the box in which the game and the members shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3 are put away.
Like parts are designated by like characters throughout.
A, A are parts of a folding rack. They are preferably identical in size and shape and, are joined by a hinge A Each of the sections A is provided with one or more trough-like partitions A These troughs are preferably subdivided by means of partitions A As shown only one of such partitions is inserted in each half of the rack but more might be used.
Each half is provided preferably along one side with an open trough or ledge B. Each half of the trough is preferably provided at the end opposite the hinged end with a handle C, and I prefer to add also a hook C pivoted at one handle and adapted to engage the other handle. The hook is shown as engaged in Figure 2 and in one of the drawers in Figure 4:.
When the racks are not in use for playing and when they have been put away with the counters and men in them, they are preferably inserted in a box D. This box may or may not have partitions D dividing it into a series of compartments, and there is preferably added a door D which door may be mounted so as to slide as shown or fastened to the frontof the box in any suitable manner. The handle D is added for convenience in carrying the box.
Although I have shown an operative device, still it will be obvious that many changes in size, shape and arrangement of parts might be made without departing materially from the spirit of my invention; and I wish therefore that my showing be taken as in a sense diagrammatic. In particular many different types of racks might be arranged for hinged movement similar to that shown in the particular embodiment illustrated herewith, and different arrangements of troughs or boxes in the rack might be made. A cover might be provided for each trough, and many other such modifications might be made. It is within the contemplation of my invention that any rack might be made to fold and would thus be usable as a rack and a drawer, and I do not wish to be limited to the specific form of rack or specific form of box or drawer shown herewith.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows:
As shown in Figure 1 the rack is opened for use in playing. In that position the trough-like compartments will be used by the player to retain his counters, chips or other counting means. The open trough may be used by the player to hold the counters or men in his hand. When the game is to be put away, the two sections of the trough are moved together as shown in Figure 2 and preferably fastened together by means of a hook in that position. When thus moved the troughs form a drawer. In the center is a long trough-like section, and in this section preferably the counters or chips are pr The outside trough-like sec tions are then used for storing away the men and the folded drawer is inserted in the box and the parts are thus stored away. By this means I provide a folding rack which in one position may be used as a drawer, and in another position used as a rack.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture a game device, comprising a combined playing and storage receptacle formed of a plurality of members joined together for relative movement, said members adapted when in one relative position to form a rack for use during play, and when in another relative position to formthe storage receptacle adapted to receive the pieces of the game.
2. As a new article of manufacture a game device, comprising a combined playing and storage receptacle formed of a plurality of membersjoined together for relative movement, said members adapted when in. one relative position to form a rack for use during play, and when in another relative position to form the storage receptacle adapted to receive the pieces of the game and adapted to be inserted into a receptacle holding means.
3. As a new article of manufacture a game device, comprising a combined playin and storage receptacle formed or a plura ity of members joined together for rela tive movement, said members adapted when in one relative position to form a rack for use during play and being provided with a plurality of receiving compartments, and when in. another relative position to form a box-like drawer to receive the pieces of the game, said drawer being adapted to be inserted. into a drawer holding means.
4;. As anew article of manufacture a game device comprising a rack formed of two parts associated together for relative movement adapted to be moved with relation to each other, said rack adapted to be openedflto bring the parts end to end and in that position to be used as a piece holder during play, said parts adapted to be moved so as to bring them side to side and in that position to be used as a storage receptacle.
5..As 'a new article of manufacture a game device comprising, a box-like receptacle in. combination with a rack formed of two parts associated. together for relative movement. adapted to be moved with relation to each other, said rack adapted to be opened to bring the parts end to end and in that position to be used as apiece holder during play, said parts adapted to be moved so astobring'them side to side and in, that position to form a drawer.
6. As a new article of manufacture a game device comprising a rack formed of two parts associated together for relative movement and adapted to be moved with relation to each other, each of said parts provided. with a plurality of receiving pockets, one of said pockets being open sided, said raclradapted to be opened to bring the parts end to end and in that position to be used as a piece holder during play, said parts adapted to be moved so as to bring them side to side and in that position to be used as a storage receptacle.
7. As a new article of manufacture a game device comprising a rack formed of two parts associated together for relative movement and adapted to be moved with relation to each other, each of said parts provided with a plurality of receiving pockets, one of said pockets being open sided, said rack adapted to be opened to bring the parts end to end and in that position to be used as a piece holder during play, said parts adapted to be moved so as to bring them side to side and in that position to be used as a storage receptacle, the open-sided pockets of each of said parts adapted to come together in the closed )sition to form an additional closed-sided pocket.
8. As a new article of manufacture a game device comprising a rack formed of two parts associated together for relative movement adapted to be moved with relation to each other, said rack adapted to be opened to bring the parts end to end and in that position to be used as a piece holder during play, said parts adapted to be moved so as to bring them side to side and in that position to be used as a storage receptacle, and means for holding said parts together in the closed position.
9. As a new article of manufacture a game device comprising a box-like receptacle in combination with a rack formed of two parts associated together for relative movement and adapted to be moved with relation to each other. each of said parts provided with a plurality of receiving pockets, one of said pockets being opensided, said rack adapted to be opened to bring the parts end to end andin that position to be used as a piece holder during play, said parts adapted to be moved so as to bring them side to side and in that position to form a drawer, the o )en-sided pockets of each of said parts a aptcd to come together in the closed position to form an additional closed-sided pocket and means for holding said parts together in the closed position, said drawer being adapted to be inserted into the box-like receptacle.
Signed at Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 22nd day of December, 1923.
