HINGE CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed November 22, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Jason l. RUssAKov, a
y citizen of the United States, and a 'esident of Chicago, Cook County, lllinois, have invented ertain new and useful improvements in l-linge Construction, of which the following is a specification.
The present improvements relate to means for securing parts together in hinged relation. The construct-ion is highly advantageous in securing lids to receptacles or to receptacle covers as illustrated, but other applications thereof may be made. lts object is to provide a simple and cheap form of connection, one which is strong and holds the parts securely, and one which may be made and applied according to simple operations. One of its notable advantages is in the provision of a strong and rigid connection without the use of solder or the like. The construction also affords a neat appearance, quite advantageous in various uses of hinge-like connections.
ln the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a fragmentary perspective showing what is known as a receptacle cover adapted to be placed upon an open-topbox or container, enough of the cover device being shown to illustrate the hinge connect-ion of the lid part thereof to a frame member; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective, on an enlarged scale, showing a plate or hase member such as the top part of the frame member shown in Fig. l, and illustrates one of several slotlike openings therein; Fig. 3 is a perspective showing how a formed clip is applied through such an opening as is shown in Fig. 2, together with apparatus adapted to turn the free portions of the clip into the shape shown in Fign 4t; Fig. 4f shows the preferred construction after being formed according to the operations of the plunger of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section which may be considered to be taken on a line at about 5-5 of Fig. l; and Fig. 6 shows a modified form of the connection and a fragment of the bending plunger.
In carrying out the present improvements l first form, according tomechanical prac-- tices well understood, a clip or hinge-pia holder well illustrated in 3. For this purpose I first take a strip of thin sheet metal, such as tin-plate or brass, and form it so as to provide a tubular part l and two-leaf- like parts 11 and 12 extending Serial No. 576,447,
from the tubular part and lying face to face. The free endsof the leaf-like parts are initially turned over slightly at 13y to facilitate the bending or rolling operation, and the clip in the form shown in Fig. 3 is then inserted'through a slot-like opening 14 in some such member as the top part l of the receptacle cover shown in F 1.
A hinge pin 16 may be inserted in the tubular part l() either before or after the clip is inserted through the slot-like opening 14, and before the bending operation is done the tubular part l() with the hinge pin therein is placed in a trough-like support 1.7 (fragmentarily shown), and the leaf-like parts 1l and l2 are then rolled, as one member, until another substantially cylindrical part 20 is formed, with one of the leaf-like parts 1i on the outside and the other l2 thereof on the inside, the rolling pressure being applied until the cylindrical locking member or head 2O tightly contacts the metallic sheet or plate as l5, and thus the clip as a whole is bound tightly upon the plate, with a relatively large headlike part on each side of the plate at the relatively narrow slot-like opening through which both of the leaf-like parts extend. The hinge pin forms a part of the support during the bending or final forming operation, and the effect is to draw the metallic clip firmly into contact with the plate as l5 at the slot therein. rlince both of the platelike extensions are rolled over together, one upon the other, making a double thickness of the metal constituting the head or cylindrical holding member 2O this holding mcmber 20 is very strong, and is able to withstand a greatl deal of force upon the hinge pin. lt is therefore unnecessary further to secure the clip to the base plate or member as 15 by means of solder, and thus an unusually strong connection is made in a very simple and expeditious way.
The plunger or forming die 22 is formed with an inverted trough-like surface adapted to press first upon the upper ends of the leaf- like parts 11 and 12 and then to continue to press upon the outermost one 11 as the rolling over is accomplished on the downward movement of the plunger. A movable plate or guide 23 is positioned along one side of the plunger so as to maintain Ythe rolled-over head in its desired position while being formed. This plate 23 mounted for sliding movement relatively to the plunger 22, and aA spring 24 presses it normally toward the work. Vhen the plate 23 strikes the work, as the part l5, its movement stops, While that of the plunger continues until the forming operation is completed.
According to Fig, 6 the clip may be considered to have vbeen formed initially as shown in Fig. 3, but with the free end edge portions at 13 turned away from each other slightly to facilitate the oppositely-directed rolling. The plunger 25 has two inverted trough-like surfaces and its downward movement rolls the leaf-like parts in opposite directions as illustrated until two tubular locking members 26 and 27 are brought into tight engagement with the base as 2S and the tubular part 29 having the hinge pin 30 is securely held.
This invention is not limited to the exact details of construction illustrated and I contemplate as being included herein such changes, modifications and departures there` from as tall within the scope ol the appended claims.
I claim:
l. In hinge construction, the combination oit a base having a relatively long and narrow slot-like opening therethrough, a hingepin-holder of sheet metal formed with a substantially7 tubular part wider than said slot-like opening and with two integral leatlike parts extending from the tubular part,
and being positioned in said opening and being face to face thereat, said tubular part being tightly against one side ol the base, each of said leaf-like pai-ts being turned into a substantially tubular part to constitute locking means tightly positioned on the sidfof the base opposite to that on which is positioned the inst-mentioned tubular part. and a hinge pin in one of said tubular parts.
2. In hinge construction, the combination of a. base having a relatively long and narrow slot-like opening therethrough, a hingepin-holder of sheet metal termed with a substantially tubular part wider than said Slot-like opening and with two integral leatlike parts face to tace extending from th-;` tubular part and being positioned in said opening, said tubular part being tightly against one side ot the base nleinlwr. said leaf-like parts being turned intosnbstantially a tubular part wider than said openingl and being positioned on the side ot the base opposite to that on which is positioned the first-mentioned tubular part'. and a hinge pin in one ot said tubular parts.
