Description
P. BIEGHETTI Sept. 23 1924.
STENCIL Filed D60. 27, 1922 IN V EN TOR. PE'TF/i 556/7577? ATTORNEYS.
Patented Sept. 23, 1924.
PETER BEGHETTI, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
STENCIL.
Application filed December 2 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER BEGHETTI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented newand useful Improvements in Stencils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stencils of the changeable letter type, and has for its: object to simplify and improve the construction and operation of such a stencil and provide a device in which the letters can be quickly and easily interchanged or replaced.
In carrying out this object I employ a stencil frame adapted to support a plurality of individual stencil plates in various arrangements and combinations. The frame is fitted with a hinged clamping member which may be easily manipulated to clamp the stencil plates in position. The individual plates are so constructed as to permit of easy manipulation.
One form which my invention may assome is exemplified in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 shows a plan View of a stencil em;- bodying my invention.
Fig. 2 shows a cross section of the same.
Fig. 3 shows a longitudinal, sectional view thereof.
Referring in detail to the accompanying drawing, 1 show a stencil frame 10 adapted to serve as a holder for individual plates. This frame is preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal curled at its edges 11 to afford increased strength and rigidity and bent to form parallel guide members 12 on one of its faces. These guide members assist in positioning, the stencil plates and also increase the strength and rigidity of the frame.
Formed in the frame between the guide members 12 are a plurality of rows of rectangular apertures 13, the apertures in each row being separated by cross webs 141. The cross webs in each row are aligned with relation to those of the adjacent row.
For use with each frame I provide a set of individual stencil p ates 15, each cut out 7, 1922. Serial No. 609,190.
to form a letter, numeral or other sign character. These stencil plates are formed with an offset face 16 adapted to seat in the apertures 13 in the frame, the plates being of a size and shape to cover one of the spaces or apertures 13. Each plate has an upstanding flange 17 formed at one of its ends, said flange being adapted to be engaged by the thumb and finger of the operator for convenience in positioning the plates in place. The side edges of the plates are formed with projections 18, which abut when the plates are assembled in rows to prevent overlapping of the plates.
To maintain the plates in position on the frame I provide a clamping member 19 for each row, said clamping member being formed with a rod bent into shape and hinged at one end of the frame, as shown at 20. The opposite end of the clamping member co-operates with a pivoted latch 21, which serves to retain it in position overlying the stencil plates. The clamping member is of such width that one of its sides lies against the inside face of the upstanding flange on the stencil plates, thus securely locking the plates against sidewise movement. The offset face on the plates, being seated within the open space in the frame, will also assist in preventing displacement of the stencil plates.
Various changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts herein shown and described may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention as disclosed in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A stencil comprising a frame formed with a plurality of rows of apertures, a plurality of individual stencil plates adapted to register with said apertures, each plate having an upstanding flange at its end and a U-shaped member pivoted at one end to the frame in line with each row of apertures and adapted to fit within the upstanding flange of the said stencil plates and means for latching the said U-shaped member in position on the frame.
2. A stencil comprising a frame formed be arranged in registry with the apertures of a single sheet of metal, said frame being and having offset faces toseat Within the provided with a plurality of spaced apersaid apertures and a clamping member 0 tures arranged in parallel rows, said frame hinged at one end of the frame and arranged 5 being bent to form a plurality of guide above each row of apertures for retaining members between the rows, of apertures, a the stencil plates in position on the frame. set of individual stencil plates adapted to PETER BEGHETTI.
