To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND L. CRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Valve Remover, of which the, following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a tool for the easy and quick removal of the valves from the cylinder of internal combustion engines, and more especially to the class of engines that are used for automobiles, by providing means, whereby the valve springs are sufficiently compressed to allow the retaining key or retaining device to be removed and then to release the compressed spring, so that the valve mechanism may be taken apart and later put together again.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of these specifications, in which- Fig. 1 is a view of a portion of an engine cylinder, showing its valve and valve chamber, with the valve remover about to be placed in the valve chamber.
Fig. 2 is a view of a portion of an engine cylinder, showing its valve and valve chamber, with the valve remover placed upon the valve, and the valve spring compressed to the point that will allow the withdrawal of the retaining key or retaining device.
Fig. 3 is a top view of the end of the bent arm, showing it placed around the valve stem.

In which, 1 is an engine cylinder, 2 the valve-chamber, 3 the valve, 4: the valve-stem, 5 the valve-spring, 6 the valvefspring washer, 7 the retaining-key, 8 an elongated slot in the valve-stem 4 for holding the retaining-key 7, 9 is a bent arm, having its lower end constructed in aspanner like shape partly encircling the valve-stem 4 and bearing against the valve-spring washer 6; 10 is a series of notches, 11 is a slidable arm having a compression-screw 13 at its outer end and carrying a spring-catch 12.
The action of my device is as follows The valve 3 having been exposed as is common practice, and not necessary to describe, the lower end of the bent arm 9, is placed around the lower end of the valvestem 4, and against the valve-spring washer 6: the slidable arm 11 is placed upon the upper end of the bent arm 9 and moved downward until the end of the compression-screw 13 comes in contact with the valve 3, the compression-screw 13 is now screwed downward, whereupon the spring-catch 12, that has'passed over the series of notches 10 as the arm 11 descended, locks itself into one of the notches and resists the tendency of the compression-screw 13 to push the arm 11 upward and holds the arm rigidly. The compression-screw 13 is now screwed downward, until the valve spring 5 has been compressed enough to allow the withdrawal of the retaining-key 7, from its slot 8. After the retaining-key 7 is removed, the compressionscrew 13 is screwed upward, until all compression is removed from the valve-spring 5, whereupon the spring-catch 12 is released from its engagement with the bent arm 9, by pressure at its outer end, thus allowing the arm 11 to be quickly withdrawn from the upper end of the bent arm 9, and then the bent arm 9 is removed from the lower end of the valve-stem 4 and the valve and its mechanism, is free to be removed from the engine.
In replacing a valve, the various parts are placed in their proper positions, then the lower end of the bent arm 9, is placed around the lower end of the valve-stem 4, bearing against the valve-spring washer 6: the slidable arm 11 is now moved downward upon the upper end of the bent arm 9, until the compression-screw 13 bears upon the valve 3 The arm 11 is now held in this position and pressure is brought to bear upon the lower end of bent arm 9, until the valve spring 5 and valve-spring washer 6, have been moved upward enough to allow the in sertion of the retaining-key 7 into the slot 8. As pressure is applied to the lower end of the bent arm 9, it passes upward through the arm 11 and the spring-catch 12, automatically secures the arm 11 to the bent arm 9.
