yWhen it is desired to lower the dipper from its unloading position, shown by dotted lines in Figure 1 and full lines in NFigure 4, into the ditchorV trenchv for loading, the lifting and unloading drumk 14 is released or reversed thereby unwinding the cable 54 until the dipper engages the bottom of the ditch as shown by full lines in Figure 1. The loading drum 13 is then started and as the cable 73 is wound about the drum the-dipper commences to move forwardly and upwardly asshown in Figure 2. When the dipper isin the above position thedogs 63 are in engagement with thev transverse bar 62 and as the loaded dipper is elevated out of the ditch'by means of the cable 54 for depositing the excavated material on-'either side of the trench, the forward end of the dipper is suspended on the dogs 63 and the rear end on the arms 48, as shown in, Figure 3. Also as the loaded dipper is raised the rear end of same is lowered to the position shown in the above figure, the vguides 51 sliding downwardly on Ithe arms 48 until they engage stops provided on the arms. l prefer to use the bearings 53 0n the arms 48 k.as stops to arrest further downward movesupporting the dipper when loaded, I reduce to a minimum the possibilit-y `of the excavated material dropping out of the forward Aend of the dipper while it is being elevated for unloading. To elevate the boom and dipper out of the ditch the lifting drum 14 is started and as the loading drum 13 is prevented from rotating by a brake or other suitable means, not here shown, the boom is elevated to the position shown by dotted lines in Figure 1. The loading drum 13 is then released and as the lifting drum"continues to revolve the carriage carrying the dipper moves rearwardly upon the tracks 35 until the upwardly` extending ends 65 of the dogs 63 engagethe stops 66. The cross bar 62 is then released from the dogs Land the dipper drops to the'position lshown yrear end of the dipper on said'arms when in the position shown in the above -figure and also whilel being loaded as vshown in Figure 2.

I claim as my invention: y
l. The ycombination with a frame,fof a mast pivbted thereon for vertical oscillation and adjustment,a boom p-ivoted onsaid mast and. having a trackthereon, a carriage 'mounted toslideonsaid track, a dipperhav` ingfone end 'pivotally',snspended fromthe carriage and its opposite end having a link connection to a swinging bar separably attached to the carriage, cables connected with said clipper for moving i-t back and forth on said boom, means for locking said dipper to prevent premature tilting thereof, and means for tripping said locking means to release said clipper at a predetermined point in its movement on said boom.
2. A combination of a frame, of a mast pivoted thereon, and having means for vertical adjustment, a boom pivotally connected at one end With said mast, and having a track on its under side extending longitudinally thereof, a carriage mounted to move v back and forth on said track, a dipper pivfl (l otally supported in said carriage, a swinging bar suspended from the carriage and having one end provided With a link connection to the front of the dipper, means mounted in said carriage and engaging said dipper for locking it in its loaded position,
' mea-ns connected with said dipper for moving it back and forth on said boom, and a trip device for releasing said dipper at a predetermined point in such movement.
The combination with a frame, of a mast mounted at an incline therein, a boom pivoted on said mast near one end thereof, a carriage mounted to slide longitudinally on said boom, roller bearings connected to the carriage and bearing against theunderside of the boom to support the boom in the operation of filling the dipper, a dpper hav-y ing a pivotal connection at one end with said carriage, a latch mounted on said carriage for locking said clipper in its loaded position, cables connected with said carriage and dipper for moving them back and forth on said boom, and a trip device for said latch.

The combination With a boom, having a track thereon, and a carriage comprising side bars having anti-friction bearings on said boom, arms pivotally connected to said bars near one end thereof, a clipper' having pivotal connections with the other ends of said arms, arms pivotally connected with said carriage at one end, and having slidable connections with the other end of said dipper, a cable connected with said last named arms for oscillating them on their pivots, and a cable connected With the opposite end of said clipper` for moving it and said carriage longitudinally on said boom.

6. The combination with a boom, having a track thereon, of a carriage composed rof a pair of side bars arranged in parallel relation, and having bearings ony said track for movement thereon, a pair of arms pivotally connected with one endof said bars,

Thecombination With a boom, having a track thereon, of a carriage composed of a pair of side bars arranged in parallel relation, and having bearings on said track for movement thereon, a pair of arms pivotally connected With one end of said bars, a dipper having a pivotal link connection with the opposite ends of said arms, a second pair of arms connected with said carriage, and vmounted to slide iny guides on said dipper, cables connected with said second pair of arms and with theopposite end of said dipper, a latch device for normally locking said ,first pair of arms, and said clipper in parallel relation substantially with said carriage and said boom, and means for tripping said latch device at a predetermined point on said boom.
8. The combination with a frame, of a mast pivoted at one end on said frame, and adapted to overhang a ditch or trench, means for raising and lowering said mast,
a boom pivoted at one kend near the pivoted end of said mast, a carriage mounted to slide onthe underside of said boom, an excavating dipper supported byl said carriage and having means for locking it in its loaded positionadjacent saidboom, cables connected with theopposite ends of said dipper for moving it back andforth on said boom for loading and unloading, and stops adjustably mounted yon said boom in the path of said latch device for tripping it and releasing said dipper at a predetermined point in its movement.
9. The combination with a boom, having a. track-thereon, ofra carriage mounted to slide on said track, a pair of arms pivoted on said carriage near one end thereof, a dipper having a pivotal Vconnection with said arms, a rod mounted in said carriage, a second pair of arms mounted on said rod and latch device mounted in said carriage for depending therefrom, guides mounted on normally locking said dpper in its raised one end of said dipper in which Said Second loaded position, and means or'trpping said l0 pair of arms are Slidahle, a cable connected latch device to release said dipper.
