Be it known that we, HERBERT S. JANDUs and WVAYNE E. DUNSTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clamps for Multiple-Bar Bumpers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This inventionrelates to bumpers of the parallel multiple-bar construction, comprising at least a pair of front or impact bars and at least a single rear bar. It is the general object of the invention to provide for bumpers of this type a new and efficient center clamp for holding the central portions of the three bars in eflicient assembled relation; also to. provide a clamp for this purpose which is extremely simple of construction and economical of production. We

The bumper shown herein is of the type described and claimed in hIcGregor Patent No. 1,372,154, issued March 22, 1921, and comprises, in addition to the rear bar 3, a pair of front or impact bars 4 connected at their ends to the ends of the bar 3 by means of bolts 5 extending through aligned eyes on the ends of said bars, the eyes 3 on the ends of the rear bar parts of the center Describing the various parts by reference On the front or being positioned between the eyes at the corresponding ends of the bars f. The central portion 3 of the bar 3 is projected toward the'central portions of the bars 4 but, in the form of ourinvention shown in Figs. 1-4:, inclusive, is not projected a suflicient distance to bring it within the vertical plane of the barst, this arrangement being due to the construction and arrangen'ieirt of the clamp, which will now be described.
The central clamp comprises .a plurality of identical clips, preferably made of stampings, and each being approximately C- shaped in section, one of saidclips being showirln perspective in Fig. 5. Each clip comprises a vertical ;web 6, upper and lower bodies or flanges 6 and 6, each having at its edge a flange 6 substantially parallel with the web 6, the'flanges 6 being presented towards each other.
The flanges 6 are provided each with a central perforation 6 for the reception of the center clamping bolt 7, and the flanges 6" are spaced from such perforations a sufficlent distance to receive, withir andbetween themselves and the bolt 7, the upper and lower edges of the bumper bars with which they respectively cooperate. I In the construction shown in Figs. 1-4, inclusive, the centralclamping clip or member is turned 180 with respect to the upper and lower clamping clips or members, thereby to engage t1 e central portion 3 of the rear bar and to hold the same against the rear face of the'bolt 7.
.In assembling the clamping device, each member thereof will be applied to its respective bar, the members are then slid into line at the central portions oftheir re-' spective bars and the stud bolt inserted into the alignedopenings thereof. -When the nuts 8 on therstud bolts are set up, the clamping members will springsufiiciently to insure secure engagement ofthe clamping members and the flanges thereof with the edge portions of their respective bars.
In Fig. 6, there is shown a modification wherein the central portion 3 of the rear bar isdeflected into the vertical plane of the central portions of the-front bars. WVith this arrangement, all of the clamping members are zpplied to the plates with their flanges prsented forwardly or in the same direction, the central clamping member being turned 180 with respect to the central clamping member shown in the preceding views,
The clamp shown and extremely .simple\of construction and economical of production, but is particularly well adapted for all incidents of use and is capable of retaining the central portions of the bars'in proper relation to eachother and comprising upper and lower C-shaped members applied to the central portions of the first two" bars, respectively, and an intermediate C-shaped member applied tothe portion of the rear or auxiliary. bar, said members having aligned apertures therethrough, and means extending through said apertures and connecting said members together.

The combination, with a bumper comprising a pair of vertically spaced front or impact bars and an intermediate rear o'r auxiliary bar having its central portion projected'toward the central portions of the first two bars, of a clamping device for the central portions of said bars, said device comprising upper, lower, and intermediate members each having an upper and a lower body and a flange projecting from each such body, the flanges of each member being presented toward each other, 'and' securing means extending through the upper and lower bodies of said members.
3. The combination, with a bumper comprising a pair of vertically spaced front or impact bars and an intermediate rear or auxiliary bar having its centralportion projected toward the central portions of the first two bars, of a clamping device for the central portions of said bars, said device comprising upper, lower and intermediate clamping members each having upper and lower bodies having apertures therethrough and each having a flange projecting from each such body, the flanges of each member being presented toward each other and spaced from the apertures in such bodies, a
bolt extending through said apertures, and means on said bolt for clamping said members together in contact with the edges of the bars which cooperate therewith.

The combination, with a bumper oomprising a pair of vertically spaced front or impact bars and an intermediate rear' or auxiliary bar having its central portion projected toward the central portions of the first two bars, of a clamping device for the member being presented toward each other and being spaced from the apertures in such faces at distances corresponding to the thickness of their respective cooperating plates, the said clamping members being capable of yielding under endwise pressure, a bolt extending through the apertures in said members, and a nut on said bolt for app-lying endwise pressure to the said mem bers.
5. The combination, with a bumpercomprising a'pair of "ertically spaced front or impact bars and an intermediate rear or auxiliary bar having its central portion projected toward the central portions of, the first two bars, of a clamping device for the central portions-of said bars said device comprising a plurality of yieldable substantially C-shaped clamping members having vertically aligned apertures therethrough and means extending through said apertures for-securing said members together. k
6. A clamp-ing dew'ce for multiple-bar bumpers said device comprising a plurality of clamping members each having an intermediateweb, apertured flanges projecting from said web, and a flange projecting from each of the first mentioned flanges and toward each other.
7. A clamp for multiple-bar bumpers comprising a plurality of substantially shaped clamping members having vertically aligned apertures therethrough, and means extending, through said apertures for securing said members together in clamping engagement with their respective bump- .er bars.
