' Be itknown that I, ARTHUR C. HOPKINS, a citizen ofthe United States, residin at Niles, in the county of Berrien and tate of Michigan, have invented a' new' and useful Improvement in Pumps, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to pumps and the.

The crankhaft, as illustrated, has four cranks which are set 90 apart.- Each crank 'has a connectingrod 18 connectedthereto at its upper end and the lower end of the connecting rod beingv hingedly mounted on in 19 which is carried b a piston 20 w 'ch is '-slldably .mounte in the cylinder 21. It will thus be seen that with the plug valve 39l set, as shown in- Figures 1 and 3, the liquid forced out through the discharge line 29 -will pass through the passageA 37 into the pipe 40. From the `p1pe40 the .liquid vis returned, still under pressure,
through the pipe 41 and is forced up throu'ghvthe passage 39 and opening 42 into the upper portion of the pumpy which is prefera ly ept nearly full of oi re 1, it willl be 'tuid through the pipe 40 and 41, the plug n throughv the opening 42 into the upper porv tion of the pump.
Under some circumstances, it is necessary shall vary with a given crank-shaftspeed, and for this purpose, I have provided a series of openings 43, 44, 45 and 46, arranged .that the rate of discharge from the pump one above the other in the sideof the cyl.-

In the position shown in Figures 1 and 2, these lateral openings are closed by the plate -47 which is adjustably held upon its llU seat bymeans of screws 450. plate is provided, hovvever, With sets of variable openings l, 52, 53 and 54 which correspond in height 'With theopenings 43, 44, 45 and 46. The plate 47 may be moved to the left from the position shown in .Figure ly by means of the rod 55 which is attached `thereto. As the plate is moved to the left the upper openings 54 communicate with the upper holes 46. VVith' the plate in this position and the crank-shaft in operation, the vacuum of the cylinder 21 will be broken as soon' as the'piston 20 uncovers the upper hole 46 and the liquid Will then be drawn i through this hole and the opening 54 into the cylinder 2l. As the piston descends, the
`liquid will be forced back throughthis hole into the sump 22 until the piston passes the hole 46. With this hole closedby the piston the pressure generatedV inthe cylinder 2l Will force the liquid out into the discharge line 29, as beforafor the rest of the stroke.
`By moving the plate 47 still farther to the lett, the holes 45, 44 and 43 are successively uncovered, therebyl decreasing the amount of liquid forced into the discharge line on each downward stroke of the piston.
`Without departing from the spirit and scope or the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in vievv or the prior art.,
